These may be grainy and a bit fuzzy, but these are the first photos of what is likely Ford’s Mustang Concept.

Photographed on a secluded beach in California by a hiker crossing its path, we apparently caught the Mustang while it was involved in its own “official” photo shoot.

While a disposable camera doesn’t do the future pony-car justice, it does reveal many important styling cues. Retro styling is once again hip and the 1960s are back again, although this time the Mustang is sharing a platform with a Jaguar (S-Type) and Lincoln (LS).

We’re expecting the new Mustang to be offered with a variety of engine choices, including a 215-hp 3.0-liter V-6, and a modified 4.6-liter V-8 with 280-hp. The Cobra version will likely be fitted with a 400-plus horsepower V-8.

We’ll see the concept debut at the NAIAS in January, but the all-new (production) Mustang will wait until its 40th anniversary in 2004 to make its official debut.

Pictures on site....

At first glance I thought: A4!

At second glance I thought: Eeww...

No, I really don't like it.

I have to concur: It's hideous. A cross between a Lincoln (front end), a Viper (side panels), and a Thunderbird (rear). Those taillights are just stupid. It looks like a toy. The thing's massively slab-sided (more so than the 745i), and has barely any window area. A 400HP V8 will melt that rear valence around the exhaust. It's so ill-proportioned, I may skip lunch....

Well i like the :bmw: 745i but ain't so keen on that mustang at the moment though in the flesh I'd probably say different....

I guess they thought they had to do it after doing a concept GT40?

I first saw it in my PH newsletter and noticed the Viper element also. The rear lights are not too hot either; hopefully it will be scrapped.

Yuk. It's ugly. The new GT40 looks quite good, but that's horrible. It looks like a brick with wheels.

I remember hearing how Ford wanted to re-create the Mustang, using as many elements from the original Mustang (well, 1968 or so) as they could. This falls way short of the mark; there are too many pieces lifted from the 1989 convertible model. IMO, borrowing heavily from the GT500 Eleanor would be perfect.

(http://www.nzmustang.com/NewMustangs/2003shelbyeleanor.htm for the rest)

- Start with the current -- but stiffened, of course -- Mustang frame.
- Add Volvo S60-series suspension.
- Drop in '03 SVT Cobra's engine and 6-speed transmission.
- Shorten the rear overhang by 4-8 inches.
- Simplify the front valence somewhat, getting rid of the two lower foglights.
- Make the hood scoop shallower, and make it face forward.
- Rake the windscreen back a little more, reducing the height of the above-door profile.
- Steal the taillights from the original '64 Mustang.
- Move the exhaust from side to rear -- dual-twin pipes.
- Interior should be like the '02 Mustang Bullitt concept (not the production version).

Anything less would be...well, it would be that monstrosity prototype they just put out.

The fall of the muscle car? I admit that the concept Mustang is ugly and hopefully they will change that before it comes out but the 400+ horsepower V-8 doesn't sound like a fall to me.
What does :honda: have that comes close?

I am not a big Ford fan. Mostly due to their lack of performance of their older muscle cars but if I was to choose one it would be the newer Mustangs.(2002,2003).

I would certianly take almost any Ford over any Honda.

Egads! It's yet another automotive love-child: the Mustang had a one-nighter with the Focus! It's incestuous this time....

Way too chubby for a Mustang. It may be the odd angle they chose for the drawing, but it's hokey at best. Still better than the concept posted earlier.

What you saw there (the red car) is not a concept car, do you think, a concept car being test muled some where? I don't think so, what I see there is the pre-production version car, not a concept car, there is no way that Ford will change the design. It will prove too costly, and Ford (already losing some money) have other things to think about besides the Mustang (Ford 500 sedan, F-series Super Duty pickup, Ranger pickup, Freestyle SUV, F-150 pickup, the next Windstar, and the GT [Formally known as the GT40]).

Ford is lagging behind the competion, and thats why they suck.

Ford has been lagging behind the competition since about 1990. Last year they lost 4.5 billion dollars. They took on too much (Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Mazda) and they almost sunk because of it. Ford has been cutting costs like nobodies business and the guys in charge are going to do whatever they can to keep their fat checks rolling in. So if it means that building the next-gen Mustang in Mexico for $4 less per hour theyd probably do it. If it meant putting in burlap potato sacks for seat material theyd probably do it. Since everyone now knows about Fords follies, and it is getting harder and harder to find a "Ford Guy"; I dont see why things will ever miraculously change for Ford. And if that turns out to be true, expect to see plexiglass windshields in all Fords by the end of the decade!

Most "Ford-Guys" are mostly cowboys living at mid-western states like Utah, Colorado, etc. including Texas.

I wish Ford will be bankrupt at 2008.

Maybe. Damn shame. Muscle cars have a character, a connection to families in North America that imports have not acheived. Imports time may come but it is the muscle car that has the soul and style.

The Blues Brothers would never make their daily driver a Civic, or so I assume they haven't and won't.

Muscle cars do have character. Irreplaceable character. But Ford is doing muscle cars a major disservice by keeping the Mustang in the form that it is in. GM is doing quite well with the Corvette, and while the styling leaves much to be desired, the Camara/Trans Am was good, too. Now if we can only get Dodge to do another Charger....

Just because the Civic hasn't been popularized when the Blues Brothers are around. In fact the Civic was in the development stages when they came out.

I know what you are saying about how American cars are part of American families, but remember, imports just took off really in the last 15-20 years. So when I am an adult, my kids will be getting imports from me, because I have more memories in a Civic than some old Parisienne or something.

It only takes one generation to change the world, and the generation in charge speaks for the whole world. The generation that is next in line to be adults are the kids who grew up loving and driving imports.

I voted just another concept as it is just that.
Oh, I love that Shelby from the previous page. Phat, tight, cool, gee whiz, wowee, and all other words cant describe that car, its the tits. :haha:

Oh, its my new wallpaper and thanks, props to the person posting it. :)

And the Civic still wouldn't have been the Blues Brothers' choice. Best guess in today's market would be the Mercury Marauder. Why? Because it's butch, brutish, and beastly. No Civic could live with that kind of character. Watch the Blues Brothers again. Then come back and tell us what kind of car they should drive today.

ok I just have 1 thing to say (another ****ing roadster)

I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
