So I'm taking it then, if 5 people tied for first, second place would still exist regardless? Hypothetical of course, because when is there ever going to be a 5-way tie for first?!

When there's a tie for First, there will always be a tie-breaker poll to determine the winner and following positions.

But just so I understand it right, if there were 5 entries, two people tied for first, two tied for "second" and the last person would still be "third"?

Almost, the two tied for First will go into a tie-breaker to "fight" for P1 and P2, the ones you mentioned tieing for P2 would be P3 and the last one would be P4.
