Eh, it's alright I suppose. It's like saying a Walmart Super Center is better because it's bigger - well it's still Walmart, and it still sucks. This is still a Mac, it's just faster. Yay. The Mac OS X is much better than previous Mac OSes, more stable, more options, yadda yadda, but there are still a lot of things for the user side that need vast improvements.

The first thing I would change would be to turn off ALL the animations. It's distracting and annoying.

BTW, Panther is being released on the 24th... nothing huge that'll mean much to your request for more user power, but I'm still buying it, of course. ;) (I'm just debating right now whether to pre-order or to drive to the Apple Store that night).

:drool: You lucky bastard...I envy you sooo much. No no...I don't envy you. I loathe you in envy!

The next computer I get will definetly be a Mac. I mean, if I wanna be an artist, I gotta have the gear!

IDC if it's still a Mac. I'd pimp it. Lol, their interface looks alot Cooler than windows... And that's fun. Prolly faster than my comp right now, but they are expensive as hell right?

Rather build my own PC.

Mmm..... five Powermac G5s..... Drool. :eek: I don't particularly like the case design, but it's supposed to reduce noise and increase air flow. Are you running SETI@Home on those? You could complete many work units with them.

Why didn't you just get 2 of the ones with all the specs like 8GB ram and 2 250GB harddrives? Just curious...

Anyway, :drool: Still nice...Networking would be fun.

Yummy... Not a big Mac fan but the new G5's are AWESOME !.. LM. Could you do me a favor ?.. Rip off one of the covers and take some shots of the inside so we can see if it's as clean inside as the promo pictures promised....

So, Loud, you're 0.3% of the way to the second biggest computer in the world...

This from NewsScan, which I read every day:

'BIG MAC' MAY SNAG NO. 2 SUPERCOMPUTER SPOT
The new "Big Mac" supercomputer housed at Virginia Tech may earn the distinction of being the second most powerful supercomputer on the planet, following Japan's gargantuan Earth Simulator. The Big Mac, which is actually 1,100 dual-processor Power Mac G5s strung together -- boasts a theoretical peak speed of 17.6 teraflops, although its final score on the Linpack Benchmark won't be officially announced until Nov. 17. "They're getting 80% of the theoretical peak," says Jack Dongarra, one of the compilers of the Top 500 Supercomputer Sites. "If it holds, and it's unclear if it will, it has the potential to be the world's second most powerful machine." The current No. 2 machine --the ASCI Q, built by Hewlett-Packard for the Los Alamos National Laboratory -- is based on 8,000Alpha processors and operates at 13.8 teraflops. The Big Mac is one of the few supercomputers in the world to be built entirely from off-the-shelf components and cost only $5.2 million. By comparison, the Earth Simulator, which is composed of more than 5,000 processors operating at 35.6teraflops, cost $350 million. As a system admin I'm waiting for heavy patching before I roll it out to my users.

The next computer I get will definetly be a Mac. I mean, if I wanna be an artist, I gotta have the gear!

Adobe actually recommends a high end Dell.

IDC if it's still a Mac. I'd pimp it. Lol, their interface looks alot Cooler than windows...

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want something to be "pretty", yes a Mac will make you happy. Personally I'm in it for effeciency so I want to take the best use of my screen area. Apple tends to put too much fluff into their visuals for my taste.

Are you running SETI@Home on those? You could complete many work units with them.

I fired up dnetc for a few blocks, nothing too impressive. About what I would expect out of dual 2GHz. I'm waiting for an optimized core - then we'll see the boys haul some keys.

Why didn't you just get 2 of the ones with all the specs like 8GB ram and 2 250GB harddrives? Just curious...

Anyway, Still nice...Networking would be fun.

:odd: It would be rather difficult for five people to share two computers. Additionally, it's about processors at this point, not memory. After we pass the 1GB mark it's time to load up on CPU and disk speed.

And yes, the networking is AMAZING. Some numbers (asuming an Mp3 averages 4MB):
Connection -> Theoretical Max -> time to download a/an Mp3(s)
56Kbit dialup -> 7KB/s -> 586s/Mp3
1Mbit broadband -> 128KB/s -> 32s/Mp3
3.5Mbit enhanced -> 448KB/s -> 9s/Mp3
100Mbit network -> 12800KB/s -> 1s/3Mp3s
1000Mbit network -> 125MB/s -> 1s/32Mp3s

Now those are all actually theoretical numbers. In actual use the faster your speed is the lower percentage of the whole you are actually going to get. I direct connected two of my G5 PowerMacs (which have gigabit (1000Mbit)) and I was only able to move 56MB/s which translates to 14 Mp3s transfered in one second - which is an ENTIRE ALBUM in one second. Part of that has to do with the speed of the hard drives, and part of it has to do with the implimentation of the protocal and part of it has to do with the actual network card and cable. 56MB/s is pretty stellar.

Rip off one of the covers and take some shots of the inside so we can see if it's as clean inside as the promo pictures promised....

I believe Apple provides that picture for you. It looks identical to that because that's what I have (... five of ;) ).

So, Loud, you're 0.3% of the way to the second biggest computer in the world...

As people have pointed out on /., those computers are ooolllldd. There will be additional super clusters added to the list this year along with "Big Mac" (what a loser name). And besides, I have FIVE of these which by my math comes to 0.45%!! (:

:eek: Nice setup Loud, I can get a Apple Computer for a pretty good deal here.

But my next computer is suppose to be a laptop. It takes up less space.:) But, It's not going to be so powerful, unless I pay big Money.

Ah, five. Yes, my calculation was based on your thread title! :)

Dell do some scary workstations. Quad P4 machines with 4GB RAM and RAID5. Nice! Not cheap though.

w00t ?... When you say Quad, do you mean 4 seperate processors, or 2 seperate with HT enabled ?.... I'm fairly sure Dell don't do workstations with 4 cpus..

I know dammit.. I wanted to see if Apple were lying. No computers are THAT clean on the inside :grumpy:

This is correct. I don't know of anyone that puts four processors in one workstation. However, they do make a quad server box, and used to make an eight way that supported 32GB of memory.

PTHTHTHTHTHTH

If you really want power in a small place then talk to Sun. They make a server with 192 processors in the space of a double wide refridgerator. I think they're up to 2Ghz by now.

Yup, I just checked and you're right. They're doing dual-processor machines at the moment.

The discrepancy between my statement and the truth will be attributable to one or more of the following:
  1. They used to do 4-processor machines, but don't any more.
  2. I was slavering, and the quad-processor Dell was a figment of my imagination.

  1. Being a HUGE Dell fanatic, I'm going to have to go with option 2 (: Though a quad workstation would be pimptacular.

We're having a Dual Xeon 2.8HT enabled box with 3 36Gb 15000rpm disks in Raid 5 delivered to work some time next week.. Should make a decent Q3, UT2003 server when we have out @Work Gaming nights :D

  1. Not sure about number 1. Number 2 could be it then... I'm not sure any Intel CPU has been quad capable since the old Pentiums (Except for Xeons of course). (We still have a Quad 166Mhz Pentium as Backup at work :D )

We have a couple of those at work running our website -

Dell servers is the ****.. Just too friggin' bad that they won't join the Opteron bandwagon.. As much as I like Dell, the thingie under my desk has a small sticker that says Powered by AMD which I prefer by far...

Well, I've been slow rolling out the new computers, but here is a pile of the old stuff (:

I'll take em(Just kidding)! Are those 450 mhz G4s? They would make great SETI work unit computers even if they are somewhat slow.
