Other racing games on the PS3

GT5 is only the only driving simulator game I've played on the PS3. Looking for input on other driving/racing simulator games on the PS3 that might be worthy of a look with features and fun factor comparable to GT5.

Thanks !

(not interested in the crash/destruction genre, e.g., GTA)

To be honest, this is the only good worthy simulator game that you can play in Ps3 but I was thinking of buying Dirt 3 but online was deserted so I'm just going to have to wait till GT6 comes out.

Believe there is a forum dedicated to other racing games here on GTP that you could check for more information.

That said I've found some good things about both Shift 2 and Grid that make them an entertaining break from GT5.

Supercar challenge is a gem, graphics are a bit outdated but the physics are quite good.

I liked Grid on the PC but no one was playing online, maybe a demolition derby or a few people hosting empty lounges. That was before I bought the PS3 and GT5 prologue. That is when the online bug really got me.

I rented Grid for the PS3 and it was no better online than the PC version. I always ended up back with GT5P.

I was excited when NFS Shift came out and I bought it right away, but again the online community was very disappointing and to add insult to injury - you got points for crashing other people?

GT is and has always been the best racing game for the Playstation. I just hope that will continue to be the case.

I believe they have closed the Grid online servers and I've never run Shift 2 online so can't say how that is.
The AI for both though is much better than the moving chicanes in GT5, especially Grid's. Career mode and car classification (like PP only more accurate) is better in Shift 2. Also Shift 2 has the livery editor that can be fun to muck about with. Both games also offer some good tracks you don't see in GT5 and some other types of competition besides circuit racing. Touge in Grid can be very fun with challenging courses.

That said GT5 still has better driving physics than either of them and even with all its duplicates you have a much wider variety of cars to choose from.

Well, I bought shift 2 few weeks ago because my friend said that online was packed and when I got it there was nobody except like 2-5 people. I regret buying the game because the physics of the car its 🤬 up. I haven't played it since so it's collecting dust and rotting. But I do appreciate them for trying something new.

I heard some good things about Project CARS...
But I never played it, so can't say how it plays.
Anyone experience with that game?

Shift 2 could be a great alternative for GT5.
However, due to its bad handling with a wheel on PS3 it is definately not.

I don't have a wheel so can't say how any of the games play with one.
I do have my DS3 set up as close to the same on all three games as possible though so I don't get confused switching between them.

I don't know how it handles with a DS3.
Will try, because this game is too much fun not to play anymore ;)
It does have a different feel to the handling than GT5 does which will take a little getting used to. However the fresh tracks and aggressive AI make it interesting. Also like the classification system which makes you think about how you want to go about upgrading the cars.

I've tried a few others but none have the relatively steady frame rate as GT5 offline or it's attempt at photo realism.

For racing though I'd highly recommend F1 2012. Fun and interesting career mode and a nice layout. Different difficulty levels, nice graphics. Sometimes I've had some frame rate issues but that's been the only downside. Updates have fixed the steering issues on PS3.

I've played Test Drive-Ferrari Racing Legends but not gotten too far into it's career. Cars look good but backgrounds are second rate. It got horrible reviews but some guys on GTP swear by it. I've enjoyed what I tried. Decent physics and very good FFB once you get a good set up.

Only other one I tried was Shift 2. Great track list and cars. I never could get a steering feel that felt right after trying every set up I found posted. Finally gave up in frustration.

Aside from this...

...there are many other good racing games for the PS3, but my experience is that everything else (not GT5) is too "arcadey" for my taste. I've played Shift and Grid and a few others, and the cars have a tendency to automatically drift which seems wrong. The handling and overall physics of the cars, it's just too artificial. Yes I know these are video games and they are inherently artificial, and my comments are not to be taken that these other games are not fun, many of them are a real kick in the pants.

If you are having fun with your games then you are succeeding in this hobby, regardless of what anyone else says.

EDIT: I just read this post and I sound like such a GT5 fanboy! My gaming is 50% GT5, 50% shooter/adventure games like Orange Box, Uncharted, Doom 3 BFG, Resistance 1-2-3, etc.

As in a driving simulation game. No close as your are going to get to GT5 i would say grid.

I know what you mean - a frustrating game where going to too fast means the steering becomes ultra sensitive - though it does make the downhill left-right-left of Fruchsrohre (foxhole) totally terrifying!!!:nervous: I found a great set up for the DS3 and worked out the key parts to tune - and that finally made the game playable.

Project Cars if you are talking about the PC game I certainly have played it. They have renamed the game redline something close to that I haven't played it for along time but I had couple of fast cars there

Shift 2 is number 1 on my list besides GT5. Closer to realism than other racing games. I think it has good tuning, upgrading, and the customization is more detailed than gt5. Pretty cheap to buy nowadays.

The problem is that no one I mean no one plays online with it

Um no, they haven't renamed Project CARS, it's still the same.

F1 2012... Before you laugh and say it's not a sim, it is very good. Good graphics, realistic physics (no iRacing but still) and overall it simulates racing better than GT5. (strategy, damage, reliability issues, AI (much, much better)) I really recommend to try that game out, it has improved my driving style and consistency by atleast 10%. 👍

Formula 1 Championship Edition is better than any F1 by Codemasters on PS3. Graphic detail is better, frame rate is better, anti aliasing is better, AI is better. You need to push to the limit to win races. It's very cheap now, a must have for every PS3 racing gamer.

Oh and Dirt 2 absolutely. Awesome game.

I'd say it's about the same as Codies games but considering it's older, it is better as well.
F1 CE was made by Studio Liverpool, the same people of Wipeout HD which is jawdropping. They booth use PS3 to its max capabilities.

I'm not happy at all with F1 graphic by Codemasters. On pc is awesome but on console, way too much aliasing and frame rate is not good. I stopped playing when I bought F1 CE.

By Codemasters I reccomend Dirt 2 You can buy it used. There is no online pass. Graphic is spectacular, no frame drops and gameplay is solid.

  • Supercar Challenge / Absolute Supercars.
  • Need For Speed Shift,
  • WRC 3
  • Ferrari Racing Legends
Those are other racing games worth look at it.

Now I feel very foolish...:) I have been mixing up F1 CE with the F1 2010 game all along. I remember the F1 CE trailers and when I got to the demo for F1 2010 I was left wondering where half of the effects and camera angles had disappeared to - plus the graphics didn't look as rounded.

Appreciate the info therefore HKS - I will be looking into getting this forthwith.

And yes, D2 is stupendous.
