Nasa to announce something big May 14th?

Everything I've been reading online today suggests a black hole discovery. It seems the most logical given all the information floating around. One of the most exciting prospects was the NASA observed the Event Horizon of a black hole, but I honestly don't know if that is possible to do.

I doubt it's a black hole, but I guess it's possible.

And agreed about the apocalyptic-rock theory, I think that a) they'd tell us ASAP, and b) I doubt they've been searching for a rock that will kill us. Watching out for, definitely, but why would they go looking for it?

They have to look for it, to prevent the hit, or prepare us for it. However, I don't think its NASA who does it, as I recall its a spin-off of the SETI project that does that.

The black hole idea seems likely, otherwise we must have figured out exactly what dark matter is.

Or?

Event Horizon came home?

really looking forward to what it will be.

Would be great to get finally some real news about extraterestrials but i guess not.

Chris

My first post was a joke, but from what you guys are saying, I could be right!

Is anyone going to be watching/monitoring this?

Not me.. :( I thought 1pm EDT was 5 pm GMT (I think it is), but since we are in BST not GMT, I'm going to miss it (since it will be at 6pm our time, not 5pm)... I won't catch it as I am about to go to the pub for the UEFA cup final and probably get a bit PST...

I'd have put money on it being the black hole at the centre of the galaxy. What with it being an object, inside our galaxy, theorised about for 50 years and detectable via X-Ray observations.

But the thing about space is, it's black. And the thing about black holes is, they're black.

So 'ow you meant to see 'em?

Hope it doesn't turn out to be bits of grit on the scope!

Looks like you've still got 40 minutes to get your bets in.

Well I suppose if they emmit x-rays then a digital image could be formed using the intensity of x-rays emmited. That said I wasn't aware balckholes emmited x-rays (not that I would know). The only radiation from balckholes I am aware of is Hawking radiation but I don't know much about that either...

...So I think what I am trying to say is... err I have no idea. :D

Alright folks, trading is going to close in about 10 minutes.

There's been a huge run on Black Hole, that one's gonna cost ya. Stig, I've got you down for FHP (Famine's Home Planet). Robin you've got 10 shares of Rock and Fluff (RAFF), and I've got Road_Dogg down for Armageddon (QXXM) (though one has to wonder why he'd bother with this at all if he thinks the world is going to end.)

Give me 20 on supermassive black hole vomiting out a white dwarf.

Anyone got teh linky?

Edit Found it! and it appears I don't have real player either...

HAHA - 16 active users viewing this thread. I'll say a moon of some sort, based on nothing.

It's apparently a very young supernova remnant in our galaxy (near the center). They totally got my hopes up for a black hole. They really need some lessons in theatrics.

Lmao @ the Harvard expert.

"If you're sitting on a pepperoni near the crust, you can't see the mushrooms at the center of the pizza through all the mozzarella cheese."

If its only 140 light years away then why can't we see it. I thought supernova in our galaxy would be like an additional sun for a few days? not that I would know of course just myths I have heard.

He must have spent a day preparing that.

Haha @ the caller!

"Does this have anything to do with the moon crickets leaving earth"

From,
Chris.

They said that there's so much stardust in our galaxy that it blocks out the emitted visible light.

edit: LOL @ this caller. The moon crickets and the swoogee supernova?

Aww shame. Oh well, is there anything of particularly interesting about this announcemnent?
