This was posted a little more than a week ago in my NSX-R @ El Capitan 200 miles topic:

Great report and good pictures VTiRoj! 3 laps winning margin, wow!
I believe you'd be more than capable of stripping that NSX back down to it's stock form, although unfortunately you can't reverse the weight reductions, and should be able to win for 200 A-spec points!
Alternatively buy another brand new '02 NSX-R and head back to El Capitan to claim those remaining points! It sure sounds as though you'd relish the challenge! Let us know if you decide to attempt it, as a stock 200 point win would make you eligible for the CLUB 200 list in this thread. 👍

So guess what this race report is about? Anyone want to guess? Anyone? :P

I guess no one guessed, so anyway, for my 5th race report posted here at GTP, I present…

NSX-R @ El Capitan 200 miles – 200pts

As you’ll soon see, the NSX-R I have brought along is totally standard, not even an oil change. All it has different from the showroom model is some very sweet Volk CE28N wrapped in some fresh Bridgestone Potenza rubber (S1 tyres ;)).

Car: Honda NSX Type R ‘02
BHP in garage: 295
BHP in value screen: 291
Weight: 1270kg
Modifications: S1 tyres, RAYS 024 wheels, Aids set to 0

At home in Beacon Hill, before I set off to El Capitan.

This will be my 3rd A-Spec race at El Capitan. My first was with my tuner NSX-R, with my second being a mildly tuned S2000 to claim the 200pts. However I didn’t post the S2000 in the end.

So, arriving at El Capitan, I see some familiar faces. Namely the same folks I whupped in the other NSX-R.

Pos. / Car
1 / Mercedes SL 65 AMG (R230) ‘04
2 / TVR Cerbera Speed Six ‘97
3 / TVR 350C ‘03
4 / Lotus Motor Sport Elise ‘99
5 / Shelby Series 1 Super Charged ‘03
6 / Honda NSX Type R ‘02

Seems they want a little payback after the first time.

I’ll summarise every 11 laps, making 6 equal sections of report. I think I owe some credit to Smallhorses since I’m pretty much copying his layout in a way. :D:tup:

I’m told by a marshal just as we line up at the line that this race is worth 200pts, well thanks, I would never of guessed. :dunce:

So, shall we begin?

Lap 1 – 11.
Thanks to the NSX-R, I managed to launch without any wheelspin, keeping me close to the Shelby into the first hairpin. I overtake it on the outside and begin a duel with the Cerbera. The duel lasts for about 5 seconds though, as I out-brake it and the 350C ahead of us at the right-handers leading into the left before the tunnel. Out-braking the SL 65 coming up to the uphill after the tunnel got me a nice 2nd position. So far so good then! But now, I had the Elise to deal with. Or do I? The NSX-R is so fast out the box I didn’t even realise I was first coming down the short downhill straight. Where was the Elise? A quick look behind answered my question. It was now on my bumper. Eeeeeep. Let the battle for midship supremacy commence! Despite the Elise’s unexplainable speed down the final straight, I still led the lead lap by 0’00.039. By lap 2 the gap was up to 0’01.812, and it would keep increasing until lap 11 where the gap had extended to a simply mind boggling 0’20.634! I thought this NSX-R was stock?! It’s going like a tuned S2000 right now! Okay, okay, the Elise pitted right at the end of lap 11. It was all over me like it was an 18 movie. My tyres at this point were just going yellow. Although my front right is taking a beating, it’s already orange!

Best lap for this section: 1’54.554

Lap 12-22.
The TVR 350C makes a pit stop on what would be it’s 11th lap. As does the SL 65. The Elise is 0’26.932 away from me coming onto lap 13, if the Elise gains a second or 2 on me soon I would need to pit to sort out my tyres. I only wasted 3 fuel “blips” on the HUD so far! The Cerbera pits on its 12th lap, leaving me and the Shelby without a pit stop so far. At the end of lap 13, I couldn’t bare the wear on the tyres and went to pit. I didn’t refuel as I still had 7 blips on the fuel guage. Fresh S1 tyres front and back ahoy! The Elise flies past as I exit the pits, pushing me to second. The battle begins again! I finish lap 14 0’01.227 behind the Elise. The Shelby pits for the first time about 10 seconds into my lap 15. I was less than half a second behind the Elise at the T1 marker, where shortly after in the same place I overtook it on lap 1, I overtook it again! Going sideways no less. :D The C32B (Honda fan boy talking here :P) was screaming at 9,000rpm during the pass, oh my oh my, my pants. At the end of the lap I was only 0’01.047 in front. By lap 22 the gap had closed down to 0’00.823, but the Elise has to pit soon. My tyres were lime green, so I was fine for another 3 or 4 laps.

No new best lap was achieved.

