New to the Whole Idea *Skylines*

ok here is the plan, I wanna build a car with either the R32-R34 model engine's, I need to know how can this be possible since I don't wanna import and go through all that cost...too much hassle! Pretty much what I want to do is take a car from here and put the Skyline engine in it instead, I have been told from some people where I live I can probably find parts here at a junkyard, for some reason I find it hard to believe!

I need help on mods and everything, I'm new to this sorta thing and I am willing to listen and learn, I am calling all Skyline fans cause I want something like a Skyline! Any car compare close to the Skyline that could be needing few mods to make it somewhat simialar to the Skyline? Also if anybody knows where I can get the Hayes or Chilton's manual on the Skyline that would be great also!

Buy a Skyline...

If you can find a private seller in your area who is getting rid of his, you don't need to import either.

You're looking at a car that is basically a computer-controlled laws-of-physics-breaker. Four wheel drive, four wheel steering, active downforce (on the R34s at least), active centre diff... As for Haynes manuals, forget it. Even changing the oil in one requires a degree in Skyline... (exaggeration. Just).

Just buy a Skyline. :D

Hahaha nicely put Famine :)

Seriously though, for my poor brothern in the good ol USA you guys are stuck. Even if you imported it yourself you would wind up paying MotoRex $10,000 + to comply it so you could drive it.

welcome to the board terry. as far as i am aware, like famine said, the skyline is much more than just its engine. its the computer that keeps everyhting in check and makes it so good. if you want a car that handles well get that. if you just want to learn about building engines etc get a kit car like an ultima and drop a chevy V8 inside and u'll have a great car as well as becoming a mechanical don in the process :D

We're not. If the car's in Britain all we need to pay is expenses for shipping (plus we need to purchase the car). Ship it on over to the British Virgin Islands, where the car requires no conversion, and drive it on BVI import plates anywhere in North America. Completely legal, my man.

seriously?...you have any links to the laws about that? I wanna know!

I agree with everyone else you need much more than an RB26DETT to have a skyline.....its kinda an accord with an H22....it may have a prelude engine but its still an accord.....

hey if m5's idea doesn't work wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a skyline from overseas ship it here and pay the 10,000 vs just buying it from motores or rb-motoring?

and one more thing recently on ebay someone from arizona was selling a skyline.....but it was an r32....but anyway it was a skyline so I figured Id contact him and make him a cash offer but the bid quickly got out of my range since I still have to pay about 100,000 for pharmacy school.....can you belive that? I coulda already had a friggin skyline....

the 2004 Chevy impala SS has tail lights kinda like a skyline. and comes with a 3.8L supercharged engine but i dont know if thats what ur looking for... id just rather buy an :bowdown:R34:crazy:

You value a car more then an education?

If you want the engine in a killer/sleeper of a car. Consider an S13 or S14 with the R26.
I was looking at the current issue of Sport Compact Car. There is a guy in California, right down the coast from you that has already built 6 of them for his customers.
I always wanted to find a wrecked Z and put the 3 liter V-6 in an S14.

Well, you could do it. It's a bit harder than I mention, and not quite as legal, but that's the gist.

hey terry learn more about cars first. a motor swap is a HUGE VERY COSTLY project and it takes lots of time. besides for the kind of money it would cost to do a engine swap with a skyline you could go get a Lotus or Maserati Coupe GT. think of the options you have with that much money.

And now the truth comes out...:P

Uh, Skylines aren't exactly cheap, and I think you'd want to buy the whole car...;)

Well some friends here told me to buy a Nissan 200SX and just make the mods to it, but the damn 1989-1994 drivers side is on the right side *NOOO* not exactly sure on the emissions rules which I am looking into in. Sorry I asn't quite clear about the engine part...I was also asking everything else that involves the engine so yes the computer parts I would have to look into...I'm just fishing around with people giving me ideas!

S13 with a Sil-Eighty conversion...

I can only imagine the amount of work needed to turn a 200SX from FR to 4WD, and THEN add an active differential and THEN make the rear axle steer. Not to mention the money required...

I know a guy that did that to a Datsun 510 wagon, complete tube frame, with a full GT-R drivetrain. I don't remeber everything about the car, but I believe it had upwards of about 470whp, and the car was only 1,9**lb dry wieght.

Fine, but you made me:

If you send the car through the British Virgin Islands, it is completely legal to drive the car on British Virgin Island export registration throughout the world, including the US, Mexico, and Canada. Unfortunately, unless you live on the British Virgin Islands, you can't get insurance since the car isn't truly registered at a British Virgin Islands address. That's not illegal, since if the car has an export registration, it doesn't need insurance, but if you get in an accident, you're paying. If you get pulled over, though, you should be fine - as I say, it's totally legal.

so in order to insure the thing all I would have to do is buy a shanty in the BVI? hell I could buy some empty land, put up a tin shed and throw up a mailbox and have my mail send to the US... then i have to get a BVI insurance company to cover me in the US? How come I cant get US insurance on a export registration? and since it is an export registration how often would I have to renew it?

and another thing how come I can bring it to the BVI then the us and it will be legal but not straight to the US? WTF is the difference besides that it's a pain in the ass?

Ummm you may want to conslut DOT on that one dude. That has been a topic brought up already in other forums and the results of one poor bugger's try with that was pretty expensive. Yep he got to drive it for a very short time, less than a year until he had to comply in the States. If memory servers me correct you are allowed to drive for a specified amount of time before you either have to ship it permantely off shore or comply it. Due to the fact that the car is what it is there is no real way around having to front up to MotoRex if want to keep it.

If you can dig up positive info, please post the link to the DOT regs on it, that would be fantastic! I would in fact save a few blokes a fair bit of mucking about and extra expense in getting one there from England where they are stationed in the Military. Right now they are in the same boat as a State side person.
