Haha, yes! It actually looks really good!!! Better than the 7-series, anyway...

...M5 engine looks like it will be a 5.5 litre V-10 producing somewhere around 500 horsepower. I can't wait, and I will hold off buying an M5 until this comes out. (Ha, yeah right - that's why I'm holding off on buying an M5 ;))

Ahh!!! It's i-drive, or whatever they call that thing!!

I like the wagon.

The front three quarter view of the headlight reminds me of the Saab 9-5 - I don't mind the headlights.

The tailights are too big for the rear end, they make the car look like it's got a very short boot. It does look like an A4 in that fourth shot (the rear quarter view).

It's not as objectionable as the 7 series, I will grant that.

Finally! A BMW that really looks like a REAL BMW.

Z4, 7-series, the upcoming 6-series, and the "CS1"/1-series all sucks in a design matter.

If I have the money, I'll reserve the next-gen M5.

dum dum dum......it's I-drive. Maybe they fixed it this time around. I personally don't think it is the best looking BMW(IMO) but i'm still anxious to see the M5

From what I've heard, opinions are split. Some like the wagon, some like the sedan... I'm a sedan fan, myself - I don't like the wagon's front.

The E60 has arrived!!

it dont look to bad, but in my opinion the Z4 is the best looking of the new models. i cant wait until they bring out an M version of it

Well, I'll be seeing it in the flesh sometime next week at the Sydney Motor Show - I'll let you know.

With the face of a Kabuki mask, I will no longer fear an M5 in my rear view mirror, V10 or no. All kidding aside, it is better than the new 7, but that's not saying much. There's also the fact that i-don't-drive is far less complex (meaning that many functions have been relegated to other buttons), so that's something in the plus column. Still, all those swoopy curves make it look Hyundai-ish. I like my BMW's stodgy; old-fashioned, even. Good thing they've been built well for decades. When I get around to it years down the line, a 2003 M3 will still be worth it, but I won't be looking at anything new at that time. This new style Bangle(*) has brought on just isn't me.

(*) Word has it he didn't actually design much at BMW, but rather brought a few design ideas ("flame surfacing" among them) and let others do the metalwork. Case in point: Bangle did zero design on the Z4; it was all by someone else in his department, who was employed by BMW long before Bangle arrived. So while Bangle gave the OK, I'm not so sure he's 100% to blame for this load of tripe that is working its way down the production line. :(

What the hel* have they done to the Lights on the front :rscared:?

The rear looks great on the wagon but looks fat on the saloon, wouldn't fancy reversing it without gadgets (which :bmw: will no doubt have)?

Ill second that, the front looks awfull, I have been looking at the front lights and the shape reminda me of the lexus IS200/300 just stare at them long enough and youll get my drift. What the hell are BMW doing with their designs. Personally I prefer the sharper older look like this M3.

The cars just seem to get fatter and rounder?

what is "I-Drive"?
I-Drive is this system BMW came up for the recently released, 'controversially' styled 7 series.

Basically all functions of the car are controlled via that silver knob thing you see highlighted in the photos above.

I personally haven't tried it, but the MD at my company had one for a few days, looking to replace his 740iL, and hated it. Apparently simple, one step functions, like changing radio stations, are quite complex with I-Drive, and the system is difficult to learn and not intuitive.

I read somewhere that the head design guy at BMW was getting ragged on for designing cars that look the same, I geuss hes headed (sp?) their advice, that new 5 series dont look too bad. My friends dad works at BMW in Auckland and he 'borrows' the company cars everynight so people think my friend is rich because hes always being picked up in a bemmer.......

There's just a little more to the disaster that is iDrive: The location where the automatic lever (P, R, N, D, etc) is now empty to make room for the iDrive nubbin. The auto lever is now where your windshield wipers used to be ("Uh-oh, it's raining. Better slam it into reverse..."). The idea of the iDrive is great, but they went way too far. There's basically nothing on the dash. Thank god this isn't possible as a rental car. You'd just have figured out how to get stations other than the annoying evanglical baptist just when you're about to hand the keys back. :)

iDrive overly complicates changing the facking climate control to the point where you have to take your eyes off the road for way, way too long. I don't really forsee any accidents because of it - BMW drivers find their ways into enough wrecks - but it's still a hazard, and there should be some US department that bans it.

That said, you can change the weirdest stuff from iDrive. Suspension settings, even!

Why is it so odd that the auto lever is where the wipers belong? How long has it been since you drove an automatic American car, Hooligan? :)

Oh, and one of the absolute nuttiest things I've heard in my whole life is the theory that someone can hack into iDrive's database and disengage traction control while in a hard turn in the rain. Fackin' scary!!

I don't know what the big deal about the i-drive is. I know somebody who has the new 7 and he says it took about a month and a half to get used to it and now it's just second nature for him.

I can only hope.... :D

Just today. :) I, uh, had my car in the shop again. Another Focus loaner. But it's the last time I use this dealership -- I promise! Scratch my bumpers, will you.... But when was the last time you saw a 3-on-the-T? The only vehicles that still have the shifter on the steering column are vans and trucks, and that's because the seats are too high for other designs. Even the '89 Mercury Sable I had in college had a tunnel-mounted shifter (the last -- and so far only -- automatic I owned).

Yeah - actually you're not exactly right (really close :D). I remember the Crown Victorias and Grand Marks used to (they still might) have the shifter on the steering column. They just got a minor makeover this year. Is the Marauder going to be a convertible?
