A real shock although his ill-health had been somewhat in the news recently.

Emergency services were called to a medical emergency at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota.

He was a divisive figure in music and, even as a fan, I occasionally felt there was something of "The Emperor's New Clothes" about certain projects. Still, there were flashes of real genius in his work.

RIP, too young.

First and only time I saw Prince perform was during the Super Bowl in 2007 and he did so in the rain. I thought it was one of the cooler performances. Rest in peace, Prince.

Damn...

Bloody shame. Loved his music, loved the guy, loved his concerts. :guilty::(

For some reason this day reminds me of the day Jackson died. Attractive woman dies earlier in the day and around midday the death is overshadowed by a music icon.

That man could play the 🤬 out of EVERYTHING.

Damn shame.

Yes and...

What makes a guy like Prince great (and I can't help drawing parallels to Bowie) is not that he can perform, because it's fairly common to find people who can play, and play at an extreme level. What makes him great is that he innovates, and that's also what makes him weird. It's the creativity that's really hard to get.

One of THE musical geniuses of my generation. Wrote and performed some amazing pieces of music and lyrics.

Shocked and saddened.

RIP.

R.I.P Prince.

Great, great loss. So much talent. I was actually discussing his music with a work colleague earlier today (as well as Grace Jones). Truly shocked to discover he's died.

I was going through some stuff just the other day and found his Planet Earth album which was given away with the Daily Mail in 2007, quite a unique move at the time. Eerie that literally 2 days later he's is dead.

It's like all the stars of arguably the last great era in Film, Television, Music etc are starting to leaving us.

One day you are one of the most famous people in the world, and the next week you are gone forever. He's lucky he will never be forgotten.

Grew up listening to Prince since my dad was a massive fan, always loved his Guitar and Piano work and Purple Rain wasn't a bad movie to me. As others said, a performer of the highest class and talent, he will be missed. Also he was hilarious in New Girl. RIP

I have that somewhere, it's actually pretty good. I'll have to start going through boxes...

"I'm so funky I can't even sleep with myself,"

I love Prince, got to see him live here in Melbourne about four years ago. My wife got mad because I spent about 400 bucks for both tickets. I found out late, those were one of the last few seats.

In the lead up to the show she started listening more of his music and by the concert day she had become a fan herself. After the show she couldn't care less about the money, we were completely blown away with his musicianship. John Blackwell Jr. was playing drums that night so that was a nice plus. Prince played the **** out of everything, was also incredibly funny.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say, I just woke up an hour ago and saw this horrible news...

R.I.P. you extremely talented, weird ass genius.

It's not been a good year, 2016. His music will live on forever. He might have been before my time, but I'd take his fantastic music over anything from today.

R.I.P Prince :(

I'm not into Pop music but I did enjoy his funkier stuff (1986's 'Kiss' being the perfect example). That being said he was one heck of a guitarist and he could play just about anything he put his mind too. Sad day for music fans.

One of my personal biggest favourites gone at just 57! What is going on this horrible year of 2016! :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

He was my ex-wife's favorite back in the '80's. I can still hear the song "Controversy" playing in the car at 3-4am as we delivered the early morning newspaper. I never really got into his music until a few years later, at which time I became a pretty big fan. I just watched "Purple Rain" on VH1 a few weeks ago and it remains one of my favorite movies of all time. R.I.P. my friend, you are truly one of the best. This is what it sounds like, "When The Doves Cry".......
