More Grip=Better Drifting? According to R&T

While doing absolutly nothing in my office aid class, I decided to break out my latest Road and Track issue and start reading the article on drifting. You can read it online here:
http://www.roadandtrack.com/tests/comparison/sultans_of_slide
However, what got my attention was the side article on the Yokohama AD08 tires they used for the cars. In it Rhys Millen states "Contrary to popular belief, for drifting you need tires that provides more grip." I just started blankly. What?
He continues saying "The more grip you have, the more predictable a car reacts when you take it past its limits."
What do you think about this? I'm turning on GT5P right now to test this on the Eiger.

Very true. This is a big big big reason why the scoring system is so flawed in GT5P. GT5P gives more points on a crappy tire where as any pro drifter will be on some solid rubber.

I've always drifted on N3/N3. Not quite a pro level tire like an S1/S1 setup, but enough grip to make it worth wild.

It is true, you still have to control your car when it's sideways. If you don't have grip chances are you will wind up facing the wrong direction.

Yep, just finished testing everywhere, (even on GT PSP in lunch lol).
Used the same type model M3 that won the R&T test and it drifts amazingly well with an R3/R2 or R3/R3 setup. Only problem with it is the car needs to have a good amount of high-end torque to get the wheels spinning with that much grip, but after that, it's near perfect.

You've gone to far the other way then if you're on R tyres, which are essentially more like slicks. I would say, on GT5P Pro physics, S tyres are around the right mark as they give you enough grip to still get forward drive and plenty of it, whilst giving you enough slip to make early entries and still be able to spin up the tyres without the need for a tonne of power.

definitely true, all the pro difters are using soft/grippy compound like the falken Azenis, Advan Neova, Bridgestone potenza etc. But they are also higher powered cars with proper suspension set-ups. More grip means faster speeds and like they said predictable control! I wish i could get a tire sponsor, i'm afraid to drift on my falken azenis rt-615 they are great, but soft would go through them quickly and at $114.00 each i don't have the deep pockets to afford it. :indiff:
