Rule in my house is that nobody is allowed to think about Christmas until it's been my birthday, which is November 25th. So on the 26th, I'll get my Crimbo avatar out.
It is rather early for Christmas avatars, it's not even December yet.
However, it is the right time for gift preparing, because the earlier you do it, the quicker you get out of the way, and the easier it is to find gifts. If you wait right until December, it gets more difficult, the stores are harder to navigate due to all the other people gift purchasing as well, and there is less available and more gimmicky crap that no one really wants... And to roundup, more Christmas music is being played meaning that you're more likely to get Whammed...

I've always thought Christmas season starts when Thanksgiving is over in the US. Of course, everyone, especially retailers, have been pushing that earlier and earlier each year.

I threw my fist up and shouted YES when GTP put up its decorations! It's pretty bad when GTP putting up its decorations is more interesting than when they get put up in my house (no one can really be bothered, so it's sort of boring).
