I couldn't put my finger on one particular race and say it was my single most satisfying victory ever, but I did have one today that was pretty good. For a while now I've known the quickest way to get serious money (and not just the two hundred thousand you get from the Costa di Amalfi races) is to win the Boxer Spirit trophy to get the RUF CTR "Yellow Bird" and then use that to take on Schwarzwald Liga B for the 1992 AMG Mercedes touring car, which in turn you race in the Deutche Tourenwagen Marsters for the CLK Touring Car. All up, you'll next about a million credits for half an hour's work.
Anyway, today I was in the first phase of my little plan, taking an Impreza out for the Boxer Spirit race at Hong Kong. While I do like the circuit - I think I'm one of the few who do - I'm not a fan of this particular race as it's caused me some trouble in the past, and I rather stupidly forgot to auto-save after clearing the races at Deep Forest and Infineon. I hadn't thought much of it at the time, but unfortunately the race was stacked with RUFs out the front and the race value was something like 147 points when it had bene considerably less in previous ones (I had taken a few parts out beforehand ... one of the few things I dislike about the game is that you have no idea of the A-spec value before you're committed to the race). P5 made a mess of the first corner and I out-dragged him down to the second and had a brave look down the inside of P4. Unfortunately, P5 had drawn alongside me - I've swtiched to the rooftop view for a little more spacial awareness, but I lose the rear-view mirror - and I got squeezed between car and wall.
When I got to the first sector, I found myself down about nine and a half seconds on the lead RUF, who promptly streaked away into the distance. I very nearly gave up there and then - call me a sore loser if you will, but I likes my 100% win ratio - but I decided to carry on anyway because the first Friday practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix was about to begin and regardless of whether I gave up or carried on, this would be my last race.
Somehow, I won. I retook P5 in the left-hander just after the second hairpin, and netted P4 under the hotel. P3 was another Impreza and it took me a half a lap to reel him in, all the while steadily wearing down the leader's time. But by the end of the second lap, he was still seven seconds adrift and I had plateaued, only being able to take out two or three hundredths of a second each sector. I have no idea how I reeled a bigger and faster car in in just two laps of a tight street circuit, but I suspect it had something to do with my balls-to-the-wall approach to the circuit, especially down in the corner where I got squeezed on the first lap; I can take it a gear higher than the game recommends and considerably faster because I take a different racing line where I lift off for a moment, swing the front in early and get back on the power before I'm even in the same time zone as the apex.
