New GTO for 2008

Has anyone seen these pictures? This car looks great. I think that even though the current one looks nice, it shouldn't have a GTO badge on it. It should have a cavalier badge on it. Anyways, it looks like this ones going back to its roots in terms of styling.

I'm so sick of people saying the new GTO shouldn't have a GTO badge on it. Go drive one and tell me what you think, it's not a bad car, not as good as the F-Bodies but still nice.

Anyways I doubt the GTO will look anything like that upon production and yes they are redesigning the GTO, I've heard stuff around the office. Although it's locked up tight in the design dome and I can't get to the really secure levels of it.

That article is obviously a bit old, since the Zeta platform has been killed off. The next generation GTO is in doubt.

I'd love to see this coupe with an full trunk, instead of the hatch back design. Right now, the body looks kind a like the Skyline(V) IMO.

I'm not doubting the current GTO, but I'm sorry, that cars' look doesn't strike me as an GTO. I love the car, I just think they should have called it something else. :)

The people at GM didn't think so. People love retro crap, it's in right now. I mean my dad had a GTO way back when and he still says he wants a new one. They are just playing on old guys who have a ton of money and want a part of their childhood back.

Not really so, it's in the newest issue of Motor Trend. I guess they didn't get the news.

I think this one looks great.

I'm guessing it will be on the Sigma Platform or the Y Platform (not likely on that one).

Judging by the quality of the render, I'd say I'm almost 100% positive that Motor Trend came up with that picture, based on what they've been told/what they've heard. GM's designers aren't that bad at rendering. Motor Trend almost always features these kinds of "artist's renderings" for their own promotion. I have maybe 2 issues and one of them has "New MUSTANG!" on the cover, with "drawings" of what they thought it would look like. Same low-quality as this.

The worst was when Road and Track previewed the Enzo (F60). Man that was an abomination.

Words cannot express how much that "artist's rendering" makes me want to vomit.

The GTO used to be a classy, refined bruiser of a muscle car, only one notch below a Buick Gran Sport or Plymouth GTX in terms of luxury and performance. To try and dress it up as this ridiculous crass insult to the car's roots is sickening.

Jeez, doesn't GM remember the absolute hatred they received when they revealed this monstrosity?

NO RETRO FOR GTO!

Except as sale statistics show retro is what's in, not only in cars, but clothes, musics, etc. It's all about marketing.

Exactly. All about marketing. The article, like The359 said, is out-of-date (regardless of how new the issue is), because the Zeta platform has been scrapped -- along with GM's stock price.

I can't say anything bad about GM since they do pay my bills, but they have made some pretty bone headed moves. There stock will rebound, Ford was in the same boat a few years ago and I bought in then. Oh what a great move, should have bought more Ford was it was so low.

Which is why they're restructuring now.

There stock will rebound,

If they can increasing earnings next quarter.

Don't worry. It happens. :dopey:

I don't disagree with you about the Zeta platform, but the article is brand new.
Also, I didn't mean to say that the current GTO isn't a great car, I'm just saying that it looks like a cavalier on steroids.

Park one next to a real Cadavalier. They're not even in the same league, let alone the same ballpark. If I had a spare $25k lying around I'd buy a 2004 leftover in a moment and start bolting all manner of go-scary-fast bits onto it.

No, it's not a sports car. It's a Grand Tourer. Duh!

And what a grand tourer it is!

Honestly, the new GTO has power a plenty, a great stereo, is incredibly comfortable for both cruising and hard driving, grips the road while soaking up bumpy pavement, and is just plain a good car.

No, it doesn't smack around the Mustang. It's too busy fighting with the Infiniti G35 and BMW 330ci to worry about a plaything like the Mustang.

Honestly, I think that GM did a good job on the current GTO. The only quirk I have is that I wished they had recessed the grill. The retro craze going around is great and all, but some cars are just being crapified for the sake of sales. For instance, the new Charger, don't even get me started on that.

4 doors? ...... 4 doors? I do like the Daytona Ram though. :)

Actually, he didn't say the GTO looks like a Cavalier. He actually said it "looks like Cavalier on steroids". As far as the designs go, Cavalier wasn't a bad looking car and I do hear what homer was saying.

Really? I saw an GTO/Mustang comparo in one of the big name magazines and I thought stock Mustang GT kept up with the GTO. I read it long time ago, so I'm not 100% sure, but I remember being impressed with the Mustang for keeping up with an car like GTO.

I'm probably getting off topic, but I thought I would show a comparo I set up on...well Fords website. I tried to show the two models with their largest available engines. Don't mind the other two, that was for my personal interest. :)

I wasn't speaking about speed for speed. If we're simply talking about what numbers the car pulls, then the GTO is also competing with the Porsche Boxster and Subrau WRX STi.

The GTO is a gentleman's coupe. It's a big four seater with a big powerful engine and a grippy but comfortable suspension. As I said, it's competing in the same market as the Infiniti G35 and BMW 330ci.

The Mustang isn't even near that market, as well it shouldn't be as the Mustang has always been about cheap fun. The GTO has always stood for great performance value too, but not necessarily low price (take a look at the 1966 price of a fully loaded GTO, it starts to peck into Caddy territory).

To properly compare a car, you have to compare it to similar cars. The only similarity between the Mustang and the GTO is a V8 engine. The GTO is a GT, the Mustang is a sports car/coupe hybrid (termed ponycar in the states).

I found the article.

Mustang GT didn't do as good as I remembered, but still not bad. :)

Gotcha. Sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

The Mustang is as much of a grand touring car as the GTO.

It just does for it less moolah.

I'd say you're almost right, but not quite. Note that I have nothing at all against the Mustang, and like it a lot.

I agree with you. I think they have enough similarities to be in a same class.

Dude, all the magazines give the other cars victories because of stupid little "tid bits" like those. Don't let it bother you, at the end of the day most car enthusiasts can drive the cars better than their critics.

It really just comes down to the person, I mean every has their own opinion. Some people like the Mustang, others the GTO, but in the end we are all just a bunch of car guys.

Geez, I sound like Barry Meguiar.

Yeah, I read the reviews, but when the magazine do contest of cars, I don't really pay attention to how they rated them or which car won(ok, a little). I just read what they had to say, and decide for myself. Just like with the movie reviews. :)
