I think it's an '87.
It's an '85. 80-86 "bullnose" generation, arguably the last of the "classic" Ford pickups. In 87 they dropped carburetors, started using plastic lights with integrated signals, stopped stamping Ford into the tailgate (they still did but it wasn't as depressed or detailed as before) gave it a facelift with an all new interior and had all computers etc in them. Stuff you'd see in a modern truck just very early. Mine was the last of the dinosaurs as far as technology goes. Some had EFI but this is not very common. More than 95% of them were carbureted.

Mopar buddies.

So I did a few things over the past couple weeks.

Hood struts:

AKA deathrod delete

And finally, after much research and internal debate about the pros and cons of certain types of springs, coilovers, and other various suspension components, I order H&R Super Sport Springs and put them on myself yesterday:

Lots of grease, and lots of sweat later(and also a trip to the car wash), it was done:

Ride quality went down a bit, but it feels much more planted at higher speeds. And honestly, the ride quality now is what I expected to feel when I test drove the car for the first time. At highway speeds it actually feels a little better, as long as the highway is smooth.

Still need to get use to cornering with so little body roll. I mean, the thing wasn't a boat by any means before, but it had a little roll through the corners, now it doesn't feel like it rolls at all.

Next thing: once I sell my old wheels I'm gonna get a decent set of tires, because at higher speeds the 🤬 tires I got with the wheels start to show their quality. A couple places have claimed the tires themselves are too unevenly balanced to totally 0 them out. I don't doubt it, because I made the mistake of going with the budget Toyo Extensa HP instead of springing for something affordable and good like some lower end Hankooks or Goodyears.

YAAASSSSSS IT LOOKS SO GOOD

Bed wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be when we removed several inches of dirt/leaves/pine needles/plywood that have been accumulating since 2007. The plywood a been there since the 80s.

Have to repatch repatch as and do some new ones. But the inside aint bad. The outside is a bit rough but I have panels for at least one side.

You have plans on restoring the truck? Just wondering.

A few people I've talked to didn't even realize it was lowered. I love that the springs lowered it just enough to look like it was built to sit that low.

Last weekend was my first time at VIR. In three words, I Love It. In a few more words, the flow, the elevation changes, the general layout and even the quality of the facility is just beyond spectacular. Like Lime Rock or Road America, it may be in the middle of nowhere, but it's a world class track in every way that counts. It's very fast, very dangerous, with a roller coaster like quality that just doesn't translate very well to racing sims. Having driven the real thing, I can tell you it's absolutely brilliant. From the venues I've been to, it's my favorite track by far, surpassing even Watkins Glen, and I don't say that lightly. Once you get a rhythm going, driving the VIR Full Course is just sublime. It's truly that good.

(Took this one with my phone--the morning mist rising down the front straight)

The two above I took. The ones below I didn't. I haven't bought them, hence the live link and water mark.
