That's awesome, it's like the 918 without the hybrid gibberish and a quarter of the price. If it's light as the 918 without the heavy batteries and hybrid thingies, it should tip the scales at merely 1300 kg. This will be a really really seriously serious and very sporty sports vehicle.

I want it.

Yeah, it basically sounds like a 918 minus junk. I honestly can't a see a reason to even consider the 918's existence with this car around. Not that I mind, making a heavy hybrid supercar is a waste of resources.

It's going to be tough for this not to step on the toe's of the 918, but I think Porsche could do with a car in this bracket.

I really think that a car like this will help Porsche's reputation among people like Jeremy Clarkson. Producing a good 458 competitor should give them more prestige as a brand, and maybe shed their image of refusing to make a car that outperforms the 911 unless it costs half a million pounds.

So does this mean no more 911 GT2 in the future?
I doubt it, the GT2 is RR, while this will be MR. Not only that, but the cars have entirely different goals. This '961' is meant to challenge the 458, MP4-12C, and Gallardo mainly, as well as a few others, but at a lesser extent.

The GT2, however, is just kind of..... there. It has no main competition. It kind of competes with other supercars but it has no direct rivals. I expect the GT2 to remain in production. If Porsche decides not to continue with the GT2 it would probably not be because of the 961. If Porsche goes through with it, that is.

Here's the Porsche board meeting that spawned these vehicles:

"Should we make the Cayman our new go-fast platform, or stick with the Carrera?"
"Why not just make a go-fast, go-fast platform?"
"What would we call it?"
"... Numbers."

Then what the Fudge does the 911 competes with???

Just bring back the Front engined Porsche....... 928 please. they have Nothing for the Grand Tourers (599, Aston Martins DB7, Maserati GT)

Porsche is rumored to be building a new supercar that will slot between the 911 and the 918, called the 960. This is a rendering reported by Car and Driver:

I hope Porsche decides to bring back the V10 engine.
The car will be built to compete with McLaren and Ferrari's supercars, and may possibly be built on the VW Group's Audi R8 Replacement/Lamborghini Huracán's platform. While the car is little more than a blurb at the moment, Porsche does have a good record of building concepts. I expect a concept model to be unvieled soon.

Plus there's now chance it will be a V10, it will probably use variants of the Cayenne/Panamera V6/V8 engines.

Hm.. They could indeed do something like 944. They already have a solid base motor in the 2.5l 5cyl and it's turbocharged variants. They should just keep it as back to basics model with manual everything as even the former drivers car, GT3/GT3RS are going for DSG and electronic this and that.

I am very interested in what becomes of this. I certainly love the MP4-12C (if it's still called that). This should be a pretty cool car to contend in this class of sports cars. If this new Porsche is like the one in Post #42, I would be fairly okay with it. I love just the silhouette of this Porsche in Post #42. However, it isn't as beautiful as the Cayman or the Panamera. Yes- I'm one of the ones who actually like the Panamera. Again, that's if the new Porsche looks like the car in Post #42 of this thread. I wouldn't be surprised to see a racing variant of whatever Porsche comes up with here.

That render in #42 looks great. 👍
Not sure I'd say it looks like a MR but still looks great.

I'm inclined to say Porsche is doing something good by going after this market segment. I'm not a big fan of going after the segment of the 918, that's a tricky spot because you are either a McLaren P1 or you aren't, not much room for second best or any other spot. In this market agains the MP4 and the like, you actually have a chance to get sales regardless of being the outright fastest or most hyped car.

I'm going to be watching for this thread in the future. Something tells me I'm going to look back on this post in 3 years and laugh about how we were all excited to see a car we only knew from rumors. 👍

I think with all of the 911/Boxster variants Porsche has it would be tough to justify a new 944 or 928 style coupe since they accomplish nearly everything by themselves. It could probably work either as a large 4 seater GT that goes toe-to-toe with the Ferrari FF, Bentley Continental and others or a high end supercar that sets against the F12 and Aventador.
