I'm starting to have doubts if we'll ever be able to enjoy the kind of close racing that's already available now via LAN mode.
Just look at the round-trip time of packets and you know the answer:

My wireless router: 2ms
Internet: anything from 50ms (close-by) to multiple 100ms (intercontinental)

Part of the limit is the speed of light.

You're on! 👍

Better you than your son... ;)

Cool! 👍

In F1:CE have no doubt about it. I told him yesterday that my best lap time at Interlagos was 1.13,7xx and this morning he told me he had done a 1.12,0xx ... where's the respect gone when kids beat their own fathers' laptimes ...

Ahh, so you are a competitive dad? Mario and his kids:

The key to having good close racing is for the racers to be experienced in the car & track & also pretty close in ability. I had many good races online in FC, especially with RS & ENERGIYA, even with the lag issues. It also helps if you're racing one-on-one - then you can wait for a safe moment to pass, because getting stuck behind doesn't mean someone in front is having an opportunity to pull further ahead.

Oh please. Where's the barf emoticon. There we go.

Yes, it's a shame that it seems to be a disappearing feature. But as Bullie rightfully points out, few people probably ever really use it. And as developers know this, it's one of those features that they probably figure can be cut and few, if any, will miss it. I have to admit, I've only used the feature myself twice. Ever. And both times with Biggles
.

Personally I've used it 4 times 3 of them in the PS2(not even LAN actually, but the old link cable) with TOCA III

Anyway, it was most unfortunate that I HAD to leave during a online event I had organized myself. It's very embarrassing, like inviting your friends to your home and after they arrived telling them all "sorry, I must go, help yourselves, drinks are in the fridge and food is on the table." It just shouldn't be done. :indiff:

We forgive You:lol:, but only if You support the beverage for the upcoming event:sly:

So, sorry again guys, hope that from all of this you had at least some fun. One thing is certain, you never had an event as crazy as this before in your gaming lives! :dopey:
Certainally the longest:scared:

OMG! Is this really about that time I beat you round Mugello with my G25 & 19" TV perched on a wobbly table in your basement? I'm sorry, OK? but it's time to move on ...

(BTW: you'll find playing a musical instrument a great way to remove tension & stress 👍 )

You forgot to mention the wobbly chair he allowed you to use

We won't even mention the 300w light I had shining directly in his eyes. But look, the man was a guest in my home. Would it really have been fair or respectful to give him a savage beating? Especially when he fought off savage chickens to reach me?

Anyway, this is all completely besides the point. And kidding aside, Biggles, knows he's always welcome back and I'm always happy for a little one-on-one LAN play whenever he's in the NY area. But in regards to his preposterous comments, are we're talking about racing or high noon at the O.K. Corral? I'm happy to go a little one-on-one if he shows up. But in general terms, and especially on-line, I say, the more the merrier. When was the last time you went to a circuit to watch only TWO cars slug it out? NO! That's not how it's done.

And what's this? You can take your time passing because you don't have to worry about other cars pulling away. GAK! Oh, I feel it, it's coming, there it is again. There's enough baloney there to feed an entire school of 6 year olds.

P.S. If you start playing that Mandolin next time you're over, you're going to see a lot of stress relief. ;)

I actually agree with Biggles in here. Not saying that 1vs1 racing is better, but I feel much more comfortable when I'm fighting 1vs1 for the first place, instead of let's say 3rd place. I don't have to rush with the overtake attempt, because there is no one running away in front. I can try to build the moment for several laps if needed, I definitely prefer that over the "dang, I have to overtake asap so that the driver in front won't get too far".

I should just let him relish the moment. It's not very often when somebody either does, or even admits to it. 👍 (;))

Well, let's face it, who doesn't?

Yeah but guys, this is all part of racing. Granted, few games (online) really give you the opportunity to run a proper qualifying and establish a grid where, in theory anyway, the faster guys are in front, as would normally be the case in the real world. And I can understand, under a random grid and a race of just 5-7 laps how it's a bit frustrating to start the race in last place while everybody else goes storming off and you're struggling to overtake another car and do it cleanly. Of that I don't disagree. But I still think, at least with longer races, a full grid adds an element of excitement, realism and challenge that's missing with a small grid of just 2-4 cars. Even if the drivers are very evenly matched, if one person has a slight off, that 5-6 seconds may be impossible to make up and you spend the rest of the race in a futile effort to catch up anyway. At which point it become more a TT than an actual race.

I do understand what you guys are saying. But given a choice between small and large grid, I'll take the large grid as the positives out weigh the negatives.

Well, that's true.. :D Though the point was that when fighting for the first place you usually don't have to rush it.

Now I agree with you and Biggles! I also prefer a full grid over a small one, because in the full grid you'll have more possibilities to get those great 1vs1 battles even with different drivers during the race :dopey:

I'm just afraid that when there's more cars I can't keep the track of every cars positions and it will end to a crash fest. When there is only 1vs1, it's easier to keep the track of the situation. Maybe that's why I'm not arrogant enough in situations with more than 2 drivers and I come out as the loser. But as you said, it's all part of racing :)
