Sorry if this isn't thread worthy, but I didn't know where exactly to put this.
I was just watching some show on Velocity, and one of those self-promoting bump ads came on for the network. It had a bunch of computer graphics and effects that led up to showcase the Velocity logo, but I noticed the outline of a circuit kept being shown. Not just any circuit, but I'm pretty sure it was none other than High Speed Ring. I couldn't find the clip online.
I guess my question is if there could be any permission or copyright issues that could come up with Polyphony or Sony. Is this something noteworthy, or is it no big deal? Most of the time this copyright crap really confuses me.

Racetrack design is a form of architecture and it's governed by the same intellectual property laws. That means that you can't design or build a track identical or very similar to High Speed Ring without permission from the copyright owner.*

In this case however Velocity didn't build a racetrack in the shape of High Speed Ring, they just showed a circuit outline. So unless the shape itself is protected as a trademark, then there's no issues.

And wether it's a big deal or not depends on the copyright owner. I don't think Sony would care about a hobby artist creating a miniature High Speed Ring replica for R/C cars in their own backyard for non-profit purposes. But Turn 10 creating a High Speed Ring replica for Forza 7 would probably not be okay.

Edit: *To be protected by copyright, a work needs to be original enough. You can't just draw a line on a paper and say that it's copyrighted. It's possible that High Speed Ring isn't original enough to be copyrighted.

High Speed Ring was inspired by the track in Namco's Pole Position, which was itself inspired by Fuji, so something that looks like the outline of HSR may not be.

Is that true? I had no idea that was the inspiration, really cool!

The pinnacle of racing games of it's time!:)👍

If im not mistaken the Apricot Hill were inspired by Suzuka too with its S Chichanes, familiarly shaped hairpin, etc.

How I'd love a Forza version of Deep Forest. That's been my favourite GT track other than Grindelwald.

So, I wasn't the only one that saw that

Imo the High Speed Ring looks more like it was inspired by the GT logo itself. :D

Lol the basic shape is there, @TeamCZRRacing. Use a photoeditor and place the two on top of eachother and make the top pic transparent. It might not be a perfect match but you can see the similarities
