OutRun Set to Get Michael Bay-Directed Movie

Today in headlines we never even imagined the possibility of conceiving of writing, classic arcade racing game OutRun is, according to reports from Hollywood, on its way to the silver screen in a flick to be directed by Transformers helmsman Michael Bay...

It better be unapologetically 80s. I want synthwave music, big hair, and lots of neon.
They should hire Nicolas Winding Refn for that, it would likely turn out to be pretty cool. On the other hand I doubt he‘d be interested in directing an Outrun movie.

My favourite game from the series was Outrun Europa...

It did have somewhat of a 'plot', with a little exposition after each stage. The lead character's car is stolen, with an important briefcase in it (IIRC), and he has to chase the thieves across Europe to get it back.

I'd actually be alright with a film of that. Just the one though... no sequels. Absolutely. No. Sequels. You hear me Bay?

All jokes aside I feel like this has potential. I, for one, feel we need more car chase movies. I doubt Michael Bay actually gets creative but there room for some cool stuff. Like make the entire movie one, non-stop, chase scene. Like Fury Road but...actually.

Played OutRun on the SEGA master system & arcades as a kid! Loved it. I want this movie to go one of two directions:

1) a Crank-inspired 80s adrenaline-fest, all scenes must have the main guy (Outrun Dude) driving Ferrari as fast as possible. Music from the games must be featured. OutRun2 style locations such as Giant Statues and Sunny Beach can figure prominently. Car crash should have Ferrari flip multiple time, occupants ejected and then get back into car like nothing happened. First person radio channel switching should be a thing. At the end OutRun Dude needs to power slide into a crowd of people, not hitting anyone, who then cheer for him enthusiastically. OutRun Gal maybe gets into the rivals car at some point. Turbo button? Yes. Need to choose between two branching paths every 2 minutes. But is there really a choice or is choice just an illusion!? Closing scene features sunset beach similar to high score screen.

2) Grand Turismo the movie, where a young chap gets into competitive OutRun scene, works his way up, and then competes in real Ferrari driving competitions Ah… maybe not. 😂

There's already a game that answers the question of what OutRun would be like if Michael Bay made it in his Transformers years: Need For Speed: The Run.

It had human characters and a... plot... I think. I only remember being confused by the justification for the cross-country race and racing in the subways of NYC in the finale, where the trains run at 350km/h, apparently.

I'm at a loss as to who actually wanted this (Seriously, who the hell asked for this?). Unless Sega is actually overseeing things in the same Fashion they did for Sonic (Or Nintendo did for the Super Mario Movie), I'm not quite sold on it regardless of what attractive actress is onboard. Micheal Bay's presence does NOT help considering how he wasn't exactly familiar with Transformers (Which also featured an actress to distract the audience) so call me cynical but I'm not expecting him to be any less out of touch.

Oh and you know the tired tropes that you usually expect in a Bay movie are gonna be there too (Explosions, slow mo, stereotypes, that damn guy that was Sam Witwicky's Father and was ALSO in that awful 90s American Godzilla Movie, etc).

Big question: Will Ferrari allow Bae to use one of their cars? I think Bay only had one Ferrari in his Transformers movies.

As long as the studio foots the bill, I don't see why not. Ferrari's only concern with media is anything that could paint them in a negative light. Outside of Ferrari Challenge, OutRun is the one series where they are exclusively catered to as the Heroes.
