Kia ora guys.

So I've been setting up cars to taking some photos and I painted my RX-7 in a rather nice colour called "Supreme Blue mica"

It was the first colour that struck me as interesting so I stuck it on and took it to Kyoto to get a better look at it.

It was then that I came across something rather peculiar and well.. take a look for yourself

(this one you might need to open it up for the larger image to see it, these pictures are purely to demonstrate the effect I'm describing so apologies if they're rather bad, I didn't put much effort into taking them)

It looks like my incompetent uncle was given the spray gun..
I doubt there's a fix beyond picking another colour, so my question is; has anybody else come across this effect where the paint looks like it was applied by a beginner painter?

Cue people looking for all the differnt car/colour combinations that this happens on. Lol.

Interesting find there husky.

It seems to me that it's just the reflection of particles (IIRC, blossom from the trees) in Kyoto. Have you been able to replicate this in other photo locations?

There weren't any Cherry Blossom Trees around the car (though there are a few in the background, there aren't any nearby) so I'm not sure that's a problem

These are in Kyoko (day)

It was quite common for Japanese car manufacturers to paint the lower portion of the body with chip resistant paint as an undercoat and that's what you are seeing in the photo. It's not a bad paint job it's the effect of the slightly rubberised paint that when applied gives a highly exaggerated orange peel effect.

Well now that certainly is interesting, that would explain why it's only on the lower half of the body.

Peculiar since I've painted many of my cars with Japanese paint but this is the first time I've seen such an effect.

Think that's part of it, might also suggest that it's partly due to the type of paint used. The Mica paints have small flecks of metal/crystals in them that catch and reflect the light in dIfferent ways that can cause the fInIsh to take on a rIppled look dependIng on the angles of the surface relatIve to the lIght source/s.

It was really common for a bitumen content paint to be painted on before the top coat. I believe this was primarily because the quality of the steel they used was really poor/thin and it was an attempt to arrest the rapid decay (rust) of these early cars.

I don't think I have seen this on any other cars in the GT5 garage though

Roughly 35 percent of my cars that I've resprayed are in Mica and this is my first time coming across something like this, but it could be something to do with it, this is my first time using this particular colour of Mica

Hey if it's JDM I'm keeping it around =P even if it's not a glitch as I had first thought I'm keeping it ^_^
Especially since this effect seems to be at least semi rare.

Interesting read though, I adore learning new things about cars even if it's outdated practices.

Recognized the "different surface" effect (rough) as well on a BMW on the lower parts of the body, mostly recognizable at the rear end.

Sorry Desperado but it has nothing to do with the Mica fleck in the paint. I know I am right with this, it is absolutely the bitumen undercoat the Japanese used on these early cars.

It's not the Mica paint :)

I figured as much, it's still really interesting that PD would model something like this. More interesting is the fact I've never come across it until now even with my massive library of Japanese paint chips and constant colour swaps of my main cars.

Which paint chip was this with?

Looking closer at the last photo posted yeah the surface texture under the paint is the cause of the effect in this case. May be that the color used just makes it more apparent in this case than with another color/type of paint. The Airwhiler gate photos also clearly show the different surface textures between the upper body and the running boards along the bottom.

Very strange find. I haven't noticed this glitch on any of my own cars, but I found a paint glitch as well. It allows you to keep black stripes on a Ford GT '06 while painting the rest of the car any color.

1. Buy a Ford GT '06 from the premium dealership in Mark IV Red (No Stripe)
2. Go to GT AUTO and paint the car in white
3. If black stripes haven't appeared on this car, then you might have done something wrong
4. When you get the black stripes, you can change the car's color now. I normally paint it back to Mk IV Red.

Mystery solved
I bought another Efini from the dealership and the effect is still there, as Desperado says the paint I chose just makes it stick out a hell of a lot more, I had to really zoom in on this one and focus on it to get the effect to show up

*sadface*

Hey that's really nifty! I'm so going to freak out my friend who loves GTs because I've never seen him exploit this little trick.

Haha! Awesome, man! Yeah, GT's are amazing pieces of machinery. Incredible looks and performance.

It certainly is, I'm not having any luck so far with tuning it due to its driving feel being so vastly different to the lighter and more nimble cars I normally work with, but it's only been half an hour so y'know.

Anyway this is off-topic =P

This is nothing new as I have heard of this and even done it myself some time ago.

Does this work on any other cars ?

I believe so but not entirely sure. There was a thread dedicated to this very subject some time ago tho. If you search, you might be able to find it to get an answer to your question.

Ford GT 06 looks good in silver chrome and black stripe :) thanks for the info.

Many thanks CargoRat will search when later tonight.

Good luck tuning it!

Well I found it out myself. Calm down.

Don't tell me to calm down dude. Who do you think you are? There was absolutely nothing upity about my post. I simply stated that it was nothing new. I think you are the one that needs to calm down. Don't be mad just because you thought you were the first to discover something that tuned out to be old news. And yes, now I'm being upity. I don't like being told to calm down when there was no need for you to even go there.

Maybe you should calm down now...

If GT5 is accurate this effect should be seen on the premium NA MX5 as well.

I didn't knew that..or can't remember so thanks for new info (for me) or reminder
