Porsche expands 911 lineup with Speedster & GTS models

Wooo! Can't get enough of a good thing!

You'd think with so many variations, this would be right up PD's alley. :)

Knowing what the Carrera GTS is supposed to be on the 911 lineup, am I the only one who sees how unbelievably stupid it is for there to be a convertible version?

There's not enough distinctiveness between them for PD.. Now, if they were to do the same with Cayman/Boxster, Cayenne, Panamera, then, perhaps..

Is the speedster supposed to be a ragtop GT2? If so, that's insane.

Are you kidding? If anything there's probably too much variation between all the models for PD .

Nope, it's essentially the GTS with a shorter windshield, Igor backend, Fuch-like wheels and a... unique, interior.

I was going to make a thread for the Speedster about 3 hours ago but forgot...come on! Although I don't see the point in so many different models my head just spins at the choices....a Turbo S for those everyday blasts, a GT3 for that race car feel, a GT2 RS for the ultimate 911, or just a under-the-radar model? So many choices! It's like an ice cream shop! And I'm the 14 year ol....Wait. I am 14. I hate not being able to drive. :(

I think I'd pick the GT2 RS. I'm not going for the 620hp, or the insane aero work, but wow, that is the best looking Porsche I've seen in years. (sorry Carrera GT and 918 Spyder)

What would you pick?

Then there's also the problem of buying the car, maintaining it and paying the insurance. ;)

I really love 911s, but the speedster didn't catch my eye... the GTS on the other hand is everything I would want to drive. Awesome.

omg...

20 different trims for one model of car. Seriously Porsche, spend some R&D and come up with something else that isn't 911 related. Porsche has taken the too many models crown from the Ford Mustang.

Really?

V6
V8
GT350
GT500

That's only 4. Chevrolet has 5 Corvettes (base, GS, Z06, Z06 Carbon, ZR1)
The Camaro has 2 (RS,SS) the Challenger with 3 (SE, R/T, SRT8)

4 isn't a lot. 20 Porsche 911's however, is. But everyone of them serves a purpose.

Eeeeeew!!!

I find that car strangely beautiful. Something about it. Then again, once you show me a better looking Porsche 911 Speedster for the modern area, then this is the best one so far.

Oh, GT350/GT500 doesn't have a convertible. But this isn't the place to argue about that.

Just read the article on the 2011 500hp GT3RS. The thing is insane. Having driven and older GT3, this thing must be a menacing pleasure to drive.

It is when you're wrong. GT500 does indeed have a convertible. The Mustang also has the upcoming 302 Boss (and Boss Laguna Seca) packages. Plus the endless special editions (which as far as I'm concerned is slightly worse than the 911's situation, since at least most of the models have some performance differences).

Completely forgot to add; I actually don't mind the Speedster. Love the black throwback plate, but don't like these special edition taillights (prefer the additional red of the stock units). Really lovely colour too.

I'm imagining this 500hp run-out rumour is just that; a rumour. The track car it'd be based on doesn't even put out that much power, I don't think we'd get a reliable 20hp more for the road.

I see 20 for the Porsche:

Everyone one of those is a trim model of the 911.

10 for the Mustang:
That's exactly the same as the Mustang in that there are 10 models (trims) being sold of the same car:

At least these are all different in some form other than the exterior unlike the Mustang which just throws on the Parnelli/Shelby/California names for extra cash.

Except for the drive-train which is mostly the same. Hell, they all have the same number of cylinders. :D

C2/C2 Cab/C4/C4 Cab/Targa 4 - 3.6L, 345hp
C2S/C2S Cab/C4S/C4S Cab/Targa 4 S - 3.8L, 385hp
GTS/GTS Cab/Speedster/(Sport Classic)/S Powerkit - 3.8L, 408hp
GT3 - 3.8L, 435hp
GT3 RS - 3.8L, 450hp
Turbo/Turbo Cab - 3.8L Turbo, 500hp
Turbo S/Turbo S Cab - 3.8L Turbo, 530hp
GT2 RS - 3.6L Turbo, 620hp

That's the breakdown of which models share which specific-output engines, as far as I can tell. I don't know my Porsche engines well enough, but I believe the GT3, GT3 RS, and GT2 RS still use a different base block than the others, based off the old GT1 engine. The Turbo and Turbo S switched to the new-gen block with the 997.2 revisions last year.

People poke fun, but I do see a fair amount of difference between them, not to mention they do give a customer just about every conceivable option possible. It's certainly not as bad as the Mustang's badge jobs, or the M3's constant parade of special editions, or even Subaru and their yearly STI's that might have a different strut brace .

The Porsche model range isn't that complicated.

Ignoring the specialist models (GT2/3 & Speedster), it's 3 engine choices (cooking, S, Turbo), 2 body syles (couple, convertible) and 2 drive trains (2WD, 4WD). Then there are the power upgrades (powerkit for the S and the Turbo S)... simples :)

People think it's complicated beacuse you can get any combination of the above and Porsche designate each as a seperate model.

The GTS looks like ait would make my perfect everyday car... widebody + 2WD + powerkit. I'll take mine with the manual box please.

The Speedster is clearly a money maker... for collectors only.

IMO, the 500bhp 4.0l GT3 is unlikely. Porsche's current GT3 race cars only make 475bhp from 4.0l, and the recognised daddy of 911 race cars (the Manthay GT3 R) makes only 480bhp from 4.1l. I very much doubt Porsche will release a road car with a higher specific output than those 2.

Umm.. Aren't there also width differences between 2WD and 4WD models?

Yes... the 4WD models have wider rear bodywork/track... although the GT3RS, GTS and the Sports Classic share the 4WD body despite being RWD only.

I'm loving the shape of that 911 Speedster.

👍

Edit: Have decided to send this to Porsche UK's HeadQuarters in Reading.

'Hello,

Because I am the best person in the world I've fixed all of Porsche's problems.
I've attached the most amazing set of changes to the 911 range that will save you BAZILLIONS of pounds.

You're welcome.

Danny,
Future King of the World.'

Can't disagree too much with that, other than to say that IMO, Cabs should be offered with the lower powered engines only and the GTS should be a coupe only.

Porsche need the Cayenne though... whatever 911 fans think of it, the Cayenne is the car that makes the profit and funds wonderful things like the GT2RS and the forthcoming 918.

Tongue was firmly in cheek. ;)