Lap 23 – 33.
Halfway round lap 23, I overtake the now last SL 65. It was 2nd last time I saw it! The SL 65 and Elise pit at the same time as I begin lap 24, great. Halfway around lap 24, both TVRs pit in. At this point I see the Elise passing T2… 0’37.752 away! I lap the Cerbera just before hitting the T1 of lap 25. I can clearly see the 350C ahead, but I wouldn’t be lapping it until after my 2nd pit stop. I pit at the end of lap 26, taking on new tyres and a full tank of petrol. The Cerbera unlapped itself whilst I was in the pits. I notice then the Else is 0’17.858 behind. Surely not? The next lap sees the Elise gaining 4 seconds on me with a 0’13.892. Hopefully that’s because I was on an out lap. The Shelby finally takes its second pit stop whilst I pass T1 of lap 29. The Elise is back to its usual pace after passing the same T1 marker 0’17.134 later. Lap 31 begins a mini-battle between me and the Cerbera, a battle for the Cerbera to stay on the lead lap! But despite what Blackpool’s finest has to offer, the battle only lasts 17 seconds, as the NSX-R proves to be more than a match for the Cerbera. Passing the T1 on lap 33 saw me engage battle with thee 350C. The Cerbera lost, so how will the 350C do? I had barely passed the T2 marker when my question was answered. Again Blackpool’s V8 sports car was out-done by Japan’s V6 supercar. The Elise had managed to hold a 0’16.313 gap behind me.

New best lap of 1’53.424.

Lap 34 – 44.
It was only until lap 35 I had something to write about, with the Elise pitting, sealing its 2nd place finish in the race. Can it really overcome a 40 second disadvantage? I have 4 more laps until my pit stop, so I’m not feeling any pressure from the little Lotus. The Mercedes pits about a minute later, whatever lap that thing is on. On lap 36 I notice the 350C and Cerbera pitting in, must have been the strain of our battles kicking in. :D After the T1 marker of lap 37 I put the SL 65 another lap down, with what I assume to be the Shelby just down the road. The Elise at this point was a embarrassing 0’52.204 down. Oh dear. I pitted in at the end of lap 39, my NSX-R needing a new set of tyres. The SL 65 took this opportunity to unlap itself. The race was quiet for a few laps, the Elise was now only 20 seconds away thanks to my pit stop, but it’s still quite a way away. Lap 43 the Shelby pitted in, giving me a chance to close the gap between us right up, so I could finally lap it. Lap 44 saw me lapping both the SL 65 and the Shelby. The SL 65 dropping a lap after T1, and the Shelby at T2. The Elise was 0’15.815 behind me.

No new best lap this sector.

Lap 45 – 55.
Lap 45 was generally quiet, with lap 46 telling me that the Elise has pitted. Lap 47 brings the SL 65 into the pit, putting it even further behind. The 350C and Cerbera do their usual dual pitting this lap also. As Lap 49 passes it seems that the Elise is over 52 seconds behind, whether or not I can lap it before the end remains a question to be answered, but for now I am in a comfortable winning position. The end of lap 52 saw me pitting for fuel and tyres, my plan was to last until the end, skipping my planned pit stop on lap 65, this would mean a drop of pace to keep my tyres from frying, and with the Elise only 0’20.997 away, I’d need to stay ahead at least until it’s next pit stop. *Replay finished recording 1:44’47.440* Lap 55 ends with the Elise being 0’10.989 seconds behind.

