Predictions for Malaysian Grand Prix?

I dont think its too early to start speculating at the outcome of the Malaysian GP. I've got a severe case of F1 fever right now, and the only cure is talking about F1.

I am sort of new to F1, so I have trouble following along.

But as far as I understand these are the teams that are still using last years car:
Ferrari
BMW
Mercedes

And I think the teams with new cars are:
BAR
Jordan
Renault
Sauber

When will we see the new cars from the other teams?

What is the Malaysian GP usually like? It would be interesting to see a rainy race. I certainly hope the outcome is anywhere near as interesting as the Aussie GP's.

Come one, F1 veterans, tell me what your instincts are telling you based on the Aussie GP.

Is Ralf burning out, or does he always run behind the pack? I always thought of him as a major contendor.

could be interesting this one raffle it between Ferrari, Mclaren, and Williams look for an outside chance from BAR and JAG

Well,
I am sort of new to F1, so I have trouble following along.

But as far as I understand these are the teams that are still using last years car:
Ferrari
BMW
Mercedes

Ferrari is right.
It's Williams (as in Sir Frank Williams)-BMW
and McLaren-Mercedes

Williams and McLaren are running new engines in
"furhter" developed 2002 chassis'.
And I think Minardi is running last years car, I think...hell they are
probably running an '01 chassis.

And I think the teams with new cars are:
BAR
Jordan
Renault
Sauber

Toyota and Jaguar are running completely new cars as well

When will we see the new cars from the other teams?
Ferrari will introduce their car at Imola, or so I think that is the rumor.
McLaren said, "when we get to Europe". I would expect it at Imola or Barcelona.
And actually I think Williams is running the new car, the FW25.

What is the Malaysian GP usually like? It would be interesting to see a rainy race. I certainly hope the outcome is anywhere near as interesting as the Aussie GP's.
I just hope Montoya and TGF are on the front row. We would get
to see how well made the new Williams is, huh? :P

Hope this helped and I hope (and didn't mean to) I didn't sound like a butt or know-it-all. Mainly 'cause I know very little.

It will be interesting to see how Cristiana does against the F1 competition, after he completely dominated CART. I am guessing he will be very good.

Who is TGF?

Who is TGF?

daMatta is not in the best car and I think he will struggle with
not being in a competitive car.

That
German
Fellow
Hint: he drives a red car, real fast!

;)

At this point so early in the season, I'd like to see Christiano Da Matta finish a race at least. Unfortunately like Barry said, Da Matta is in an underpowered car. Maybe in a few years we will see him in a Mclaren or Williams-BMW. He is a really talented driver, its just too bad he does not have the car to use those talents.

Don't feel bad about being new to F1 Civic, I first got into it last year and I'm still grasping some parts of it(I.E. having to get up in the middle of the night to watch a race live over in Europe which isn't really that bad).

Wooot!! McLaren all the way! I'm also a big fan of Ferrari, but Michael Schumacher is just too damn good. lol. He usually wins by a mile (Duno what happened in Melbourne, but Im sure he'll be kicken butt in the 03 ;) ). And yes... instead... McLaren wins!! +1 for the team!

Anyway, my predictions are:
1-Michael Schumacher
2-Coulthard
3-Montoya
4-RAIKKONEN (McLaren pride :) )

Hey. Have any of you guys seen the movie Driven? You know when they show the camera from the driver's veiw during the rain, do you think they really see the rain going all slow and stuff? And do they really just see their very front and the sides are a blur, when the weather is normal?

Here is a general F1 question.

Most often the thing that intriques me about motorsports is the technology employed in the vehicles.

Anyways, what is the deal with F1 engines?

It seems that (most of the time) all teams use an almost identical engine. I say almost because when everyone switched to V10's, Ferrari chose to use a V12 for a while.

So, how much of the engine design is mandated? Like right now everyone is using a 3.0L V10. Is this in the rule book?

Tell me if this is how it works: FIA says "Everyone has to use a 3.0L V10" and then everyone designs a 3.0L V10 and if yours has 50 less horsepower than the other cars thats tough ****. Or if you have 50 more hp than anyone else then good for you.

In other words, everyone has to have the same engine. But the amount of Hp is not specified in the rules?

Why did they change from the 1.5L V6 Turbo's of the 80's?

What else is regulated about the design of the cars. For instance, what if some company decided to start using a 10 speed gearbox. Would it be outlawed because that would be an advantage although a little too complicated.

TELL ME, I am thirsty for info about F1.

Yeah - I think V10's are mandated now. The turbos were abandoned after some of the ridiculous power outputs of the mid 80's - the Brabham BMW's were reputed to put out 1500bhp in qualifying trim.

The original formula for '89 was 3.5 litres, and they went to 3.0 litres in '95 after Senna and Ratzenberger's deaths at Imola in '94.

Gearboxes have a maximum of 7 speeds - Williams were developing a CVT, and argued to the FIA that it only had one gear. The FIA banned it on the basis that it in fact had an infinite number of gears (which is technically correct).

Go to the FIA website: http://www.fia.com/homepage/selection-a.html
and work your way through to the Technical & Sporting Regulations for Formula One. This sets out the dimensions and technical specs of the cars - well worth a read.

In terms of the history of the sport, this is worth a look: http://www.4mula1.ro/history/history.php, and there's always www.forix.com

Good luck!

