The driver was caught according to the NYPD. The scene is just a few blocks from the site of the former WTC. Identity has been released as 29 year old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov from Tampa, Florida.

He's not a Tampa native but an Uzbek national according to CBS's Bill Rehkopf.

Yea, he left the truck waving around a paintball gun and airsoft gun. Was shot in the chest but survived so they brought him to a hospital. So far no more info on if he's connected to anything or why he did it.

Hand written notes pledging allegiance to ISIS apparently, eyewitnesses report him shouting Allahu Akbar etc. Of those killed, 5 were Argentine tourists on a celebratory trip and a Belgian. The other two I haven't seen information on. A friend of his was already interviewed and described him as "friendly, nice and happy go lucky". He also said he loved America. Doesn't sound like your typical terrorist but of course it's still early.

...So the perp is alive? Good, then. Let him face the full might of the law. Throw the book at him, I say. No death penalty, though. Then he'd get what he wants.

Is Carrol Shelby's company still operating out of the Nevada Pen? Send him there and let him make our Mustangs and Cobras. I know it ultimately won't mean much, but at least he'd be paying something back to the society he tried to damage...

On a more serious note, I heard that the perp was from Uzbekistan. This.... might get ugly. Hopefully not.

This scares the 🤬 out of me. My brother works in Lower Manhattan and bikes to and from work, though, thankfully not in that particular area. What is with this trend of using vehicles as weapons?

Easy to acquire, high energy weapon. Usually can be disposed of too.
Oh, I know the reason, just not why... know what I mean? But I just can't wrap my head around any terrorism or violence at all. My brother is a cyclist in NYC, my best friend is a paramedic in London and suddenly I'm worrying about the ones I love being run over in these major cities. What a world.

Although I prefer the more final outcome on behalf of the terrorist, I'm glad this guy lived. Maybe they can get him to talk and learn more about this radicalization process first hand.

2017 will probably be known as the year of "cowards running out of ideas" terrorist attacks.

Airsoft, Paintball, and another 'let the vehicle do the work' cop-out of being a terrorist... c'mon.

The terrorist seems to be cooperating:

Afterward, as he lay wounded in the hospital, he asked to display the ISIS flag in his room and "stated that he felt good about what he had done," prosecutors said in court papers.

A law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News that Saipov had been interviewed in his hospital bed and described the suspect as "cooperative." The source added Saipov had not shown remorse for the attack, but stopped short of saying he had bragged about it.

The FBI announced later Wednesday that it was seeking a second person of interest for questioning in relation to the attack, but later announced that was no longer the case.

Saipov left behind knives and a note, handwritten in Arabic, that included Islamic religious references and said "it will endure" -- a phrase that commonly refers to ISIS, FBI agent Amber Tyree said in court papers.

When questioned, Saipov said he had been inspired by ISIS videos and began plotting an attack about a year ago, deciding to use a truck about two months ago, Tyree said. Saipov even rented a truck on Oct. 22 to practice making turns, Tyree said.

John Miller, deputy New York police commissioner for intelligence, said Saipov "appears to have followed, almost exactly to a T, the instructions that ISIS has put out."

In the past few years, ISIS has exhorted followers online to use vehicles, knives or other close-at-hand means of killing people in their home countries. England, France and Germany have all seen deadly vehicle attacks since mid-2016.

A November 2016 issue of the group's online magazine detailed features that an attack truck or van should have, suggested renting such a vehicle and recommended targeting crowded streets and outdoor gatherings, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, a militant-monitoring agency.

In Ohio, Saipov was an argumentative young man whose career was falling apart and who was "not happy with his life," said Mirrakhmat Muminov, a fellow truck driver from heavily Muslim Uzbekistan.

Saipov lost his insurance on his truck after his rates shot up because of a few traffic tickets, and companies stopped hiring him, said Muminov, 38, of Stow, Ohio. Muminov said he heard from Saipov's friends that Saipov's truck engine blew a few months ago in New Jersey.

Muminov said Saipov would get into arguments with friends and family, tangling over even small things, such as going to a picnic with the Uzbek community.

"He had the habit of disagreeing with everybody," Muminov said.

He said he and Saipov would sometimes argue about politics and world affairs, including Israel and Palestine. He said Saipov never spoke about ISIS, but he could tell his friend held radical views.
