Grid position is one of the most important factors in custom races...
So when I do custom championships, I use the reverse race result as starting order for the next race in most cases...in my experience this gives the most even and most "fair" results(with the car I am using always starting from the last position...)
Thanks. Theoretically that absolutely makes sense, and I did it similarly. However in my case this doesn't really work out - the fastest cars at the end of the grid would be supposed to overtake the slower cars, but way too often they just won't. Instead they stick nearly behind the slower opponents until the end of the race instead of overtaking unless they are much faster. With boost on, it's even worse, but also without boost it's not as it should.

I had a grid where the pole position car left the whole field much behind, so I decided to put him in the middle of the grid instead, with the intend that he would work his way forward during the race. But after ten laps he ended at only one position better than at the start :(
 
I have made a quick 2 lap race at the 24H Nurburgring to facilitate a quick but involved race to get the daily marathon miles. I usually pick any car, bring it back to "stock" as much as possible. Tyres are limited to SS for road, RS for race vehicles. I have been trying to achieve a clean race but no such luck.
I have one question about the AI, why is the programming for opponents so goofy? In a recent race I was in the Honda S600 '66 at stock hp of 65 (think) and P1 was a Renault Trophy and he easily ahead of me but then I see him lagging (?) I pass him in Wipperman and then we are on the Dottinger and he passes me like I was nothing. Why does the AI lag and slow down for me to catch up? I set race on Professional and still I find my little car catching higher HP cars...

In my opinion, the weird AI is the worst of all flaws in GT7. It's a topic not only in custom races. The difficulty levels are a joke as well, as "more difficult" only means "faster" - Professionals don't really drive "better" than beginners, only faster overall.

It would be way cooler if beginner AI would make a lot of mistakes such as braking too late or too early, not respecting the ideal line, colliding with opponents etc. while professionals would have the same speed as beginners but drive almost flawlessly.
 
If you're running a custom grid with tyrewear and some cars go till the end without pitting on dead tyres, just extend the number of laps by 1 or 2.

They just try to run the faster strategy by staying out, but if the race distance is extended, they can't stay out and instead pit

It worked great for my custom race touring car championship
 
What i find is that if I detune a high Hp car to get it to race other cars in same Hp range i cannot because the custom race programming picks the "random opponents " by the PP that is original to your high Hp car before you detuned it down to reasonable power and then you are racing against higher power cars and you are very underpowered yourself.
Example: the CHC 67 Nova is 700+ hp stock new, I use the ECU and power restrictor and bring it down to 383 hp. I have the custom race generator pick random to match and then I am up against Pagani's and such.
I just wanted an even playing level...

Boost Off has a major issue (or their baked in rubber banding kicks in since there's no boost). They will slow down to a crawl if you're too far behind. Boost Weak with a reduction on your ECU/power restrictor to 96% is the sweet spot, imo. Boost Weak helps them stick close and it stops them from slowing down so much if they're ahead.
