With the current speed of HDD evolution i don't think you'll have to wait that long for them to be widely available.

For some additional ideas/options, here are the drives I just ordered, including a new replacement for my previous 160GB HDD for the PS3.

  • MicroNet GF500EU Fantom G-Force 500GB Dual Interface (eSATA / USB 2.0) 7200rpm 16MB cache HD
    • $101 w/Free Shipping from Buy.com
(for use with an SA 8300HD DVR)

  • Western Digital WDH1U5000N My Book Essential 2.0 500GB USB 2.0 HD
    • $100 w/Free Shipping from NewEgg.com
(for use with the PS3 & PC)

  • Western Digital WD3200BEVT Scorpio 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD
    • $130 w/Free Shipping from NewEgg.com
(to replace previous 160GB HDD in PS3)

The WD MyBook really are quality products. I think I'm going to pick myself up one soon.

OK i install it, Got it yesterday. The Toshiba, 7200rpm, 200GB, 16 catche
My two External HDDs did not work, I could not even start them up on my PC, IDKY why, well they are few years old...
So I just copy few save datas to my Stick duo flash memory
Install the new HDD, and everything works fine. It reads about 185, but I can only use 164GB, I'm still happy with that.
Only game so far I instal and transfer save data is GTA4, Installing game seemed a lot faster. And Loading is really really improved. Loading before the PICTURES seems faster, Once pictures show up, the Last Pic is the one with red car and that picture only displays less then 2 seconds. Maybe even a FULL second and game LOADS! :) so its improved
Going out of buildings is also a breeze now, Still shows that loading time, but seems that is cut by 1-2 seconds. :)

Online seems REALLY improved now. I think that 16 catche might be it. When I load lets say youtube, videos are a lot more clean in terms of frame rate.
When lets say, going to seriouswheels.com On my 60 gig, when scrolling down page, it scrolls fine for one second, then its jumpy. On my new HDD its fine scrolling all the way down, very smooth and improved.

So yeah I think it improved by a lot :), lot more then i thought it would.

The drive shouldn't be affecting Youtube and the web browsing. That would all be from the CPU/RAM/GPU. If anything, maybe the web browser has been improved in some updates. The only way that the HDD would have an effect on any of that would be if it was writing almost everything to a page file/swap location. That should happen only when its out of physical RAM though, if the PS3 even does that.

who knows if its using that catches or not, its a cell
But since its improved, I love it so far! :)
