Racing is defined as a competition of speed.
Racing is about winning, to compete to be the fastest.. I raced IRL to win, I race online to win. Most often I can't win, as there are better, more skilled (and more consistent) drivers out there. That being the case, second option is to race to the best of my ability and let the results fall where they may. A good race is door to door, clean lines AND good lap times. As is always the case with racing, there are differing skill levels, and while it may be true that some racers concentrate on super fast lap times, other do too, and therefore the bar gets raised. These 'superfast' racers compete against each other in a race, and the drivers of lesser speed also compete amongst themselves in the competition of speed, to see who makes the finish line first. If you are not in the game to improve your performance (your laptime), your not racing, you're on a Sunday drive.
A clean consistent lap time is what we all aim to achieve, we do the best we can to compete against others. I believe it diminishes the art of racing to separate the superfast drivers from the rest, it gives the impression that you think they are 'too' good.
Racing is about being humble. Very (very) few drivers can say they are the best but no matter how good you are, there is someone of equivalent skill and these are the people you race against to win against them.
Superfast drivers also have other superfast drivers to compete against. Why should their ethics in racing be any different than yours? They still want to compete against drivers of equivalent skill and win against them, using clean, consistent laptimes, but as is the nature of anything involving skill, its lonely at the top. I'm very very sure they guys at the top appreciate a close clean race as much as anyone, perhaps even more, as it probably happens less often that it does with us others down in the fat part of the pyramid.
Racing is about winning, but for the vast majority its about losing. Even though I lose, I still aim to win and to improve my performance to do just that. Thats why i race, and call myself a racer.
