Biiiggg shunt for Alonso today. Looks very scary at full speed.

FYI he climbed out under his own steam and is completely fine.

You can clearly see in Gutierrez's onboard that he turned slightly left just before impact....tsk tsk tsk. I hope the powers that be have a long look at this one. Unless he can convince the Stuart's that he "lost sight of Alonso" and that he didn't know Alonos switched sides, that was pretty amateur.

They've already determined it a racing incident. Gutierrez was perfectly entitled to move to the left of the track, that was his one move. Alonso just didn't expect that sudden deceleration which came because the car was harvesting.

Well there was no shortage of camera angles for that one... Whoever this "Fetela" fellow (or racing team) is, he sure got knocked for a loop by that bump. Just goes to show you why no jump landing is safe, even when you actually have a safe landing.

Not sure who's luckiest to be alive here, the driver or the corner workers and spectators.

Given that the last roll dropped the car into the pedestrian tunnel that has a solid metal rail running down the middle of it, I'd say the driver and anyone in the underpass.

That certainly fits the "WTF" part of the title.

What exactly happened anyway? It seems like the brakes failed but that seems like an aweful long way to go just on momentum.

Sounds to me that was some sort of engine failure alongside brake failure; the engine just seems to cut out entirely as the Corvette (?) brakes for the Safety Clip (it's the name of that corner, apparently). And since there is a straight just before the Safety Clip, it is possible to be going at speeds high enough to carry enough momentum to follow the path the driver took.

But make no mistake about it, that's one hell of a roundabout path just to get back on track. It's a good thing that crash through the gates didn't kill the car outright...

I'd like to see the on board from the blue car....

He obviously had a brake failure of some sort but I can't tell whether he purposely threw it into a spin and roll rather than having a head on crash or tried driving down that dirt road before seeing it went nowhere.
