Neil Armstrong Passes Away

R.I.P Neil

This was to be read in the event of failure, but seems to strike the right chord.

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

Gods Speed Neil. You were one of a very chosen few.

All I can think of is that first footprint still (hopefully) up there. And I hope it's there forever. RIP Neil.

I guess I come across as a weirdo, but we all die sometime. I'm very glad, very proud of him that he died in 2012, having led a full life, hopefully a damn good one. Oh, and having accomplished one of the greatest mission attempted by mankind.

May your soul rest in peace sir!

You only need to look up at the sky to put into perspective how much he achieved, probably one of the most courageous men to have ever lived. RIP Neil.

I'd like to, first af all, wish him to rest in peace wherever or whatever he is now. I really respect Mr. Armstrong and, like every other gearhead, my childhood was full of admiration for the men that made the rockets and the men that flew them.

But I came here to ask what's the opinion of you guys on the moon landing conspiracy. Personally, I think the moon landing is true (so don't flame me!) but I've seen a buttload of people claiming otherwise. I think I have solid reasons for believing in the moon landing, but I researched the topic and looked at it from both sides of the story and coming to think of it both sides have interesting arguments. One that specially caught my attention was: "How a craft so nimble and so fragile endure such a journey with so much perils and at so much speed?"

The fact that the lunar landing had such a cultural impact and was so strategically and politically advantageous for the U.S is, I think, what motivates most of all this conspiracies. Personally, I have very strong opinions about the U.S (though, I must stress, I do not generalize and I don't blame the population for X or Y), but this is not the place to discuss them, and despite that I still admire the men of the space program because they proved that this funny little race of two-legged bugs are capable of doing amazing feats with their marvelous brain. It can be seen as a triumph for the U.S, but I prefer to see it as a triumph for all mankind.

I know that there are very reasonable and knowledgeable people in GTP, and especially a certain Mr. Touring Mars. So, bottomline, I'd like to know your rebuttals against the conspiracy and I do this without the intention to disrespect Armstrong's memory in any way.

I wasn't watching the news much today, so I've only just found out about this. It's a shame he passed due to surgery complications, but he'd done so much in his life and no one will ever forget what he achieved.

R.I.P. Neil.

Truly sad day. He will always be known by the obvious, but by then he had already contributed so much to aerospace exploration that it would have been enough. one of only two people outside of my family that I will ever shed tears for. All please look up to the moon tonight and thank one of the last true pioneers.

Sad day indeed. To think that it's been so long since we've been to the moon, that the guys who were there are now dying as old men.

And to put into perspective how brave they were:

I saw a documentary on the Apollo program some years back. In it they said that the rocket that lifts the lunar module off the moon, their only way home, had been test fired in space 6 times. It had only worked correctly on 3 of the tests.

But they went there anyway, so when you see the footage of Neil and Buzz Aldrin, joyfully hopping around on the moon. They knew that at the end they'd be climbing into the module and praying that the 50% successful lift-off rocket would work correctly this time.

Which is why the speech, quoted earlier, was written in case there was a failure of that rocket. The wording of the speech specifically mentions the two men left on the moon surface.

R.I.P Neil Armstrong. You took a step forward for mankind, steps that are marked in time. A mass loss for the world.

RIP. Can only imagine what it must've felt like to watch the lunar landings live.

I wish I had been alive at that time, as I am sure it was an amazing event.

A lot better than watching curiosity's landing on mars stream

Curiosity landing was a pretty awesome stream to watch. I will always remember being awake for it.

There's now one less man who has walked on another world. Such a terrible loss for all of humanity.

I'm drinking to you tonight, Neil.

I am also having a drink tonight in Neil's honor. We lost a great one today.

Regardless of whether you were intending to disrespect Armstrong's memory or not, this is still not the time and place for that discussion. It isn't appropriate, not to mention off topic. If you are interested in these "conspiracy" discussions, click here and have at it.

Anyway, R.I.P. Neil. I choose not to mourn, but rather to appreciate what he has done for mankind.

Me too, it was so awesome and a very nice detail that NASA streamed it for free :D, I was like, "Awesome, it landed!, let's go to sleep"

With all due respect to yourself, I believe a separate thread should be created for this. This is not the place for such debate.

RIP Dr Armstrong, in his own words, the "white-sock, pocket-protecting, nerdy Engineer" who truely went where no man has gone before.

A sad day in the world of space travel.

Must have been an incredible experience setting foot on another celestial body.

RIP. Can only imagine what it must've felt like to watch the lunar landings live.
It must have been amazing.
It was. Truly, it was.

Armstrong family statement: "Next time you walk outside on clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil and give him a wink." Beautiful thing to say.
An excellent sentiment. One that I'll keep in mind the next time I'm outdoors at night looking up. Just beautiful.

There's now one less man who has walked on another world. Such a terrible loss for all of humanity.

I'm drinking to you tonight, Neil.

Having done something that no one will ever be able to do 'first' again its a tragedy that he's now gone. Such a shame that he never got to see another generation walk on it again.

Kind of a sad commentary on how our priorities have changed.

RIP Mr. Armstrong, a true hero.
