Nominate your favorite automotive journalist[s]

Not even sure he deserves a mention...
He may as well have a hand up his rear as he does that GT3 review.
Recap of that review:
Bad stuff about GT3, aka I do not like green eggs and ham.
omg, OMG, I love green eggs and ham! This PDK is on par with the pinnacle of gear boxes and I don't miss the stick or the old steering or the old engine.
Calming down... Oh wait, let me test it on the road...
HMMM, I hate on the GT3 for its electric gizmos, pdk, and steering feel, let me get a car to compare it with... As a self proclaimed 911 geek I think the best car would be- a GTR. :odd:
OK, done with the gtr and no real complaints, now back to the GT3.
What's this? I love it, still love it no doubt... Oh wait, I'm a car journalist, can't do certain things and so... "Just a little" is lost in the steering and the engine.
/endreview

Old boy basically sounds like he's a kid who loves the GT3 every time he gets into driving and then slows it down, dials back his passion and parrots the haters who can't stand the idea of electric steering or new engines.
I mean, he's literally complaining about the gearbox and engine while stroking his earlobe and shifting gears in a turn as the car revs past most cars' redlines. /derp
You can't exactly comapre it to another car without exactly driving the other car, he isn't as good as the other two I mentioned because his actual journo skills are not as good I was mainly crediting him for his driving.

But that 911 review was good in it's built up starting slowly then building up to the point. And I Rate it his best because I found it better then Chris Harris Review on the same car.

A Notable coincidence is all 3 are originally from EVO with only Chris harris not being currently with them.

Just watching the Henry Catchpole video I put up shows you the depth of Talent the Video crew at EVO have with Top Gear levels of Filming talent.

I know they say that a journalist has to be a good storyteller, but they're generally embellishments of true stories rather than just completely fictional ones. With Doug I simply can't trust that he's telling a story rather than a tale, particularly given how close his stories are to the tales he used to tell GTP, so I choose not to invest my time in them. And yes, he's lost none of the arrogance that he had before his GTP sabbatical.

Absolutely. He's got a bad case of privilege, but then again, a lot of people do here on the Internet.

My biggest problem with a Jalopnik-era Demuro? His horrible taste in clothing in his videos. C'mon, man. Put on a nice pair of jeans and actual shoes if we're going to see you from head to toe.

He might want to wear a mask if we have to see his face too.

Alex Goy. Top bloke. He started the journo thing around the same time I did, so it's a pleasure to see how well he's doing now with the video stuff.

Yep that's him, also I'd fund your own Youtube videos in a heartbeat.

I'll be the nth person to say...

Harris-458-Spider.jpg

Harris Monkey!

Bulgin was always my favorite, but of the current crop... Chris Harris, Richard Meaden and Steve Sutcliffe.

Overall, Harris is by far the most entertaining out there IMO. He can write and do the video stuff, and he can actually drive. Meaden writes fantastic stuff for the specialist Porsche mags, and Sutcliffe is another Journo who can actually drive.

The EVO boys are mostly way too far up their own arses. And if I never had to read another Anthony FF article for the rest of my days it would be a good... he tries to be funny, and fails miserably... give it up, you're not going to turn yourself in to JC.

A special mention for whoever pulls the Petrolicious stuff together... stunningly beautiful car filming.

...what the hell did I just watch? :odd:

This got me thinking: if we can nominate anybody, not just current writers, I might as well get the Setright nomination out of the way. I was too young to really appreciate him when I started reading his columns, but revisiting them a few years ago, I love his style.

This, a thousand times this.

Randy Pobst is a fantastic teacher and that also makes him a fantastic car reviewer. He's got the experience to know when he's in a good car and the story telling ability to convey why that is to the viewer, even novices.

should we make a separate topic on those that are just Car reviewers rather then just journalists.

When it comes to someone who just a pure Car reviewer I don't mind Matt Farah even if he can be kind of douchey sometimes, he also will comment alot on his Youtube videos on his Smoking Tire and /Drive Videos and has Answered multiple questions I have Asked, and definitely has a vast knowledge of cars.

I'm not sure if this counts (he's not really a journalist), but this guy is straight up AWESOME.

