"Nick's 8-6": My Toyota AE86

My AE86 has been through a lot in the past year or so I've owned it, I'll share what's going on with it and future builds to come:
When I bought the thing last year, it had 383k on the odometer, my parents were suspicious, but since I had no clue how to drive manual I couldn't test out if it was any good or not. The guy I bought it from works at a tune-up shop and he restored it and kept it healthy till someone bought it, turns out he's a drifter and he's got an AE86 too!
This is what the 8-6 looked like when I first bought it:

Yeah it was an ugly gray and it was all faded and looked gross! The springs were cut when I got it, so I had to improvise and put some coilovers from Ground Control in, they're actually pretty nice and I can adjust the ride height. About a month later I painted it white, going for the high-tech two tone we all know and love:

But THEN LAST OCTOBER, I got a bit too ambitious on a drive home, I suddenly realized I wasn't Takumi, and then this happened:

I bent the frame on the poor thing, took all the money I had to fix it and get it running again, luckily my dad and I were competent enough to take over after getting the frame pulled. It still has a dent in the hood, but it's not very noticeable :P
Then in February, I got a rattle-can and decided it's been just white for too long:

Took two solid days to make it perfect, then I bought me some JDM decals, and:

Not too shabby! Then after that I've installed my sports muffler and that's about it. For now most of my money's gone into restoring the thing, now I plan on upgrading, the car's only gonna get better from here on out, and it's gonna kick ass! My goal's to drop a 4-AGZE supercharged engine into this baby one day, this 4-AC can't die and all, but seriously no power's a no-no in an almost pure sports car :P

More to come in the not too distant future as soon as I stop being poor and can afford some parts!

Strangely enough, it won't let me display my images from my crash and the backside of the new paint, so just use these for references I guess:

Over 600 thousand kilometres? Damn.

Looks like a nice car, is it the SR5?

Hint, AutoX of track days are a better way to have fun.;)

I can see the pics.

It's an SR5 underneath yeah =P But it's still so much fun to drive and when I drift it I don't need to worry about changing tires since it has such little power! But yeah I learned my less on after that accident, I'm sticking to the track from now on!

Nice.

If I may ask, how much did you pick it up for?

I would think it to be fairly cheap for that mileage.

You're pretty lucky to have a Hachi-Roku. I've wanted one of those for so long. Great project car, let alone it being a great car to have fun in. Happy driving, or maybe, should I say happy drifting? Awesome car, man.

Awww...dude...that car looks AMAZING. I mean, the kind of car lots of us dreamt to be able to have as our first car. I hope you enjoy it every second of your ownership! :D

Thanks man! It really is a great experience, every time I hop into that car, a smile is bound to ensue :D I love that little car to death!

How did you come across this 86?
I found it on craigslist, the guy who owned it before me is a drifter and he uses a red Levin nowadays. It was his shop's kinda fool around AE86 that was in a pretty big car magazine according to a friend of mine in our owner's group. But yeah he just put most of the stock parts on and sold it to me. I plan on restoring it to it's former glory but that's gotta wait till I can get my hands on a 4-AGZE :P

Nice car. Has an honest simplicity about it I find quite appealing. That it's done such huge mileage is also cool, and it's still going!

Ahh the mighty 3A-U engine. What does the chassis tag on this car say? I'd be surprised if it was actually an AE86 as they didn't come with 3A engines. It would be an AE85.

AE85 = 3A-U with smaller K series rear differential and lower spec suspension.
AE86 = 4A-GE with T series rear differential and uprated suspension.

Either way it's still a cool car and I'd have an 85 or 86 Levin hatch any day.

Great find, I hope it goes well for you.

I'm pretty sure it's a 4A-C.

It's a legit AE86 man, that's what's on the build plate and the U.S. never even got the AE85. The SR5 AE86 has the 4-AC engine, which yes is a single cam carb engine but the SR5 still uses the T50 transmission. Besides, my rear end has been stiffened thanks to some AGX shock absorbers. It just needs an LSD and it's good.

It's not that I don't appreciate the questions, it's just that there have been like 20 people who claim they know the car I love to death and live with better than I do and that kinda gets to me.

It's not you it's me :P Sorry if this comes off as kinda rude, if I ever go to Australia or you come to Cali, I'll let you try out the 8-6 ;D

I knew that much =P New Zealand got the Levins right? Those are rare over here in the U.S., we gotta import a levin front end if we wanna convert it XD

The AE86 sells for on average 20 thousand dollars in New Zealand.

For reference, an FD goes for roughly 15 grand and an R32 GTR starts at 23 grand.

This is why I'm intending on buying a handful of them from Japan and importing them here to sell on since they're so worthless over there ;)

Everyone in Japan saves them, there are garages dedicated just to AE86 restoration! It's crazy! But seriously 20 G's for a corolla? :P That's nuts, we can get them for around 5 grand here, a decent one at least when it bothers to go on sale :)

I have a friend in the states who's had 5 different AE86s over the years, he's never spent more than 1 grand for any of them.

But in Japan you find them at auction with a 0 yen reserve price and they will often sell for very little because it's such an old car. Enthusiasts may hunt them down but to the general pop they're worthless.
