I am not "acting" sarcastic. I am sarcastic.

Liking it is not the issue. I think it is stupid. When I think about it I go

Okay. I'll give into the pressure...

I think it is an excessive fad. I think it is for people who want a car to impress the neighbors with the GX470 who are trying to impress the nieghbors with the ML320 who are trying to impress the guy with the LandRover who is one-upping the guy with the 4Runner who thinks it's better than a Cherokee because it cost more.

I look forward to the day the SUV fad runs out of gas.

why? Why do you want the fad to run dry?(note:what do you own?)

Maybe I'm sort of a purist. 4X4's shoud be that, ready to go anywhere. Cars should be that, cars for pavement and able to perform.

Lately there is this confusion and it seems to be taking over. Everybody wants a bigger vehicle, but they don't want a truck, and they can't make cars much bigger, so they get things like this to go to the corner for milk in. Seems silly.

But I guess they're just giving the people what they want.

*I do like the new Nissan grille though. They put it on the new Maxima, which I do like.

I want the fad to run dry because they're wasteful, excessive, physically dangerous to other road users, they block line of sight of other road users, they have poorer active safety and currently seem to be the focus of one-up manship that milefile described. What's next after the twin-turbo Cayenne?

In the rush to get models on the market we've seen manufacturers rush fault-laden low quality vehicles onto the market (first generation Landrover Freelander comes to mind, let's not get into the problems of the US-built Escape/Tribute, plus the first generation M Class is probably the poorest quality Benz built, and it's probably best if we don't mention the whole Explorer/Firestone thing).

I drive a Subaru Liberty RX/Legacy GT sedan.

I've been driving Jeep Cherokees for a long time. All these other so-called SUV's make me (and everyone who got one for a legit reason) look bad. It used to be only people who wanted to get to their campsite in the mountains (or something like that) got a 4X4. Now they are conspicuous consumption. I'm actually embarassed to drive an SUV now.

The Murano is far less interesting than it's FX35/45 counterpart, and I don't especially care for the FX (it's substantial performance abilities notwithstanding). However, I think Peugeot is having far too much influence on Nissan design. First the Altima gets quirky looking, then the Murano debuts, and now the Maxima looks like an overfed Ion (another car I detest) with inexplicable longitudinal sunroofs. Someone get Nissan back on the Toyota track. It could have been bland, but certainly not hideous like it is now.

One of my choices for my second car (for my daily driver) was a new Ram 2500 4x4 with some other packages with it. The thing is Im actually going to put the 4WD system to use other than getting the groceries. Our car club has some small "Expeditions" planned on some off road trails in the Appalation Mtns. Ive seen some pictures from my neighbor (a member too) who went, looks fun :). Plus I can cut off 4 minutes by taking a trail near my house instead of the road to school (because of this stupid stoplight that stays RED for 6 minutes and green for 10 seconds). I like keeping the mud on the vehicle, like a badge to seperate the High class Weeny SUV's and trucks from the actual"'I-dont-give-a-crap-whats-in-front-of-me-I''ll-just-go-over-it" SUV's. I like SUV's, but only if they are used for what they are built for. I see alot of car based SUV's out there. If its CAR based, keep it a car. Most SUV's will never even see mud go above the fender line, let alone see any mud on it or any battle scars...

The Murano looks like an electric steam iron. I hate it. The only thing currently uglier is the FX45, which looks like a rejected prototype for a Nike running shoe.

I saw a Cayenne today. It's really not bad from the rear quarter, but from the front it just doesn't swing. It looks like a Carerra with an airbag suspension set on "flood pants".

how can you hate a car, especially on looks alone. i can understand if you dislike a car, yet hate seems a strong word. especially if you have not driven it.

Are they even 4X4?

Dunno, but to be honest they don't need to be - Nissan is playing this right by not advertising that they can climb hills and what not. Showing they're built for the city is certainly a step in the right direction. And from that, you can clearly see where the preformance comes in handy. 325 is a lot of horsepower for a small wagon/SUV.

You're basically asking Nissan to become bland, conservative, and staid as Toyota is. Don't forget - Nissan is doing better now (under Carlos Ghosn) than in its history, and remember that the Altima is selling better than ever in its eight-year history. I regard my purchase of a new V6 Altima as the best new-car buy I ever made not counting our Volvo.

The Murano isn't pretty (neither's the FX45) but Nissan isn't selling them as anything they aren't. They're certainly selling them, though. I've already seen a new Maxima, and, though I can say it looks just as bad on-road as it does in pictures, I can also say it's probably a hit and definitely an improvement over the old one.

PS on the Ion - in my lifetime, this is the worst car ever to come out of GM and that's saying a lot. Saturn began in 1990 as cutting edge and has taken a mere 13 years to be the producer of the single worst small sedan for sale (yes, worse than the Rio because at least the Rio has price and low warranty). Have they done any actual research? I love the ads, but get real - I'd love to say Saturn's hit rock bottom, but I think there's still further for them to fall. To quote 'car's' Fiat Stilo quip: Why settle for an average car in a segment full of great ones?

Somebody mentioned it looks like a PT and lo-and-behold, it really does look like a less bulbous PT. Score for Chrysler I guess.

I also watched Motor Trend TV over the weekend and they reviewed the Murano, Endeavor, and Some Toyota SUV. The only interesting thing about the Murano was the transmission. It doesn't shift, continuous or something. I can't remember what they called it (I think I was wiping baby puke off my shoulder). Anybody know anything about this (the transmission, not puke)?

The Murano is basically a front wheel drive sedan with "on demand" all wheel drive so it's not really a 4X4. It's got decent HP but it's so heavy it doesn't amount to much.

I just wonder how many SUV's the world needs. Here in AZ cars are literally a minority. More than half the cars on the road are either SUVs or trucks.

And that's another thing I can't stand... all these people with full sized pick-ups for no reason whatsoever. They'll never put anything in the back besides a cooler.

Yeah - Continually Variable Transmission. Basically, you said it - it's continuous, so it doesn't shift. I'm unsure about this, but I think Audi originally developed it for use in the TT and A4. Honda and Toyota both use it on their hybrids, and it saves gas mileage, slightly. A few other cars utilise it, also.

I'd doubt that. Texas is the worldwide home of trucks and we've got more cars than trucks by far.

On a personal note, I purchased my first ever full-size pickup today. Fortunately, I'll do a bit more than cooler-hauling. I need to find a nice big 'Don't Mess With Texas' bumper sticker for it...
