PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 50 Million Total

Like said, the Xbox One had a few months where it sold more than the PS4 in that particular month, but even with those months the system is still millions of sales behind. Both gaming systems are great and I believe both are selling better than the previous generation systems so that is positive news for both Sony and Microsoft. I prefer my PS4 over my Xbone but I personally feel there are reasons to own both and as soon as the Switch is available for pre-order (even though the Wii U was a huge disappointment to me) I'll be putting money down on that too.

It sure is a great time to be a gamer.

The Xbox held the lead in July, August, September & October. I would call that being in dominant position because they simply have lead more of the recent months, especially in the UK where sales increased dramatically when the One S launched. Even with the Pro out the difference in sales was only 100,000 units which is tiny considering it's supposed to be a better machine.

Thanks for the links - though as others have already suggested, a few months lead in one market doesn't really make it 'a killing' for the XB1, especially considering, like I said, those potential purchasers holding off for a few months until the PS4 Pro arrived. I'm sure we'll see a similar situation in the months before Scorpio comes out with regard to XB1 sales.

PS4 Pro sales also have been held in check by a limited supply chain issue.

You have an agenda? The link I give makes the situation quite clear - The same site I link has previously made a headline when the Xbox1 outsold the PS4 for only the second time in two years after they both launched. That's 22 months of PS4 ahead verses TWO months of Xbox1 ahead. Now you're doing the same. Claiming a dominant position. Really?

I am a bit of a fanboy and I do really hope Microsoft do better because Sony without competition become arrogant but I can't think of any reason to own an Xbox console (aside from Forza Horizon) and even that runs on PC. For me Nintendo and Sony make much much much more desirable games.

Having both, I can think of a few:
  • Cheaper online subscription
  • Better free monthly games (usually)
  • More reliable online services
  • A catalog of racing games that actually release (though, as you said, they'll now be available on PC)
  • In the case of the XB1S, the only 4K-capable console with a physical media option
That said, my XB1 is essentially only a racing game console, as none of the other exclusives interest me. I've tried Gears of War and Halo and just don't really care for either of them. Cuphead is the only non-wheeled exclusive I'm interested in, but it was delayed again.

@SlipZtrEm First 2 points are better for Nintendo though, also PSN have gotten a lot better that is rarely has issues.

the 4K option is a great point though

Don't worry, it got me once too.
I know it is a parody account, so many brilliant tweets over the years.

I wonder if PS4 has been outsold in any month since release worldwide? Must have gapped the opposition quite well this year. Impressive stuff and it seems like all regions the gap is increasing year on year, wonder how others will catch up if 'making a killing' is falling further behind.

I'm not really comparing to Nintendo though, I'm comparing the XB1 to PS4. I've always seen the Wii U as a sort of different animal to those two, since it doesn't really try to compete directly.

PSN may have gotten better since the PS3 days, but I play online on my XB1 at least twice as often as I do my PS4, and yet still encounter more issues on the latter.

Considering the competitive nature of the gaming market these days, this is a pretty huge achievement in my view. Microsoft have been going pretty hard, PC gaming has its fair share and the casuals continue to be drawn in by Nintendo.
I can see this console hitting 100 million in sales, especially when 4K TVs reduce in price even further, the console drops in price and the library of games becomes even larger.
Franchises sell consoles, so if titles like Grand Theft Auto, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy etc continue to be developed, the console will go from strength to strength.
Sony also has some good 'retro' franchises that could do really well. Fair bit of hype around Crash Bandicoot, Syphon Filter would sell, Ridge Racer could make a comeback...plenty of content there to sell consoles.

I think a lot of the Xbox sales numbers are helped by the fact that the purchaser also has a PS4. Doesn't hurt to have two consoles.

But with my time at Best Buy currently working the holidays (a lot of douchey customers btw) I noticed something peculiar. The Xbox One S outsells the PS4 and Pro models, but I have seen quite a few Xbox One S get returned (like one or two a shift), but only a handful PS4s over multiple shifts. And even more peculiar, no Pro has been returned in like 3 weeks.

I myself got a PS4 Pro and got a new Toshiba 43" 4K TV, and although it's obviously not a graphical leap, it still looks and runs better than the original PS4. That Pro is perhaps the quietest thing I've ever heard.