He's the best.

Is that YouTuber ThatDudeinBlue?

I'll give another vote to David Freiburger since I love his articles. Plus, he owns the real F-Bomb Camaro that featured in The Fast And Furious 4. The guy also does off road stuff as well. He guested in this Dirt Every Day episode that involved getting a Jeep that hadn't run in years to run and drive in three days. So, in that regard, this D.E.D. is kind of like a Roadkill episode.

Steve stutcliffe annoys me in the fact he always chooses the most stupidest car comparisons to do his reviews on.

He is an epic driver though.

Oh wow M5power . He gave me many enjoyable moments back in the day. He could easily go down as one of the most pretentious arsehats from that era of GTP. I always wondered what happened to him.

I have always enjoyed Dave Coleman, with the lunacy he would come up with to make SCC interesting got me hooked. I mean Monkeypower how do you beat out Monkeypower. Also the Nissan Sentra that the staff hacked to pieces for a 2 second improvement on the quarter mile was absolutely brilliant. The hate mail he got from that one article goes down in one of SCC top 5 moments.

Chris Harris is one of few journalists today who can judge cars' performance attributes for what they are because he is a pure racing and technical enthusiast. He's still practical and can tell you how well a car carries groceries, etc, but anybody can do that. Everybody has daily needs that cars need to meet so that is easy to judge. But not everybody is truly passionate about how things work and how to go fast. That sort of knowledge is sorely lacking in the journalist community but Chris Harris definitely has it. I think he's probably the best in the business right now.

Shocked that it took 48 posts to nominate JC. I didn't originally suggest him nor Tiff (which I'm about to do) because I thought surely they would be mentioned.

On the subject of Tiff. I think he's fantastic. I don't know of another tele-journalist who conveys such real-time excitement and stream-of-consciousness type subjectivity, but it always comes across as very genuine. And, like Harry, he seems like a guy I wouldn't mind having a beer with.

Of course this has to be posted:

Steve Cropley of Autocar. Met him during my work experience there and he complimented my tie. His writing is just so full of unabashed nerdy enthusiasm and straight-talking Aussie honesty.

Jeremy Clarkson *grabs popcorn*

He's a wonderful writer and... erh... comedian... but that grain of salt, by this point, has become rather heavy:

I do own one or two Clarkson books, mind, and I read his column when it comes out in our edition of the magazine. But not particularly because I'm looking for any practical advice, mind you.

I was impressed with Harris from the moment I heard that he had bad mouthed the MX-5, especially considering much of his readership is the TRACK DAY BRO crowd.

There was a period on TTAC where there was a slew of extremely questionable articles, some of which belonged to doug. I brought up his storied past and how much it coincided with his storied present, and it often presents itself now as a good chance for a joke with the editors. With that being said, my favorite auto journalist is Jack Baruth. He's one funny dude, and his personality comes across very similarly in person as well as text or video.

Baruth is a mysoginistic arse whose first article I really remember is where he credits his being able to avoid a pile-up on the highway to his racing experience and proper situational awareness. Of course, he wouldn't have needed that racing experience if he hadn't been travelling 120 mph on a crowded highway.

Guess which part of the article drew the most responses?

Still, he's an engaging writer, (and one of the bright lights left on the site since the recent editorial blow-up) and probably the best internet find for the major American print mags since Lieberman went to Motor Trend.

But would he dare badmouth the brown diesel manual wagon?

Yup. I'm not saying he's a likable person, but he comes across as genuine and knows how to make fun of himself. When you have that much of a crazy personality, being able to understand and joke around with the people who rightly criticize it makes an impact.

Oh, he's likeable enough. Like that crazy 🤬 of an uncle who tells stories that make you cringe... but who you still listen to, anyway. And very often, he puts out pieces with deep insight that make you really think.

And his lady friends do like him. Especially Vodka McBigBra (I gather she helped pick her alias!).

I met him when he was in Houston for a Lemons race that went very sour when EVERY single car that they tried race didn't work at all. Him, Derek, Bark, and one of his ladyfriends were very entertaining. I believe he referred to her as Curvy McLegalbriefs. Lawyer from Virginia.