Lap 56 – 66.
The final 10 laps! No pit stops for me here, as mentioned earlier, I’m going to make the tyres last for 14 laps rather than the usual 13, bearing in mind my tyres were cooked on lap 12. Lap 57 brought tears of joy, as the Elise pitted. This would give me at least 30 seconds worth of a lead over it now, allowing me to slow down a bit and save my tyres for another 9 laps. Lap 58 confirms the Elise to be 0’42.652 away, with this good news I knew I had the win in the bag, only if I didn’t totally screw up, the Shelby pitted for it’s last time this lap too. Halfway round lap 58, I notice the SL 65 pitting again, is it on some quick wearing slow tyres? The 350C and Cerbera joins the SL 65 in the pits, probably for an early losers party. Lap 59 brings some laughter as I lap all 3 of the “losers party” in one swoop. :sly: 7 laps to go and my tyres are slightly lime… fingers crossed. Lap 60 saw the Elise fall back to 48 seconds behind. At the end of lap 61 the Elise was 0’53.046 away. On lap 62 I was surprised to see the Elise had fallen back more, down to 0’56.707. Looking at the map I see 2 dots quite close to each other, I can only assume the SL 65 is holding up the pool Elise! Lap 63 has the Elise gain back 2 seconds, 0’56.482, looking back at the map it seems the Elise has passed the SL 65 finally. My tyres are turning yellow, with 3 laps to go, could I make it? Lap 64, 2 laps to go. My front right tyre has turned orange with the extra work needed to turn the car, however the rest are yellow with the rear right turning orange. Lap 65, the Elise is 0’51.927 now. With my tyres well and truly roasted, I knew I had to baby the NSX-R home, but the question is, will the NSX-R keep from launching itself into the kitty litter on the last lap? The final lap was here, my tyres were on the brink of destruction. The NSX-R refused to turn, a combination of handbrake and throttle resulted in taking most corners sideways, and it was killing my lap times. The Elise was closing in, I knew that I could actually lose it here, but I wouldn’t give up, not with the NSX-R’s pride on the line. All 4 tyres screamed as they struggled to find any grip, smoke pouring off them as I dove deep into every corner, pushing the NSX-R as far as I could. The Elise was 40 seconds away, just beginning its last lap. With me just passing T1, it would be a fight with the tyres to the finish, with a high-pitched scream of the tyres, the NSX-R fought on. The Elise passed T1 35 seconds later, just as I passed T2. The NSX-R was worn, I was worn, but the finish was close. Using the dirt to help me get around on the inside of corners, I made it to the finishing straight. I shifted down, the tyres chirped as I pushed the throttle to the floor, taking the V6 all the way to 9,000rpm, the NSX-R screaming as the speedometer shot up, shifting up to 4th, the speed increased, this was it, victory! 110… 120… 130… FINISH!!!!!! The NSX-R, a stock NSX-R, won!

The prize of Cr.250,000 and a brand new Minolta was mine. Pulling up into the pits, I walked over to grab the results.

Pos. / Car / Time
1 / Honda NSX Type R ’02 / 2:10’36.839
2 / Lotus Motor Sport Elise ’99 / --‘--.---
3 / Shelby Series 1 Super Charged ’03 / --‘--.---
4 / TVR 350C ’03 / --‘--.---
5 / TVR Cerbera Speed Six ’97 / --‘--.---
6 / Mercedes SL 65 AMG (R230) ’04 / --‘--.---

Finally everyone else arrived. I expected to be mugged, but instead I get a cheer, even the Elise driver raised his hand in my honour. After the celebration, I hopped into the NSX-R. Heading for home I hoped the police didn’t pull me over for my tyres, although at least I get to drive home. The Elise had to be towed back since it was falling apart, both TVRs went home in bags, the Shelby was put onto a flatbed to be taken back to America, and the Mercedes didn’t actually make it out of the pit lane it was that slow.

Total mileage: 195.0 miles

So, 200pts are again, mine. So who do I see about Club200? :D

EYYYYAAAAHHHHH!!!!! I exited the race before saving the replay!!!!! Sorry guys, no pictures. :(:(:(:(

Nice read-up roj. 1st you do it with your TCv3 version, now a stockie.....what's next, getting a worked Jazz/Fit and doing it?? :P

PM sent to ya too dude. Something funny on my enduro.

Awesome with a capital AWE, VTiRoj!!! Great job! 👍

Told you it'd be a winner! ;)

As far as membership to CLUB 200 goes, you'll need to post your car stats in the Stock car race comparison/challenge thread, in the following format, also found in post #1 of that thread:

!
Not with just 195 miles on the clock at the end!

Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts to El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, California is about a 6,000 mile roundtrip in itself!

It's simple smallhorses. His NSX is a trailer queen!! :D There must be a beat up Civic with a trailer hitch somewhere on the circuit. :P

:lol::lol:

Civic = slave
NSX = royal highness being carried around

"Faster, Slave!!" (sound of whiplash)
- "uurrggghhh!!!" (sound of agony) :D

Hey, Roj, don't look now, but some clown parked your NSX-R on the curb! I hope you don't get a ticket for that one... :dunce:

Nice write-up! I figured it would be a non-challenge, even stock. The NSX's handle very well at this course in particular, and their lighter curb weight puts them ahead of the curve on tire life.

Yes, really. And yeah, also as a Type R fan, I'm glad I pulled off this win. 👍

Actually, I have a Dodge Ram hooked up to a trailer for that stuff, the Civic I first tried it with kinda erm... broke. Don't tow Skylines in a '83 Civic.

OMG yeah! That clown is going to get a harsh talking to for parking my NSX-R like that!

Yeah, 12 laps on S1 tyres is quite good, about the same as a mildly tuned S2000 actually. :sly:

Not sure if you're aware of this VTiRoj, but here's another great resource for race report writers:

AMG.'s Track Maps Thread

which contains links to maps of all GT4 tracks with the turns numbered / named which you're free to link into any of your reports so that you don't have to keep describing things like e.g. "the turn that comes 3 after the tight hairpin and 2 before the tunnel"

It's what I've been using for my latest reports at Grand Valley & Laguna Seca. :D
