This is a thread I've prepared to allow you the chance to discuss the upcoming NHL season. Care to offer your thoughts as to who'll be the team to watch (among others)? Here are a few talking points...

* Who'll be the team to beat this season?
* What good team from last season could flounder mercilessly this upcoming season?
* Who all could be surprise teams this coming season?
* Who do you think will make the playoffs? And who will miss out?
* Who will be the best player this coming season?
* (optional) where else do you think the NHL should play outdoor games?

These topics and more will be key talking points before any team takes the ice this season. Let's preview the upcoming season!

This is now the official thread for this season of NHL action per the request of V1P3R. So have at it, hockey heads!

Leafs- *cries* Either way, I'm still a fan.

The Red Wings are running strong, though putting Chris Chelios in a more secondary role is interesting, considering his astounding fitness. The Penguins will certainly be out for more, and with a young team looks as if they can keep on going. Montreal will want revenge, but I think Carey Price will still take a bit of time to get over his blunders in the playoffs. However, he had training camp to do just that.

Outdoor games... Montreal?

Hmm... I definitely think Calgary is going to be a contender this season. I'm really hoping and pulling for Chicago and Washington to do really well this season too. The Sharks well... I think they'll be weaker and I don't have too high expectations hope since they usually choke come playoff time.

My (former) home-town Vancouver Canucks look to be even more pressed for scoring this year with the departure of long time captain Markus Naslund to the New York Rangers. I am a Sabres fan and don't see them having a strong year unless they can find some other people to step in and score goals by committee as their netminding is once again very strong.

Is this the year for the Washington Capitals? They are young, have the best pure goalscorer, have improved goaltending and now have some playoff experience.

I was always under the impression that the players went to the international championships first, then the NHL, but that was not the case.

Therefore, good point on the Capitals. Had my thoughts been correct, I would have believed that the Caps were without Ovechkin. And speaking of Calgary, would that not be a good place to hold an outdoor game, even if potentially out of season? (sorry, residents, but the weather is much colder there)

While I don't really watch hockey, I do wonder how the Dallas Stars do as they are the only Texas representative in the NHL. There was talk long ago of a Houston NHL team, but that never materialized (the Houston Aeros are still very cool in the IHL). Dallas usually has a pretty good team with Mike Modano and all.

This new NHL Network is on Dish and DirecTV. This is what gets me... the NFL Network is free, but you have to subscribe to NBA TV and NHL Network. Anyhow, I look for teams like Buffalo, Colorado, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and perhaps Carolina and Tampa Bay do be teams to watch. The Canadian tour de force will come down to Toronto and Ottawa. If my picks seem ludicrous, then it's because I'm not too good with the NHL.

NHL isn't as popular as the inferior bunch of sports unfortunately, but the people that are Hockey fans are really into the games so the networks know to milk as much money as possible. Try doing this with say NFL and you'd have mobs of people revolting.

Edit: Not to mention... NFL spectator capacity is what... Double/triple that of a Hockey arena? So, they can gouge the hell out of more people there and make up the funds.

Do you suggest moving another team from a hockey hotbed like Winnapeg or Minnesota to the south? By looking at teams such as the Coyotes, Lightning, and Panthers, I think it's pretty evident that the south just doesn't have enough interest in hockey yet.

Might want to change the title and lose Preview?

Anyways, nice to see Ott, Avery, and the SARS ripped a new one. lool

This is now the 2008-2009 thread. I'll be cheering on the Dallas Stars as my "home" team. I would have cheered on the Houston Aeros if the Aeros were an NHL team rather than an IHL team.

Martin Brodeur(?) of the Devils will miss about 3-4 months after having elbow surgery. Tough break for the Devils.

You guys are killin me, post. I'm not the only one here. :indiff:

Anyway...

Thanks Turco ur Awesome. lool

oh, yeah... Wash beat NY? ha ha...

Tampa beat Philly? ha ha ha...

Streak had to end sometime... oh well. The commentator said they played 7 game in 11 nights?

Oh and... Oh snap! Good job LA ripping another one to the SARS. Appreciated.

Sixteen games, and Barry Melrose will pretty much be heading back to being an ESPN analyst. He's no longer the coach for the Tampa Bay Lighting.

If there's one team I don't get, I'd have to go with Minnesota... I don't know how they win? Especially after a game like today's. If Wash was 100% and hadn't played how many game in how many nights? they'd have never had a chance.

As for today, it's a relatively good day. The SARS lost which is always a good thing.

Sean Avery of the Dallas Stars was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the NHL. And the NHL suspended him as opposed to the Dallas Stars suspending them. I haven't understand all parameters of this thing. But how do you all take this (for those of you that know this story more than I do)?

He was suspended for saying something referring to Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert, who used to be dating Avery. Here is the quote:

"I am happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's becoming like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds."

So he was suspended based on conduct "detrimental to the league or game of hockey". So its basically the 'sloppy second' part that everybody finds so bad, me personally, I wasn't too offended by it but becaause it was like a personal attack against other people in public.

The league suspended him indefinately, but there is going to be hearing with Gary Bettman tomorrow or Friday to talk about it. I actually would have rather the Dallas Stars suspend him than the league because I'm not sure if the league should be able to control what he says, I thought the NHLPA would have something to say about that (even though every other player hates him).

It's all really unfortunate for Avery, I don't like him, but he is a very good hockey player if he sticks to playing hockey and not all the antics off the ice. Basically what he has done is talked his way out of a job in Dallas and possibly the entire NHL.

I'm currently watching a little of the end of Buffalo at Pittsburgh. It's 45:4 left in the third period. The Penguins ended up losing 4-3 to Buffalo. Up next on Versus involves the Philadelphia Flyers hosting the New York Islanders.

Various NHL Results from today's games (team in CAPITAL letters is home team:

* 3-2; New York Rangers def. ATLANTA THRASHERS in Overtime.
* 4-2; BUFFALO SABRES def. Pittsburgh Penguins.
* 4-3; DETROIT RED WINGS def. Calgary Flames in Overtime.
* 5-3; Phoenix Coyotes def. Dallas Stars. Stars are 10-13-4 overall, and 5th in the Pacific Standings
* 2-0; CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS def. Ottawa Senators.
* 4-1; NEW JERSEY DEVILS def. Pittsburgh Penguins.
* 3-1; WASHINGTON CAPITALS def. Boston Bruins.

There's your update.

One lopsided victory and one offensive shootout...

Boston beat Toronto 8-5 at Boston. Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks got spanked 6-0 at Detroit. The Sharks' string of 15-straight games with a score comes to a screeching halt in MoTown. There may be some economic issues with the Big Three automakers in Detroit, but the Red Wings were money against San Jose.

The Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings... at Wrigley Field! The outdoor stadium thing is catching on for hockey. The Red Wings won 6-4 in this match.

Must say Phoenix have been OK this season. They're got the NY Islanders next...so they should own them.

January 25th in Montreal marks the NHL All-Star Game. Who would you vote to compete in the All-Star Game later this month?
