Nasa reveal first HD photos of Mars.

"Frustrated with constant questions regarding a 'free-roam' mode in the Gran Turismo franchise, Polyphony Digital president Kazonuri Yamauchi was quoted as saying 'In our strive to be innovative, we are focused on making our next game entirely rally-centric, dutifully replicating the grueling Paris-Dakar auto race of old. Except on Mars.'

A Sony spokesman declined further comment."

.... I don't get it.

I think this thread has been moved from The GT section of the site here. Tornado was making the thread relevant to that area

Those pictures are incredible though.

Ahhh.

Before I bothered to notice who created this thread, I immediately assumed it was either Dotini, or Touring Mars.

Wow, this is fascinating. It looks (almost) like it could be a place on earth. I love how you can see the rovers tracks... the only thing to ever move across the red planets desolate landscape.

Also; There's lots of blue rocks?

Thanks for the share. 👍

The NASA website clarifies that this is a false color image.

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA15689

But yes, in real life, there are blue rocks on Mars. And blue skies, too, at the right time of day.

I wonder why they can't just give us a straight up image. File size(s) too big to transmit that far?

Me too. I can understand how they'd want to make the differences in material easier to see, but why not release a non-edited version as well?

^ It would be interesting to know what bits are false colour.

The whole thing, apparently.

wavelengths of 753 nanometers (near infrared), 535 nanometers (green) and 432 nanometers (violet).

This suggests the picture is taken over a wider spectrum than we can see in, so the colors will be slightly off. This also means there's no blue filter used, so trying to format this to RGB will likely be impossible without creating even more false color.

At least the image isn't as badly oversaturated in red as previous NASA images... looks almost like the real thing. :dopey:
