My horrible secret

I've dragged this old thing out and started a new game. I forgot how awful it looks - were we ever impressed with the look of it?

I'd also forgotten how much of a real 'car person' game it was, with the astonishing range of cars, particularly with the used car lot - shame you can't actually tell what that car following is once it's more than 3 car lengths behind.

The other thing I'd forgotten was how frenetic the racing was in the early races, particularly when you're shackled to a crap car (can't be bothered getting gold in the licenses) - the AI is much more inclined to try unusual lines into corners, and doesn't appear to realise that when drafting, it will arrive at a corner faster, and should have braked earlier.

You know, thinking on it, and I've probably said this before - if GT3 had been GT2, with GT3 standard graphics and car physics (including the GT Force wheel), and the bugs taken out, I think it would have been a more complete game than GT3 ended up being - much as I love GT3.

If GT4 is to GT3 what GT2 was to GT, then it will be awesome.

I don't really like GT3 all that much. Yeah, yeah, blasphemy, I know :P

Anyway, I find GT2's graphics to not exactly be horrible. In fact, they're pretty good by PSX standards. Try playing some of the other psx racing games, especially the older ones. If you don't die of a seizure or something after that, come back and tell me GT2's got bad graphics. ;)

The game-play is still better the GT3 in my experience. Sure the graphics are rough and pixelly, but when you are battling the computer/2nd player and have one corner to overtake them before the finish, the graphics are the last thing on your mind.

From what I have seen of GT4 prologue, the graphics are improved for sure, but they certainly dont get my pulse racing.

I remember when I popped the simulation disc of GT2 in for the First time. I was like a kid in a candy store "Wow HF Integrales, The Ford RS200, Jaguar XK's and XJ's, AMG C43! and on and on!" when I played GT3 I was like "Hey what happened to all the bloody cars!"

GT3 has better car physics, GT2's MR cars are abominable and the FF cars have almost no understeer.

Just think of it like this.

GT3 is the PS2 version of GT
GT4 is the PS2 version of GT2

I still prefer the way GT2's game is structured though, without those million race series at 20 laps each.

Recent bordem has encouraged me to break out GT2 again and i must say that despite the graphics (which u get used to) it really is a great game.

My general automotive knowledge when i was playing GT2 for the first time was very limited. I never realised how much i had missed the first time around and despite it being such a silly thing to worry about; adding a racing paint job to a normal car is so much fun!

For any of you guys who have it at home and haven't played it for a while......go straight to it right now and rediscover how much fun it can be.

I have been playing GT2 for a long time and I can't get enough of it and the graphics are as good as newer Ps games if not better. Like a lot of people said before there is so many cars
It has a replay factor that rapes any other Ps games even the newer ones!:D

I hated the way GT2 was structured, 5 laps 50,000Cr and a TVR Speed 12 worth 500,000Cr. Not exactley a challenge was it, I alsop missed the series races in GT2, I didn't like all thoes single races and you win a car for each events after a while I was just doing the three series races over and over again or the professional mode in the event generator.

I busted this out a little bit ago. . . Actually the last time that I had my PS2 and was able to use it. I started the game off with a first generation MR2 1600cc. The amount I forgot about the game. The uber slidage into everything, the AI snowplowing through everything and the fact that an MR2 was not made for the high speed ring under 220hp . . .

If polyphony does follow the sequel is better then the prequel pattern, I believe GT4 will be a finished product. I feel the 1st one needed GT2 to complement it. Now GT3 needs GT4 to complement it too. . . We all have our wishlists, but I will be happy with whatever it has because I know it is going to be another GT2 on the PS2 this time :D

No racing game made compares to GT2. I can't believe someone would take graphics over selection of cars. Not saying anyone is here, but the thought of it just.. grrr!.. lol. This is the one game I can always come back and play. It was my in-between games game when I used to play RPG's, now it's between racing games. I'm currently playing GT3, and sure, I like the fact that it has newer cars in it, but what happened to the CR-X?! And every other cool car you could find in the used lot.. it's just not cool to go to the Mitsu dealership and find there's no Evo III there. Anyways.. GT2 will always own the driving game-genre, unless of course, GT4 has the selection that GT2 did.

