A good start for Peugeot and Gronholm

Marcus Gronholm showed everyone his intentions for the 2004 World Rally Championship when he finished first in the first timed stage of the Monte Carlo Rally, almost 10 seconds ahead of his nearest opponent.

The Finn is driving the new Peugeot 307 WRC and so far the results look promising since Marcus was almost half a second faster per kilometre than anyone else. "I like the car but the stage was very difficult," admitted the former World Champion, who mastered the damp and slightly snowy road conditions.

The battle behind the Peugeot driver is fierce. Markko Martin is second at the wheel of his Focus WRC, followed by Sebastien Loeb (Citroën Xsara WRC), Francois Duval (Ford Focus WRC) and reigning World Champion Petter Solberg (Subaru Impreza WRC), who lost some time after making a contact and stalling his car. The Norwegian was able to continue, even if he had some problems re- starting his Impreza.

One of the most impressive result of the stage belongs to Roman Kresta, who finished in sixth place in this stage. The young Czech is driving a Hyundai Accent WRC for the first time in a rally but managed a very competitive time despite the fact that he doesn't know the car very well. We could also mention that the Accent WRC was never as competitive as the leading WRC cars, adding more credit to Kresta's performance.

Carlos Sainz takes seventh place at the wheel of his Xsara WRC, just in front of Gigi Galli (Mitsubishi Lancer WRC), Freddy Loix (Peugeot 307 WRC) and Nicolas Vouilloz (Peugeot 206 WRC).

Freddy Loix (Peugeot 307 WRC) rounds up the top 10 while Gilles Panizzi is only eleventh for his first stage result behind the wheel of the new Mitsubishi Lancer WRC.

SS4: Loeb puts his hat in the ring

Sebastien Loeb got in on the act to become the third driver in the first three stages to top the timesheets on the 2004 Monte Carlo Rally.

The Citroen ace was 1.8s quicker than his team-mate Carlos Sainz, with the rest out of the picture here on the re-run of the icy 20.18km Piegut-Urtis stage.

Loeb's time pulled him up to second place overall at the expense of Ford's Markko Martin, but Marcus Gronholm in the impressive new Peugeot 307 WRC retains the overall lead, 8.2s ahead of Loeb. This comes despite the Finn being stuck in third gear for the last 3kms of the stage. Marcus was trying so hard to keep his momentum up, particularly in second-gear corners, that he broke the windscreen of the 307 in his efforts.

Martin and fellow Focus pilot Francois Duval were fourth and fifth best here, 10.7s and 12.8s slower than Loeb respectively.

"Our tyre choice was perfect for both stages but conditions are still difficult," said Martin. "There was quite a lot of hard, packed ice in both stages but with temperatures rising it is melting in some places and turning to slush. Stage four was also quite snowy. The first stage of the group went well but I was a little slow on the second. I'm not sure why. Maybe the driver was good in the first but not so good in the second."

Petter Solberg set the sixth best time here, 15.1s off the pace for Subaru, ahead of Peugeot's Freddy Loix.

Hyundai privateer Roman Kresta, Peugeot privateer Nicolas Vouilloz and Subaru's Mikko Hirvonen completed the top 10.

Mitsubishi chases handling glitch

It's been an up and-down first morning for the comeback Mitsubishi squad, returning to the World Rally Championship trail after a year's sabbatical.

Young Italian Gigi Galli set a brilliant fourth best stage time on SS3, but otherwise he and, in particular, Gilles Panizzi have struggled with the new Lancer WRC04.

Team manager Derek Dauncey explained the trouble: "It's a small handling problem, which isn't giving the drivers much confidence. That's difficult when they are going from ice to tarmac and back all the time."

At the service halt after SS4, big changes were made to the cars, including a steering rack swap to try to give the drivers a bit more feeling.

Still at this stage, the team is not disheartened and is concentrating on its main aim, which Dauncey says is to: "gather as much data as possible from both cars."

After SS4 the cars are lying in eighth (Galli) and 14th (Panizzi) places overall.

Leob had a great drive. When they showed in car of him his car handling was so far beyond all the other drivers it was amazing. Amazing drive, and this coming from a Subaru fan....
