I've decided to open up this new forum dedicated to discussion on steering wheels and racing simulator cockpits based on quite a bit of feedback from users. There's a lot of discussion in our other forums regarding the Driving Force Pro wheel, and it only makes sense to provide an area dedicated for that topic. There are also many users who enjoy designing and constructing purpose-built racing cockpits, and that discussion is most certainly welcomed here. Maybe many more people will be encouraged to create their own setups!

Enjoy the new forums, everyone. :)

Somebody should start a compatible wheel + pedal thread like someone did with USB devices for the photomode uploads. I will if nobody else does but im posting quite a lot on this section of the forum and I dont want to seem like a post whore.

Vtec_guy, don't worry - as long as you're posting relevant, helpful information nobody can accuse you of being a post whore! If you really care about this topic, help make this forum best it can be and you will be rewarded for it with a lot of relevant discussion that interests you. :) I can create all the forums and sections that I want, but it's users like yourself who make this site truly great.

Two 👍 's up to Jordan for adding this particular forum! Way to go!
This will definitely help those who are interested in such things to get the necessary info/help/URL's they need to more thoroughly enjoy the GT series!

I'm really pleased with my cockpit, designed and made by former race car driver Bob Earl. He designed the VRC (virtual racing cockpit) to have you sit as you would in a formula car. Very adjustable and sturdy. Check attachment or go to BobEarlRacing.com.

Theres a big index web page somewhere with links to tons of websites that design/sell a wide range of cockpits. Ill try and find it and ill post it in here and in the wheel compatibility thread.

Just had this made by a friend of mine for 250$ Its really adjustable and looks wicked! Has a diamond plate pedal base, extendable wheel pole, 2 adjustment points on the pedal base. Im 6'2" and my girl is 5 foot nothing and a qucik adjustment and we can both play. Folds completely flat as well! I will send some better shots later!

You can see my projector screen in the background, Race Driver 2 has never been so sweet. Unfortunately GT4 looks crap visually on the projector, but Im all prepped for GT Vision, Race Driver 3 and Project Gotham 3!!

Anyone interested in this cockpit give me an email.

Damien

I've always been a little annoyed with myself for my driving style with the DFP, given that I seem compelled to drive as if I'm in a kart and relying on left foot braking and right foot throttle. I consider this a fault even though I found it almost completely necessary in order to pass the infamous Mission 34 by using throttle and brakes at the same time.

So what I've done to make this almost impossible for me to continue to do, is to move the pedal set to the right and use only my right foot for both braking and throttle. One result of doing this is that driving seems a lot more realistic, at least to me, since I'm driving about like I do when I go to the Wal-Mart in my '82 Toyota pick-up to get bath soap. So it is a little more fun than the old right throttle/left brake method.

And I think I'm going to fabricate a "clutch" pedal, which simply would be a sprung pedal attached to the "floorboard" of my cockpit, and give that a whirl. I do have a little practice double-clutching the pick-up since there's some slight clutch drag, so I might not be getting in too much trouble.

My thought is that I may not be the first to use/discover this adaptation of the use of the DFP wheelset, and I wonder if anyone else out there is already doing the right foot only method?

Otherwise, regarding cockpit configuration, I built mine using 3/4 birch plywood panels, well braced, and simply positioning the wheel and pedal set in the desired locations and using an ordinary folding chair with pieces of cushion and small pillows. The chair is clamped to the bottom plywood panel so the entire cockpit, pedals and wheel are essentially one piece. I used a configuration similar to what would be normal for a touring car rather than a sports racing or formula car, only because I spend more time with those cars than with the race cars. I'd be glad to post a picture of it if I can do that with just a .jpeg.

One other note is that I've gone through two DFP's, the first being unreliable and losing it's mind often and the new one being wonderful. Logitech sold me the second for $100 with free shipping.

i've designed it myself. a friend with the right tools built it for me. Now i have 2, and getting ready to make another 2.

I have 4 PS2, 4 GT4, 4 DFP. all i'm missing now are the 2 seats for the remaining 2 structures. I'm gonna promote and do the very first GT TOURNAMENT in my country early in 2006. Wish me luck.

Also i can't wait to try the game with the other 2 monitors on the sides... ;)

Very nice pedrov, I am planning to build mine, do you have any photo showing the structure how you mount the seat? Thanks

my cockpit will work with any wheel..any game system..can be changed to a flying sim...the seat is on a slide track...the wheel can be moved closer or farther for comfort...the peddels can be adjusted...it breaks down into three pices so you can put it up(who would do that)or take it to a friends house...you can use a seat out of the junk yard or buy a full blown racing seat..I think it's cool..let me know what you think..there are alot of cool ideas out there..you can see mine at www.simulatedmotorsports.com

Thanks!! Seat is mounted on two crossing bars from side to side of the sim. Hope you get what I mean. :scared:

good luck on the tournament...I have a dram of having them in the USA but think it will take ps3 to get to a level were you can run one smoothly...but I can see ppl wanting to watch as much as race in the tournament....

Hi.
Nice to see all the GT4 and sim. racing entusiasment ! I'm using the Petter Solberg cocpit and it's ok, but far from perfect. I want more stability, better seat and the possibility to maunt a LCD/Plasma TV on the cocpit.

Hydraulic feed back that give you more info about the track and the cars driving skill, is what I really think make the biggest improvement in simulation racing at home. check this : force-dynamics.com

Hey there omegalotus.....Do you have any pics and/or links of this particular cockpit by chance as I've not heard of it before?

Any information would be greatly appreciated! 👍

Thx-

I was wondering about the ECCI trackstar 6000 wheel!! Anyone with some info about this wheel??? Is it any good???

Why bother with a 1000$+ setup without ffb? :ill: :ill: :ill:
What??? $1000+??? I didn't know it was that expensive. Oops.
I find this very interested:
At ECCI, our position is that force feedback steering wheel effects in racing simulations are purely gaming effects and do not reflect a real world experience. Although they may be of some use to those who can read them, they most often are disruptive to control for someone relying on their real world driving instincts. Drawing on real world racing experience, we at ECCI understand that tire feedback and vehicle collision effects do not primarily manifest themselves in steering wheel reactions. ECCI's Monopoint cam resistance system was developed to allow the sim racer to drive intuitively through a completely fluid, seamless interface.

Just bought a Madcatz MC2 Mini tonight, been practicing on arcade mode free runs. I'm horrible with the thing, especially b/c the wheel is only 8" across, but I'm already having more fundriving , as it feels a little bit more like driving a real car. I'm taking a crash course (pun intented) with no aids, and manual, neither of which I've done before, let alone with a wheel.
My cockpit is fancy too: a high strength-low wieght wooden desk chair, and an ergonomic, adjustable lap. It's a poor man's setup, but it'll work.

I hope.