I think that GT2 had some of the best things a racing game can offer, except the game engine for driving in GT3. . . I think graphics make a lot of the games in current times and I also feel that a good portion of games are put out for for show instead of go. :D

And hopefully, GT4 goes back to the good things about performance, and not so much *just* graphics like Gran Turismo 3.
I would have to disagree with you there about the performance thing. I thing the game engine with the car performance wa a little better then GT2. I thought GT2 had a little too much slippage or traction lost compared to GT3. I also feel that GT3 had a little too much stick with a few of the cars in the game and a few with too little.

True, true. But theres some people, such as myself, who tune there car to slip as much as possible. :D

But yeah, I see where you're coming from. What I ment by performance, I ment they need to get a lot more performance vehicles into the game. Gran Turismo 3 had a better engine realistaclly, but to me, it's the selection of cars that ALWAYS brings me crying back to GT2.

I agree, I totally forgot about 40% of the cars in GT2 that I was amazed I could still run :D. I also missed the Race modification for a longtime but then started to like not having it. . .

I'm with you on the performance cars, GT2 had Venturi's, Vectors, the Elise GT1, the Espace F1, the RS200, Mustang SR ect.

Well, GT4 will bring back the hordes of cars for you fellas. I still contend that I get stuck on a few cars and I'm good to go. It's tracks I want. TRACKS!

Well your in look, GT4 will have at least 50 of them with forward and reverse variations.

50 different maps? Not just forward and reverse of the same ole thing?

One thing I thought was interesting ... a while back I played Mario Kart on GameCube. Instead of reverse directions for tracks they did a mirror image. If GT were to do mirrors and reverses they'd have four races from one map design. Pretty sweet.

I'm in a well look at me. . . :odd:

Anyways, Tracks are definately a part that is needed more of. . . It would sweet to be able to download a few as time goes on. . . More to learn and more to burn :D

And I stick by my guns: RANDOM MAP GENERATION! It doesn't have to be 100% random - in fact that scares me. You'd get a bunch of really crappy maps.

But if there was a system that allowed you to either specify certain qualities or even certain sections that you wanted included and it randomly connected them, that would be really cool.

I see a roller coaster track of off-camber switchbacks and long sweeping Chicanes coming :D

I dunno about all that, but I would like some major altituide changes and long sweeping curvs. The dead straights that last nearly 1km are tiresome.

thus off camber Switchbacks, long sweeping Chicanes and yeah Altitude drops and rises :D

I remember a really sweet Altitude drop and rise back i none of the GT2 license test I believe it was for the A license :D

Well PD said 100 tracks but you'd have to assume thats including forward and reverse, the mirrord tracks idea is good for arcade racers but it doesn't happen in real life so I wouldn't want that in GT.

Except that it provides 100% more tracks ... who gives a flip if they're "realistic" anyway? I mean, look at Seattle ... and Complex String.

How many tracks do we have in GT3? Twenty? So at least double ... awesome.

Not for me, imo mirrord tracks don't belong in a sim.

I remember they had a mirrored track in Ridge racer, it was wack. Definitely not in Gran Turismo.

Seattle Reverse owns you.

One track that was sorely missed in GT2 was SSR11, sorely missed.

When it came back in GT3 they made a wussed out version without the killer elevation change and then a very tight chicane.

What's the big deal about mirrored tracks? It's more difficult in real life, because of the set-up of barriers and gravel traps.

There are some corners that are completely different going the other way - the left-right-left complex after the start line at Trial Mountain, the left hander on to the back straight at Deep Forest - heck, in GTC Autumn Ring is completely different going the other way. I don't have an issue with it.

Thank you, Vat Man. Mirrored is no different in complexity or aukwardness than a reverse track. The only issue you boys have with it is that it can't be done in real life.

** NEWS FLASH **

YOU can't drive a Formula 1 car in real life either.

** NEWS FLASH **

The JGTC cars don't have 900 HP with a stage 3 turbo.

** NEWS FLASH **

IT'S A GAME.

Mirroring the tracks doubles the amount of available courses instantly. It's a no-brainer.