Holy ****! 2 people died at Imola in 1994!?

Ok, Vat Man, I hate to milk you of all your F1 info. But I cant resist.

If I were to go by GT3. I know generally how much hp some of those cars are pushing.

However, you mentioned that they switched to 3.0L from 3.5L after Senna's death. Are you meaning, they did this because the 3.5L's had too much power?

So, if GT3 is anything to go by, the 3.5L V10 in the F094/S has 790hp. How much hp do F1's nowadays have? Around 725hp like the F090/S?

So, if they're making the cars have less hp. Wouldnt the new ones be a little slower than the old ones. Even though I understand that there are countless other ways to enhance the cars performance, and make it go around the track faster. But it would still be hard to lose a 1,500hp car with a 700hp car down a track with a long straight away, no matter how much time you make up in the twisties.

I thought it was two years ago though.

Last year, Ralf ran into the back of Ruebens.

When the 3.5L formula was re-introduced in the late 80s the engines were developing around 650-700bhp. By 1994 the figure of 790hbp from the F094/S would have been roughly correct.

Despite the reduction to 3.0L the top F1 engines are now producing in the region of 900bhp, and all the works engines bar the Renault would be in this region. The massive rise is down to the rapid pace of development in recent years, funded by massive investment by the car manufacturers. Engines are now spinning at 18,000 revs or more, which is how they're getting the extra power.

F1 cars have been gradually getting slightly quicker over the years, despite the more restrictive rules. But it's difficult to work out where the gains are coming from. Certainly power, but also tire technology and aerodynamics also play a major part.

IMO extra engine power does not make the sport that much more dangerous. Most accidents occur at corners, where the speed is determined by the grip of the car. In order to reduce the risks, lowering cornering speeds would have more effect than reducing engine power.

Further to the discussion about mandating V10 engines, this was done to stop the expense of the manufacturers building 8 and 12 cylinder engines to test them out.

That's the one I was looking for, and now I think, it was two years ago, wasn't it?

No one's going to forget that for a while.

When they replayed it for the race this year Ozzy's song came into me head and I started singing.
"Flyin' high again, again, again"

No, no not the red car again.
I think its the Germans who will win. Cars with German engines, not the car with "the" German driver.

Montoya
David
Kimi

1 Rafe Schumi
2 Mickey Schumi
3 Cooltart
Does anyone else hate the Sepang circuit???
Hardly anybody seems to turn up (30% of the weekends tickets sold so far I believe) and its just so featureless on TV anyway, just like the new Hockenheim designed by the same bloke.

Sorry I didn't see this, and sorry if what I'm about to say has already been said. You're right about Ferrari and McLaren using last year's car, but you're wrong about Williams, or as you say BMW. Williams are the only front running team as of right now that are using their new 2003 car. Ferrari and McLaren will start using their 2003 contenders later in the season. As for the other teams, yes, they are all using their new 2003 cars.

With Ferrari they have already launched their 2003 car, but have not used it yet, dubbed the F2003-GA, the GA being for Gianni Agnelli who was the boss of FIAT, the parent company of Ferrari, who passed away around the time of the launch. As for McLaren, there is absolutely no pictures or solid information about the MP4-18. It is all very hush hush, and only the employees and drivers at McLaren have seen it, of course. A rumor that is circulating however from the German newspaper 'Bild' is that the other teams, Ferrari included, better have something else up their sleeves. It is rumored that Mercedes-Benz has developed a brand new V10 engine that will rev to 19,700rpm, and produce around 930hp. If this is true, me being a Ferrari fan and all, even I will admit that Ferrari will stand no chance, because we all know that McLaren know how to make good chassis'. If the rumor about the engine is in fact true, and it is reliable, then I think we will see a different driver winning the championship, and a new constructors champion crowned, because there is nothing on the grid RIGHT NOW, not even BMW, that can match that power.

As for the Malaysian Grand Prix, I'm sorry to disappoint you in terms of rain, but it rarely ever rains in the race, and it is usually a race of attrition, because of the extreme high temperatures, so usually only the most reliable cars finish the race, but not always. The track itself is very wide and good for passing, but is quite bumpy where they have re-surfaced the track. It can be tricky in the first turn on lap one, as seen by last year with the clash between Schumacher and Montoya. It is usually a good race, with a lot of surprises because of the high attrition rate.

As for Ralf, he is not burning out, however, he is not exactly the most aggressive driver on the grid. He seems to not want to push himself in the races if he is not in a podium place, and just doesn't seem to be willing to pass anyone. He certainly is nowhere near his brother Michael in driving skill or talent, but he seems to not be trying this year so far, but he usually always starts out like this.

I hope I helped.

Well, I didn't expect this at all, but it is supposed to rain cats, dogs, maybe even rats and other small rodents on the Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia  Friday Saturday Sunday

To say the least, it is going to be interesting!

But I suspect it wont be reigning Jaguars on Sunday.

Let's hope the race is run in damp conditions, rather than really wet, and does not favour one make of tire too much.

its all got to do with aerodynamics plus the modern technology is way more advance in getting the power to the road as well. in the mid 90's they slowed the cars down again by putting grovves on the tyres but schuey still breaks lap records so i guess technology advancement is still very fast
