Honestly, if no putting greens are available play at a time when no one else will be on course and practice on one hole and such.

Had my best round ever yesterday. It was really hot yesterday (47C with humidity), so we rented carts, and got out to the course. I shot a 44 on the front nine, improving by 5 over the day before. On the back nine, I shot a 39, it was a really great round for me (83 overall). The course is short (par 66), but somewhat challenging, and for the first time I've ever broken 90, I feel like I did it pretty damn significantly.

Nice score, 17 over I presumed.

My handicap is going absolutely upwards, winter is a really hard time to improve your game.

9 Fairways, 12 GiR's, and a disappointing 36 putts for a 78 (+6) today. Course 5886m

Finished top qualifier in my grade (10---15 handicap) for strokeplay section of club champs with 79 & 78.

Matchplay to come...

Nice! guess you must be close to single figures :)

Is matchplay playing off scratch or with handicaps included?

Close to single figures? More like getting back to them... I was "sub 10" course handicap, high 8.x index a wee while back, but unfortunately badly twisted left ankle early January playing summer football (soccer). Didn't get physio as it didn't stop me playing or working, but doctor sent me in May...

I since started playing a little better (during the slump I struggled off the tee) and not hitting into so much trouble. I've also bit the bullet and replaced my shaft in my TaylorMade R9 SuperTri. Did have a Motore 60gm 'S' shaft but now have replaced it with a 'R' shaft. As when I started to hit well, it got quicker and quicker... Now with the change I hope to control the speed/rythym of my back-swing better & nearly more importantly allow it to finish!

So here's hoping it continues to improve driving accuracy, consistency and with the swing 'syncing' it probably means more distance ironically. Once the back swing is sorted I might plug the 'S' back in ;) Don't know if I can start to challenge my low index of 7.3 until spring/summer but wouldn't mind challenging par of 72, as 75 is currently my best (with two 3-putts in the last 3 holes!).

The qualifying & matchplay is all off the stick. 18 holes for all until 36 hole final. Learnt today that winning strokeplay champ get a name on one of the club trophies... but I would prefer my second club Intermediate championship to complement my 2008 one... 2009 I couldn't defend, I was senior with about 8.2 index...

One game at a time though...

Ok guys i need your opinion on Irons, since I'm going to really buckle down and play I need clubs, I've decided to buy my irons first and I have my eye on a set of TaylorMade Burner 2.0's. I'm going for custom fitting on Sunday hopefully. Any tips or opinions?

Next will be Fairway Woods 3 & 5 should about do it, then driver and putter maybe (already got one but don't really like it).

My only advice for you is to try them out on a demo day and then you could probably decide if you want them from there.

I'm going to American Golf to be fitted, and a couple of weeks ago they had a set of the Burner 2.0's for demo. I can't wait. I've been looking at the Taylormade R11 Driver and Fairway woods too.

[Edit]

Just got back from the Golf store and got myself some Irons. I've not got the Burner 2.0's instead I've gone for some Callaway Diablo Edge, they felt much bette than the Taylormade's on impact. They need lengthening a little 1 inch and the grips need to be a bit thicker for my hands but the felt great and in about 30 balls hit with them only one miss hit.

Nice choice! I'm using Taylornade r7 CGB MAX irons, they're engineered to be the easiest irons possible :P

EDIT: Funny, last year I was struggling with a bad slice, and now it's a hook that's killing me. Especially on a long par 5, if I take out the driver, sometimes I hook it into the trees.

I used to have just a terrible slice with my driver and about the most I could get a drive out there (when straight) was 230-240 yds. My uncle just gave me his old R5 driver and I can't slice it, even when I try and do occasionally hook it but for the most part I'm hitting 260-275 drives quite straight which I'm quite happy with.

When I started hitting a couple of weeks ago I had a terrible slice to pretty much every shot. Yesterday after going to the store I went out for a general hit about and im not slicing anymore but ive developed a small hook or im straight. Golf is a funny old game.

I'm not playing the best but I rather hit small draws now.

I normally hit a slice when my setup and aiming to the target is wrong.

I suffer from a terrible slice with the driver at the moment. For my B'day in august im going to get a new driver to straighten out the problem. Anyone know any good driver's.

I've got my heart set on a Taylormade Burner Superfast 2.0 (yes, the white one:)). Looks gorgeous by the ball.
I also like the Cobra s3 driver, but I will buy the one that works best for me after a demo.

The Taylor made is supposed to be very forgiving and also its adjustable to help with your slice, I also agree it looks lovely in white I even like the 3 and 5woods too. The Burner and the Diablo are two of the drivers I have been looking at.

The Taylormade I think you are thinking of is the R11, the burners "brother" if you like. I would like that one, but all of the adjustments would hardly be used by me, and I cant see a justifiable reason to pay an extra 80 quid for something that I will not touch.
The only thing putting me off the burner is the 1" longer shaft, which means I may be sacrificing control, which defeats the point of me buying a new driver.
The diablo also looks like a driver that I may try, because it's reasonably priced considering it has been made out of a new material. We'll see in a month:)

If you can find an R9 in a store right now you can likely get a great deal because the R11 is out and it's still a great driver.

