Thanks for all the kind words about my shot, I put a lot of work into it and am very happy with the result
fwiw this is how it came about, it was the fourth car / travel location combo I tried. The others were a
Red Monaro in the bamboo (rejected as being too similar to scaff's, plus I didn't like the wheels), a
Purple Commodore (too much bling), a
Shelby Mustang in the fish market (much better but it just didn't stand out enough) and finally the Viper shot, which was inspired by the Mustang one.
By this time I knew exactly what sort of shot I wanted, a long focal length with the car on a deep angle to get both wheels in frame. The position was chose to have a dark background, with light hitting the car on the side to show up the wheels.
As for the choice of car & wheels, I'd tested lot but was't really happy with any of the aftermarket wheels on different cars, so I thought to myself "what cars have nice wheels as stock and also have nice curves?" The viper immediately came to mind as it has unique wheels as well as nice lines, plus it was available in black, which I though would help make the wheels stand out even more. Racing tyres were added to accentuate the wheel size and suspension was lowered (but not too much).
After a bit of testing I got the car & camera positions just right, then it was down to finding the right settings to take the photo with. From memory I used the mature colour filter, one degree of WB into the red and exposure as dark as possible, as I planned to increase contrast in PS. That got the following shot, which was cropped very tightly and had + 5 of brightness and + 80 of contrast!
