Nvidia driver or hard drive issue

Evening all,

So I had been running Nvidia driver version 301.42 and just tried to update to 306.97. My default download folder is on my D: drive. The install seemed to go well but at the last second it came up with an error saying various things failed to install... I've never seen that before so I was a little concerned. I tried to re-run the installer after accepting the error message and I got an error message saying the 'extended attributes are inconsistent', I Googled that and some sites said that's a sign of a drive going odd, but this drive is maybe two months old! I know it could be faulty but... Well, let's not go there. I tried opening it again and it said something about a file system error, but I didn't make a note of the error message.

I rebooted and noticed the Nvidia control panel works again (it wouldn't open between the install failure and rebooting) and in the control panel it says I'm using 306.97, which is the version I was updating too. Running chkdsk doesn't seem to want to do anything on my D: drive, when I try to run it it says it either needs to force a dismount or cancel but if I force dismount it, it's still there and chkdsk doesn't do anything. I can now re-run the installer, too.

So my questions are:
- Any idea what caused this?
- Should I be worried about the drivers having not installed properly or was it a false error message, since Nvidia Control Panel seems happy now?
- Should I be worried about my hard drive?

Cheers!

Uninstall every thing from control panel>programs and features involving nVidia.

nVidia updater, Physx, 3D vision, drivers, ect.

The install the latest drivers by selecting custom, then unchecking 3D vision(useless unless you use it) and select clean install then install.

Just like Grayfox said, uninstall and then reinstall drivers.

Can you also check if PhysX System software was updated? and what version you have. I don't think its related to the issues that you are having, but that was the only Nvidia driver that was not updated on my system.

thanks

You can also do a clean install in the install process, it will delete all the last driver files.

What caused this?
No idea, could have been a hickup in the reading, sectors, or file index or something completely other...

If it works now, all dandy, just keep an eye on your drive and don't copy over essential data for a few weeks till it's clear if it was a hickup or a more serious fault
