Exclusive preview of Honda’s new 3door 200 hp Civic Type R Concept

Making its worldwide debut at the 76th Geneva Motor Show, Honda’s new Civic Type R Concept is not just another prototype, as it strongly hints at what the production car will look like when it reaches the European market towards the end of the year.

Based on the the new Civic 3-door which will appear too in Europe later this year, the Civic Type R Concept adopts the bold styling of the widely acclaimed 5-door hatchback version. The additional spoilers, the newly styled bumpers with bigger air vents and the huge alloys give the prototype the needed street-race look that anyone expects from a car of this category. Power comes from Honda's 200 PS 2.0-litre, DOHC i-VTEC unit, the same high-rev engine as used in the out-going model. It’s got the looks and its sure got the power, lets all pray that will be as exciting to drive at as it is to look at. The production version, like its predecessor, will be assembled at Honda's plant in Swindon, England

I saw a 5-door in the flesh yesterday.

Yes, it's really as ugly as it looks.

Hey, if it aint a Type R.

It aint a tyte car.

Horrible wheels and triangular exaust tip though.

Edit: Why does the front look like an oddesy?

Edit: edit: Why does the rear look like the front of an oddesy?

The back made me go "OHHHHH YEAH!" except for the gay exhaust pipe, then I saw the front and asked myself if someone at the Honda design team is introducing LSD to the rest of the employee's.

I'll wait for more pictures to give my final views, because so far they're very mixed.

Pretty sure its not the actual production picture but it already looks riced out!

What will Honda Fanboys have left to modify?

AHAHAHAAHA! This is great, everyone who likes Civics thinks it's a POS but I ACTUALLY LIKE IT AND I HATE CIVICS WITH A PASSION! I think the 2dr hatch is great--and I even like the yellow. Hah, this is truly great...finally a Civic that looks halfway decent and everyone knocks it. :sly: There's only one problem...please dear god tell Honda to make more than the PUNY 139lbft of torque that was in the SI. My Focus has 130lbft of torque--how's that for perspective. If they do a reduction in bhp to increase the torque it would be well worth it...hell the S2000 could also use a boost in torque but that's a different topic and a much better car.

Fugly. But, there is a reason behind that. Currently, we have legions of ricer idiots ruining the looks of otherwise perfectly fine Civics with their crappy bodykits, taillights, etc. But with this car, the ricers will instead actually improve the looks of the car for once, because it would take a total idiot to make that car look worse. On second thought, ricers are far from intelligent people...

As an aside, I'm sure the new Type-R is still a pleasure to drive though.

I just hope this doesn't mean anything drastic or the Integra Type-R in the near future. The ITR is actually one of my favorite cars and I would hate to see it change too extremely.

I've read quite a few good reviews about the new European Civic hatch...

They must not have seen it...

;)

The looks of the latest Civic grew on me much like the latest Impreza. Compared to the Civic Si of the previous generation, I'll admit. Looks pretty bad. I think Honda went a bit too edgy, maybe even too outlandish on this design. Many of you probably think that I'm soft on cars and never really bash Honda about anything.

ND4SPD, that's exactly what I thought at first (Post #7). I think it's important to note that this is a concept. You may like or hate concept cars, but don't write this one off early. This car does seem like an ultimate tuner car by some group with how the lines on it all look. I think I even remember in a magazine about someone making a Civic with an F1 design or something. The magazine name is undisclosed and cannot remember what it looked like.

Regardless, I think the lines will be more subtle with a hint of aggression when the car is released in its production trim. But if it turns out the final car looks exactly like this concept, then Honda's going to lose some fans.

IMO this has to be one of (if not the) worst factory "bodykits" since the Testarossa. The standard new Civic is almost decent, this is just terrible.

With the exception of the wheels and the ghastly Yellow paint (which reminds me of the Honda Civic 1.6 Vti "Jordan") I quite like it.

Now if only they would increase the current 200 BHP by 20 BHP (which is very possible iirc).

Ahh someone who finally knows what a jordan is - 👍

And the new type-r was suggested to have 240bhp a little while ago, but whether that was just talk - we will soon find out!

IMO - i like it, i do not think it will look like this when finalised though!

I reckon this car will come in with about 220hp.

Sounds optimistic but I sure hope you're on the money.

I like the car, yes it's a bit edgy and certainly a gamble from it's designers but I think it's refreshing and the last civic wasn't exactly like the one before it anyway. I've took the 5 door out for a test drive a few weeks back and was very impressed, it's well built, comfortable and modern inside. It's faster than I expected and very solid on the road. Pricey and new though. Buy a new car today and you'll loose £3K the moment it leaves the forecourt. Civic is going the same way as the Golf, started out as a "popular" cheap car and turned into something rather expensive.

Still with new edgy designs come strong opinions, some love it, some hate it.

1) We probably wont get the Type-R here in the States
2) Only 200bhp? Thats what our Si coupe has!
3) The European Civics are a bit more "fugly" than the ones we have in the US

Excuse me but when was the last time Honda brought a Civic Type-R to the states?

Last time I checked, NEVER. The only Type-R product we ever had was the Acura Integra Type-R of the mid/late '90s. Although it really is not vastly different than the Civic Type-R underneath (and under the hood), we have never had a Civic wearing the same badge.
