for about thirty thousand miles...

 Mmm...smelly...

It's worse with AWD, 'cos the drivetrain just soaks up the torque - you need even more revs to keep the car still on an up-slope. You can almost hear a little 'aaaaaaaarrrrggggghhhhh!!!!' from the clutch!

vat man: it sounds pretty ingenious. I wonder how many cars come with it.

Only a few Subarus (to my knowledge) have Hill Holder.

Isn't it just the Legacys and the Foresters?

Sheesh you guys are spoiled with your flat ground and your automatics! Hill starts are a key element to the driving experience in the UK. I had a manual car on which the handbrake didn't work for about three months (don't ask!). I truly perfected the art of the heel-and-toe hill start!

I was under the impression it was across the range now.

I used to do the heel & toe thing in my old rear drive Corolla, but mainly because I was really lazy and the accelerator was really close to the brake (which was handy when I was pressing on through the tight local roads).

Feh...come see me in my neck of the woods...not a lot of flat ground here. :)

Still a ton of automatics, tho...

Had the parking brake go in my Sentra, too, and had to heel-toe it on hills. I'm not as quick on the clutch as I used to be, though, since my clutch foot is now partially made of titanium. Hopefully I'll get it back.
