that was intentionally built that way by BMW, so that other drivers could read "turbo" in their mirrors (and be advised to give way).

the turbo 2002 caused a similar outrage in germany when it first appeared like the lotus carlton did about 20 years later in britain. there was even a debate in parliament about it, after which BMW decided to remove the text on the splitter for image reasons. a lot of 2002 turbo owners put it on again by themselves though.
