My first attempt at drifting - be kind ;)

Hi all,

Right, I have never tried drifting before so thought that I would give it a bash last night.

Ground out done races to earn some capital and went and bought myself a Honda S2000 '06 upgraded and tuned it (big thanks to Ryjul240 for the tune).

So I hit the track. Autumn Mini. I should add at this point that I use a DFP wheel so I may be making things harder for myself from the off and boy is it hard.

The first hour was spent working on a set of corners that were quite flat but also quite open as I thought that gave me the best chance of actually catching a drift before hitting the wall. But, hit the wall I did many many times.

I think that I may have been a bit tentative to begin with, not carrying enough speed and not using enough opposite lock (boy do you have to spin that wheel a long way). I persevered.

After about 2 hours of failure I started to catch some drifts, albeit quite short and not very smokey. Then, to my great surprise, I hooked one up.

I captured it on my iPhone and uploaded it to YouTube, I have tried to add it below (I am on my iPhone now so it might not work). Would anyone be kind enough to look at it and give me some feedback on it?

Thanks

Scara

Is the one who tuned it tuning on a wheel on controller ?

Both have different types of tuning.
If you use a contoller setup on a wheel you're most likely gonna spin out cause you can't turn the wheel fast enough.

Not sure tbh, got the tune from the drift depot in this forum. Thought that I should give credit to the original tuner.

Very new to drifting so just learning and wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a pad/wheel tune as spend most of my time facing the wrong way anyway ;)

damn that's on a dfp? beast!

dfp only has 1 motor for ffb, the new logitechs have 2 motors for ffb. so props to you. can you still hold... damn i forgot, r2 select and something? i don't remember what to press but to change it to 180 degrees? i'm thinking it would be better, since the ffb motors can handle 180 degrees. it was better at least when i played lfs with a dfp.

Do you think that I would be more consistent switching to 180?

Also, does the DFGT have 2 ffb motors as I am thinking of upgrading.

I am going to practice some more tonight as I want to try to link the next set of corners. Not sure how yet, will just use trial and error.

With the ffb it was to slow for me when i use my wheel.
So what I did was after you plug in the AC outlet and once it does its testing rotation thing, try taking out the AC adapter. The wheel becomes much softer but you can't feel the road so its basically like using a controller but on a wheel.

If i were you i would start with 180, thats what i started on with LFS. You need to try and get the dynamics of drifting down first and their is no better way than with low steering degrees. When you can do it properly with 180, move to the next stage. Pitty you can not adjust the amount of degrees from within GT5, because going from 180 straight to 900 is like comparing night and day. In LFS i went from 180 to 360, then 720 and finally 900. Following steps like this makes it easier when you actually try 900 for the first time.

If you want to get into drifting more seriously i would scrape up the money for either the G25 or G27, just because of the increased wheel turn speed which is very helpful when going from one extreme of lock to the other, which can be effortless with these wheels just like in real life. With the DFP you really have to use some muscles and to me it does not feel natural.

Thanks for the advice. What did you think of the drift that I managed?

I am quite pleased with the amount of progress I made in quite a short timeframe.

I think I may drop the rotation down to 180 to see how I fare.

Thanks again.

Also another thing on the video before it cuts off.
Through those turns where the vid cuts off, down shift then once you pass that upshift and try and control the throttle all the way around till you hit the straight.

Thanks mate.

I stopped filming there as I came out of the drift. I will work on linking in the next section tonight and add another video. I will add it whether I succeed or fail as you guys may be able to give pointers either way.

nicely done dude... i gave up on trying to drift with my wheel and switched to a DS3, but I know the feeling you have when you first linked two turns, I just did it recently too. I'll be getting my HKS controller later today, so I can't wait to see how that performs.

Thanks buddy. It was a truly great 11 seconds :lol

I just want more. Now that I have hooked up a decent looking drift I need to go longer, faster and more sideways!!

I think I have been bitten!

haha yea once you get that first drift it becomes addicting, lately I have been working on getting as close to someone in a tandem without hitting them. That has been my poison for the past few days and I cannot get enough of it.

Haha

Looks like my A-Spec is going to take a backseat for a while.....until I need funds for my next drift car!

Nice!

Think I need to get to grips with my S2k before I go off and build a new one.

Still a novice!

Yea... I'm a Novice too, but I'm a professional photographer, so the photo mode is so much fun. I build the cars just so I can shoot them. For the most part, I drift with the 370Z... that's my favorite.

I will try and get some shots up later (on iPhone right now). I love photomode too.

I have never been into photography but I absolutely love the in game photography. I wish the replay screen had options to rewind. Me and some people I met last night did a couple one lap drift sessions I am going to sort through and get some good photos hopefully this weekend after finals week here at school. I will post them up in the gallery forum if yall are interested in checking them out.

I've shot drifting in real life for several years and have made acquaintance with several professional drifters... they've all said that the S2K was one of the hardest cars to drift. The weight balance is perfect, good for grip racing, not for drift, and the power band is very high in the revs, which means you really have to wring its neck. I don't know if reality transfer to GT life, but my guess is that it probably does translate somewhat... so I think if you learn to drift that, you'll be pretty good at drifting anything later.

Would love to see them once you have sorted them out.

I know what you mean. It is screaming round that bend.

I will perservere with it for now, otherwise can you recommend another car which may be a bit more forgiving?

professional drifters say the 350/370Z is the easiest to learn in... in real life... that's why I chose the 370Z.

Thats a premium car right? I only ask as I am using cockpit view.

Just out of interest, what view do you guys use? Am I making it harder for myself using cockpit?

yes it is premium. I use behind the car or better known as third person view. I like using that view because I can see drifters close to me and I feel I can get closer to the lead car when doing tandems. I used to drift first person but switched to third person. And let me tell you it was a huge change, I had to basically start from scratch learning to drift again. I do race cockpit view though when playing single player. I have also raced in a few online nascar races to give it a go. I get the most success with that racing third person view also.

Think I may be experimenting with the views as well tonight then.

Thanks for all your help guys. Will update the OP with the product of tonights session. It will be like my step by step journey in to drifting.

EDIT: meant to add, I normally race using number cam

I have a 350z that i tried drifting, interestingly i found it way harder to get sideways than an rx7 or silvia. They are just too damn grippy even with C:H tires.
