Nextel Cup - Brazilian V8 Stock Cars - Round 2 - Curitiba

The race will happen this weekend. Some interesting facts that are worth to mention.

- The drivers using the Peugeot 307 Sedan body complained with the Stock Car association about the position of the rear spoiler, saying that it adds too much air resistance. They want the spoiler a bit lower.

- CBA ( The Brazilian Autoracing Confederation ) is studying a modification on the qualifying rules. Like i said on the other topic, 27 secured spots on the grid is too much. It seems it will be changed to the best TOP 10 from last year + champion and runner-up of the Stock Car Light championship. Still, the CTDN (the people from CBA responsible for rules and technical stuff) will discuss it this weekend.

Anyway, back to the topic. Round 2 at Curitiba, a track you guys probably know already, because of the WTCC.

Here are the results of the first practice, today:

I'll post the 2nd Free Practice + Pics later.

Race results

- Ricardo Zonta was battling for the third place on the podium, but on the last lap, he had a gearbox problem, lost the control of the car, and crashed into Cacá Bueno's car.

- Ricardo Maurício, winner of the first race, only did 5 laps, before retiring with
Engine problems.

- Like in the first race, with Ricardo Maurício, Rodrigo Sperafico got his first win on the series.

I'll try to post race pictures later.

Johnny, Do you have a source for `07 NextelCup engine rules in English that you can email me at m.fields@earthlink.net Nice images from Curitiba! Thanks, martin

I think i have all the 2007 technical rules in a .pdf file, but it's all in portuguese. :/ Any specific point you want to know about?

The basic info would be.

The engine is called "ZF Racing V8", it's a 5.7L V8, with the HP reduced from 700 to 450HP. There's also a RPM limiter, that limits the engine at 6.000 RPM. All this to make the engine more reliable and reduce maintenance costs.

It's important to say it does use carburators and not electronic fuel injection.

Anyway, tons of pictures of the Round 2 at Curitiba here:

Thanks for the velociadebrazil.com NextelCup images.

Specifically, what intake manifolds and carb spacers can/do they use? What do they say about carb work? What cyl. heads can they use, solid or roller tappet cam/rockers, compression ratio? Are these spec. engines, from a single supplier? Are they limited to 3 oil pump stg.s? Does CBA spec the harmonic damper and connecting rods? Do they spec the bore x stroke, stock or race block?

Would you send the `07 Portuguese rules .pdf file you mentioned to me?

Do you have images of the top side of the headers and engine?

The engines are sealed and equalized by ZF Racing, so i don't know.

Yes, from a single supplier ZF Racing. In essence the engine is the same as the one used in Nascar Busch Series, but with horse power lowered to 450HP and 6.000 RPM.

Are they limited to 3 oil pump stg.s?
Here the oil lubrification system. Hope it's what you asked.

Don't know if they spec it. It's a racing block, same used on Nascar Busch Series.

You can get more info about the engines here: ZF Racing : http://www.zfracing.com.br/eng/default.asp

I'll try to find it for you. But there are some pictures on the galleries i posted. Also, more pictures at Velocidade Online / Rodrigo Ruiz Photography

As a bonus, a picture with all the parts of the car (from last year). Some stuff might be added or changed.

Really appreciate all the answers to my questions, and the links and images. :)

Noticed a Holley carb on one of ZF's shop engine images and a work bench. If they use the Q-jet carb in Nextel Cup, how do we find out what carb spacer configuration they use? Is it an open-hole QJ carb to Holley 4-Bbl manifold flange adapter? How tall is it?

Do you think the series would be interested in a carb adapter that gave smoother power and better throttle control with fuel mileage and wear improvements?

While i was working at JF Racing, they used a special carb, that came from ZF Racing. As the engine is "equal" to everybody, they try to limit stuff as much as possible. Don't know if they changed this now, but i don't think they are using Q-jets. It's not very tall, that's for sure.

I don't see why they wouldn't be interested on it. I suggest you contact them through e-mail, at their website www.zfracing.com.br

These days i'm more a fan of the series. I worked on it for some years, but now i'm working on a new racing team that will participate on the Brazilian GT3 Series with 2 Aston Martin DBR9.

Thanks, welll get in touch with them. You may have furthered a kind of closer racing and cost reduction that Amercian stock car racing doesn't know about. I am impressed with the quality of the Brazilian Stock Car racing program.

Good luck with the GT3 and DBR9 racing.

That's great. Hope you can make a new partnership.

The series is trying to improve every year. Next year, it will used a totally new chassis (i posted some pics on this forum, on another topic).

EDITED: Found the topic: 2008 Chassis being tested -> https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=91732

And thanks for the good luck wishes. The Aston is one of the most fantastic cars i ever had the chance to work with. It grips like nothing else, it's very fast and very easy to setup.

For comparison, the Saleen S7R, although also very fast, has lots of problems with downforce. Last year at Interlagos 1000 Miles, one of the teams struggled to get a decent setup. It kept losing the rear end even at middle speed corners.

Well almost, the contact eMail address on their web site gives an error message? Their number is outside the U.S./Puerto Rico cell phone calling zone. Any other suggestions?

The 2008 prototype images were good. 👍 They are using the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake with a 1.00 carb spacer and a small Holley type 4-Bbl carb. They're also using crossover headers with both pipes out the passenger side. We could help these cars with the bang-for-the-buck performance they are heading towards.

I haven't had the chance to see the 2008 prototype yet, but people already told me it's great.

Have you tried to send the message through the internal "Make Contact" form at the website or through the e-mail: info@zfracing.com.br ?
