PMC - Week 134 - Poll

The Best Phototravel shot is?

It would work because nobody would argue against selective exclusion.

I don't think you're seeing the whole picture here.
Imagine someone that doesn't have access to a computer or to GT4 during certain days - let's call them work days -, and therefore couldn't even enter certain comps because by the time he was ready to submit all entry spots were filled.
Is that fair? No. Would that push people away from the comps? Certainly. Would the overall quality of the submissions drop because some people would just snap one quickly to submit asap? You can bet on it.

Imagine 2.0 comps, and many people working for hours on their shots (which usually takes days for most, as people have jobs, family, etc, and free time is often scarce), only to see after all that work that they can't even submit it (despite deadline is still running), because seats are taken by mostly unedited (or close) shots.

I can't begin to tell you how stupid and absurd that "system" would be...

it's funny how arguements are going, we're not even competing for money. i say just let the rules be and get on with it.

Cant agree more. :D
Looks like the Nardo is leading by a comfortable margin.

It's questionable if you'd really be doing this if you were making polls consistently.

I don't see the big deal btwn cutting & pasting, 10 slots, or 20, or even 30. It is not THAT time consuming.

...There were a handful of times I didn't make poll in all my PMC entries... did I get bothered? No, I figured I needed to try harder the next week. If people get annoyed when they make a shot and don't make poll, then this whole "it's for fun" motto you've tried before is bogus. So say you start getting in the poll every week, but never win. Is it still a waste of time, is it annoying? I thought it was all for fun?

I still enter comps, regardless of whether I am in the poll or not, I still have fun coming up with a shot and entering! I have seen new ppl come and go after a couple of comps of not making polls, either from lack of interest or annoyance, I am just making suggestions, hoping that more ppl will stay around longer.

What happened to being your own hardest critic? For the nth time, art is subjective. You may think your shots are peerless, others don't. It happens.

I am always my worst critic, like in this comps, I thought I had a decent shot, but I didn't have time to make it perfect, so I didn't really expect to be in the poll week. I never thought any of my shots are 'peerless', regardless how long I work on a shot, I can still find minor flaws, or a background didn't come out as well as I would have liked.

It has come up a lot more than once, and it's very usually by people who believe their shots are so good that nobody else realizes it. Sore losers? I'm not saying excellent shots (in my opinion) have missed polls before, because they definitely have. But it's been up to the theme chooser for a long time, and if they don't think something deserves to be there, then that's how it is. I think it's fair; if it's my theme, I should be able to say which shots fit my personal view of said theme.

Sore Losers? I hope your not aiming that at me, because I don't really care if I win (of course I would like to), just competing is fun enough. I guess in the end it is all up to the Host, and 'Theme Chooser'. I see your point, on choosing who fits 'your theme'; but don't you think the voters could do that just as well? Since they determine the winner anyway; Would you rather have the 'theme chooser' just pick the winner, then you wouldn't even need a poll, since the 'theme chooser' knows what best fits his theme (sarcastic).

So we should allow every person who wanders into a thread and posts an unedited, un-resized entry, that doesn't follow the theme, into the poll, for fear of annoying them? I don't see why it should be up to the comp runner to make everyone happy as opposed to the entrants putting some effort in.

If they are grossly not following the theme, they could be excluded from the poll, but the host should make mention of this, and offer a chance for the entrant to fix the issue, deadline permitting. It is the Host's responsibility to make everyone enjoy his comp, because if they don't the comp will eventually die. Even though we do have some die-hards, who will enter every comp.

Like I said, theme chooser gets to have a say in what shots best match his theme. It's not perfect, but it makes for less tie-breakers, which means the weeks can continue on quickly. Just in H2H, we've had one week go to three tie-breakers. On the third tie, the deciding factor was the theme chooser's personal vote. It gets very time-consuming.

Good point, but Tie-breakers will always be needed when there are two superb shots, and the lesser entries will not get votes, and will not be part of subsequent polls.

I'm genuinely curious, I'll have to keep my eye on it.

Please do, and offer any suggestions, to help (slip)-streamline the process. Also I have noticed that you do some really good work, I would love to see an entry from you in the Scenery Comp, if you have time.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the whole "everyone's a winner" attitude people want is not going to work. Yeah, nobody likes exclusion, but the fact is these are competitions, and you have to draw the line somewhere. There will be losers each week, dedicate the effort complaining about it to next week's entry instead.
(Trying to be a bit more constructive than previously).

I'm not looking for an 'everyones a winner' concept, but more of a 'everyone has a chance to win' concept. You take my suggestions, as complaints, to where they are merely suggestions, supported by an example.

Competitions using a first-come, first-serve rationale would have avoided this furore over exclusion altogether.

Wouldn't work, and would alienate many more people.

it's funny how arguements are going, we're not even competing for money. i say just let the rules be and get on with it.

I'm just offering suggestions and my opinion, the host has every right, to keep it as it is, or make tweaks here and there to make it better, since it is his competition.

Fantastic skills of deduction you got there.

But it seems like you've utterly missed the reasoning behind recurring weekly competitions, altogether. You seem to hold a fatal stake in whether someone meets or misses the opportunity to participate. Likewise, the duration of validity of coupons for fast food deals don't get extended just because you missed the expiry date and didn't get a chance to use them; the next batch would be circulated in less than two weeks.

So if you miss your opportunity--an opportunity that was equal to that of every other member of the community--to participate, then wait for a chance in the next event. You don't need to bend the event's competitive integrity by, effectively, pre-screening users' entries.

With a system like that, it becomes a trade off between entering as soon as possible and getting a great shot.

Well I just wanna say...I just put there my 10 favourites shots, of course they are all good, but there are some I like more, thats just that. I have also been left out the polls many times, saying "why?? my shot is good", but the top 10 picker might have another opinion and not like it like I do.
So...c´mon people, this is a competition...so we must know how to "loose" and "win".

Exactly. I don't really know why all this fuss now.

GrumpEone - You really are fast to draw your gun and distorted what I said when you quoted me in your post. I was being constructive and you came back as if I wanted some harm to anyone.
About that previous thread about the polls that I mentioned, you also (on purpose or not) distorted my intention in remembering about its existance and grossly exaggerated. I was merely saying that a thread had already been made about this very same subject, and after some discussion what came out of it was just that each host would have the polls the way he saw fit. And even that was a non-written 'agreement'.
You made it look like I said something like this: "hey, there was already a thread about this, it's a dead subject. Don't dig it up, what's done is done...". See the diference?

I feel the Nardo, the DB9 and 3 Wheeler will win. I wvoted 3 wheeler because the themme was pretty much open so i picked the most outstanding, the 3 wheeler, i initally wanted to pick Nardo tthe colours are bright everything is lit up, very beautiful, the db9 , a basic angle but the composition was still convincing.

thanks for voting for me man :)👍 i decided to go the 'unique' way with that entry, and mimic the tones from old paintings/photo. about winning the poll, hmm...not sure, i like what you said, but it's so far behind with three days to go. i'm surprised franz' entry's not on top, and how come the db9 only has 1 vote? it's a nice photo.

NTX, I just want you to know, that my comments, were not a slight on your choices, but on the system itself. Eliminating, what was it 11 entries, was not easy I'm sure of that!

What, were the questions I asked you, too aggressive and to my point?? Don't be so dramatic, I am only stating my opinions on the subject. There is no malice here, lighten up.
