Well you start by getting something to make animated gifs with. I'm using ImageReady 2. It comes with Photoshop 5.5 and Photoshop 6. Unfortunately, this package is over $600. A cheaper route would be Animation Shop which is packaged with Paintshop Pro, latest version is 7. I think it sells for around $100. There are also lots of free programs that can do similar work, but it takes a lot more work on the user side.
Creating an animated GIF to use as an avatar on GTPlanet:
Think of what you want it to look like.
Get the pictures you want to use.
Open all the pictures in your gif editing program.
Make a new document that is 75 pixels by 75 pixels.
Create the first slide.
(from here it will be different for each program ... so I don't know how much help this could be. these instructions will be for ImageReady 2)
Crop your images to 75px x 75px, copy, and paste the piece to the new document as its own layer.
Each slide is just an arangement of visible and nonvisible layers. So we turn on the layer that we want visible on that slide.
Right under the slide is where you set how long that slide is shown. "0" will run through that slide as fast as the computer displaying it can show.
Make a new slide. Turn on the image you want to have visible.
For text, just use the text tool to create text. Turn it on for the slide you want and place it where it needs to be.
For this avatar
I had to make each letter seperate so I could move them independantly. I used the Opacity feature to make the Mazda logo appear to fade in.
I'm sure you're going to have questions, so ask away (:
