so i just buy a home theater and i need to use it with my pc. i plugued a mp3 cable BUT i think it only make the home theater sound like normal speakers. can i make them work with the sides speakers, front, center and the base ? in 5.1 i mean. what cables do i need ? where do i plug them etc ? i need full help, i never plugged one before. thank you !

For music, or for movies? A stereo cable is not going to carry 5.1. Stereo is just that.... 2 channels, left and right. If that's what plays in the theater set, then it's performing correctly. If the movie's soundtrack is Dolby surround encoded, it will have phase tricks to build a rear channel, but you would have to select the Dolby Surround decoding on the theater set.

If the PC sound has an optical or coax output for digital sound, it may be able to transmit the 5.1 encoding on that, but with just a stereo plug, anything 5.1 would have to be simulated, i.e. made up from some programmer's idea of what it might sound like, by the theater system.

You should be able to go hdmi out from your graphics card to your surround sound and then hdmi from your surround found to tv. That's the best way to implement a surround sound system with a computer.

I second the HDMI route as my preferred HTPC hard wire option.