At my local American golf there is a pre-owned R9 in the store, but no new ones. It is slightly scuffed on the crown, which is preventing me from buying such a club.

Dang. Was in a store the other day with a lefty R9 brand new (I am a lefty in golf) but I was just given an R5 in great shape and I'm hitting it a mile so I passed. Plus I don't have the money after nutting textbooks for school this fall...

Going out today, tee time in a couple hours.

Yes you are rite, it was the R11 that I was thinking of. If you go for the Taylor Made why don't you go for custom fitting or if the fitting length of the shaft is still too long why not get a custom shaft? Taylor Made apparently tend to be a bit longer in their shafts than some other brands.

I got the R5 XL Plus, wonderful driver and I hit the ball so nicely, but I have too much loft on it with 10.5

If you have a slice on your driver the only thing I can suggest is to try out a draw set driver, I have on at the moment and really only hit straight or draw them.

Just got home from my round. Shot an honest 100. First full round this year though so I'm pleased with it, putting killed me today along with the 3 balls I put in the water. Was a tougher course and made some stupid decisions.

Hitting my R5 brilliantly though. Twice today touching 275 and one 260 uphill. Par on two par 5s and a bogey on another as a result. 6 iron was doing wonders for me too.

Stavingo
I need to focus on hitting the ball harder off the tee, I can only hit it about 220 or so.

I used to hit in the 220-240 range but my new (to me) driver and me finally filling out after being healthy for the first time ever has hugely increased my distance. I was hitting 6 iron shots just under 200 today from the fairway and my driver into the 260-275 now.

I found an upgrade from a 15 year old piece of garbage driver to a Callaway FT-IQ has added lots of yardage for me. I hit my old driver maybe 200 yards, and that was if I really killed it. Now, with a new driver and another year of muscle growth and development (I'm by no means fit, but I'm much stronger now, particularly in the legs and core).

I now drive about 240-250 yards if I get a hold of it, my 3 wood is good for 220-230, my 3 hybrid is good for about 205-215, I'm by no means a long hitter now, but with a good drive I can reach most par 5's in 2 (the actually landing the ball on the green stuff is tough :P). Last year, my distance (or lack thereof) was really hurting my game, but now it's less of a factor, and I can focus on control (and my lack thereof :P) to lower my scores even more.

Right now, my biggest issue is I still tend to duff a few iron shots a round, I'll take a huge chunk of dirt, and move the ball forward 10 yards. I need to get that sorted out.

My problem too. I look back at my 100 round and think well god I left about 5 putts within an inch, I smacked 3 in the water and I duffed about 5 or 6 shots which just there would have me breaking 90. Amazing how quick a score adds up.

With my irons I used to have a bad slice, but I adjusted my grip so my left hand is rotated slightly more to the right and it seems to have reduced the slice a considerable amount. Haven't tried this with the driver yet which is the club im getting on worst with.
Just a quick question, I have a driver wich is probably worth 20-30 pounds new, can a driver that is worth 150+ pounds really make any difference accuracy-wise?

First time I've stumbled across this thread.

Stick with the R5 mate. It will serve you well, if you stumble across any R5 fairway woods second hand in good knick buy them. For their time and still now are excellent fairway woods.

I need to focus on hitting the ball harder off the tee, I can only hit it about 220 or so.

There's nothing wrong with hitting it 220, it's where you hit it. If every time you stepped up onto the tee and could land if excactly where you wanted to within 220 you would be a very good golfer.

Sure more distance is nice but it's no good in the trees. I've played with a guy who can hit it about 300, the problem for him is the first 250 is straight and the next 50 is about 45 degrees to the right. I beat him every time when it comes to adding up the scores.

My problem too. I look back at my 100 round and think well god I left about 5 putts within an inch, I smacked 3 in the water and I duffed about 5 or 6 shots which just there would have me breaking 90. Amazing how quick a score adds up.

Practice practice practice mate.
It's the only way to improve.
Just remember you drive for show and putt for dough.
The best guys I play with (off between 1 and 4) are dynamite around the greens. They still get in trouble but nearly always get up and down in two shots. They are brilliant with chips and their putter and pretty much more often than not get it close enough for only one put. It's very rare that they will three put during a round.

With my irons I used to have a bad slice, but I adjusted my grip so my left hand is rotated slightly more to the right and it seems to have reduced the slice a considerable amount. Haven't tried this with the driver yet which is the club im getting on worst with.

Maybe a little bit mate but it wont make you hit it straight every time. That comes down to your swing.
Don't fall into the trap of having to have the best gear. Tiger Woods in his heyday would have been able to hit a broomstick long and straight.

@ Sprite.

Nice to hear you went with the steel shafts for your new irons.
