Anyway, I've been playing survival by myself and I've been having trouble, I haven't found anything worthwhile mining except for coal and iron ore... any tips? And I'd like to venture further away from my hut but I'm deathly afraid I'll get lost.

Best to start in caves. You can develop a system with torches to make sure you don't get lost in the dark and bad caves.

I have no idea where one would be, my spawn is at a semi-coastal area with lots of trees. After I get enough supplies from my dig I'll pack it all up and move.

Mountains are your best bet. You can find holes once you start getting to the hilly sections.
