Well i'm gonna be getting my licsnese soon and i wanna know which car to get. I know the rx-7 is better. But it cost more i want to mod whateve car i get (i love rice). I'm only gonna have 15,000 to spend. An rx-7 will cost about that leaving me next to nothin to spend on it. But if i get a Prelude (10,000) i will have around 5g to spend on it. What should i get????

An RX7 will be harder to find, and harder to find stuff for with no cash left over. You will be able to do a lot to the Prelude with 5k.

Someone started a running joke that Honda forgot the "IT" out of "Prelude Type SH"... But, I bet you won't be able to find a RX-7, for cheap, anyway. Go with the Prelude and give it some good engine mods.

Scince i like rice (i know most of u dont) heres my list of what i eventally all want:
1. Cold Air Intake (probably iceman)
2. 18 or 19 white rims
3. Ground effects
4.Short Throw Shifter
5. If possible, probably not, super/turbocharge
6.Street/Racing clutch from clutchmasters
7.Racing seats, sparco
8.Maybe a new ignition

I'd go with an RX-7...just find a 2nd gen TT, you can get them for like 6K, and they last longer than the 3rd gens...they are nice too.

RUF, my bro got a short throw shifter for like $30...

Damn, I was thinking the entire transmission... my bad!

I'd go with the RX-7. There a little more but they are nicer. I don't care much fo the Prelude. All though the Prelude is cheaper, the RX-7 is a better quility. So i guess you get what you pay for.

I would definitely go for the RX-7. It's rear-drive for a start, which will give you a better driving experience every time you get in it. Plus it's a prettier car than the late Preludes, which are, IMO, dogs to look at.

You don't need to do all your mods right now, you can save up, then it's more of an achievement. But if you start with a better base car, you'll end up with the better final.

I'd definitely go with an RX-7. Not only are they cooler, but they'll be faster than a Prelude w/5k invested in it.

Then again, I'm not sure, you'd probably kill yourself in a RX-7 if it's TT'd, and you'd wish you were dead if you drove a Prelude...:nervous:

Anyhoo, if you want fast go with the Mazda, if you want slow and reliable go with the Honda.

:reallyodd

we didn't drive the same Preludes, then!

i wouldn't get a 92-96 'lude, because they're ugly, but the last ones are quite nice, and fun to drive...

get a base model with a stick, not a Type-SH, if you want one.

I wasn't trying to say that Preludes are really slow, just slower than a RX-7 Twin Turbo...:D

viewed that way, it makes sense... :D

but FD RX7s are not that fast... well, ok, they are...

I wouldn't have thought these cars would be natural competitors.

From a purchase point of view I'd have thought an RX-7 from the early 90's would be starting to get a bit pricey to keep on the road now.

Also, if it's your first car, I'd be inclined to suggest the FF car over the FR car.

I would suggest taking the Prelude.

If it's your 1st car, I'd go ahead and suggest the 'lude. I'd get the base model (not the SH) and stick an LSD and Jackson supercharger kit on it. Another thing if you're going for the RX-7: do you know a good mechanic in your area who knows his way around a rotary? If I had one (and some day I do hope to...) I wouldn't want someone poking around it who didn't know EXACTLY what they were doing... something to think about.

Get the RX-7, you can go down here, my dad's an RX-7 specialist...he's been called to other dealerships to fix what they can't, and he does.

I think the RX-7 is a fine car, But your location under your avatar says Mittin of U.S. Don't know which state that is but in KS, and MS it has a nasty tendency to snow during the winter. If it snows where you are and If you want a car that can be driven safely ALL year. Stick with the Prelude.
Bad weather + Inexperience + Powerful RWD car = disaster
You can make plenty of power with the inherent safety of FWD with the Prelude.
Excuse my "fatherly" advice...have six kids of my own 4 are teens.
Just as I want them to be safe, I want nothing to happen to you. :D

The Mittin of the US is Michigan. Anyway RWD cars handle ok in the snow you just cant "Hot Rod em around". My cousin, whose 18 has a Mustang and he handles it just fine in the snow.

Have you thought about insurence on these cars yet? It'll be pricey! I promise you that.

For pure speed and handling the 3rd gen Rx-7 is the winner. As someone already pointed out a Prelude with 5k invested still won't be faster. But logically the Rx-7 probably wouldn't be the best choice for a first car( not the 3rd gen at least)unless you are real mechanically inclined and can work on cars well or know a good rotary mechanic(not the Mazda dealer)and have good control of that right foot.A second gen TurboII Rx-7 would be a better choice as the turbo system is less complicated than the 3rd gen but still has enough power to get you in trouble. You can probably get a good 2nd gen for around the same price as the Prelude and the Turbo II IMHO has more potential than the 'lude. Also from my experiance Rx-7s suck in the snow(others may disagree but I avoid driving in it like the plague) so that may be something to think about.

4.6L , 5.0L, (both V-8's) or a 3.8L (V-6)?
If it is a V-8, my compliments to him for his restraint and superb control of his Right foot.
The V-6 isn't as torquey as the big motors and is quite a bit easier to control in crappy weather.
While in college, a friend of mine had a 5.0 GT. She hated to drive it in the rain, much less the snow. It lit the tires at about 1300 rpm.

Check my profile, you will note that I'm a registered nurse. I work on a rehab unit, and I have taken care of too many people with brain injuries, road rash, etc. due to MVA's (motor vehicle accidents)
I prefer little old folks that are gravity-challenged and have new hips to show for it, to brain injured folks. My :2cents: thanks for listening.

I guess the brain-injured folks aren't going to improve anytime soon, huh?

Reminds me of my response when people laugh at my bike helmet - 'I look a million times better with a helmet than you would with permanent brain damage' (although I tend to add 'did I say would? I meant do' as I ride off).
