Prince has died aged 57

It's pretty fitting that it's been a raining all day here.

Thankfully, as with all the other artists we have lost over the years, their music will last and in a way keep them alive.

Still though...:(

I'm not a huge Prince fan but he was undoubtedly talented. What's weird is yesterday on a whim I played his Purple Rain album. Only the eleventh time I've played it in the (almost) four years since I bought it.

Another performer who certainly made a mark is gone.[/i]

Purple Rain is a modern classic - I was listening to it on my iPod just the other day, and despite the fact that it is a bit bombastic, a bit cheesy, a bit '80's' and just a wee bit over the top, it's guaranteed a special place in my affections because my Dad used to play it in the car on the way home from our holidays and various trips - I always remember loving Purple Rain coming on, cosy in the back of our Ford Sierra GL with nothing but the dashboard lights to go with it... Raspberry Beret was a revelation when it came out, just the perfect pop song... Manic Monday and the legendary Nothing Compares 2 U are two great tunes that Prince penned and allowed other artists to make them their own, and with outstanding success in both cases. There's too many classic songs to mention really, but When Doves Cry will always remain one of my favourite songs of the era. Prince also wrote 'And God Created Woman'... well, I'm no creationist - or a believer in God for that matter, but whether created or evolved the man was a creative genius...

(The white building is Paisley Park where Prince passed away)

Bad part about the flu is that when you really get it, it can damn near kill you. Poor Prince. Such a talent. I hope his estate shares his music.

As a teen, Purple Rain, both the album and the movie was a really big deal. Purple Rain is one of the few vinyls I re-bought on CD.

R.I.P Prince

I never knew what a great guitarist he was until I saw this video a few months ago while searching for Jeff Lynne videos. (I am also a huge ELO fan)

RIP Prince.

Was never a big Prince fan (heck, I didn't even know he did When Doves Cry local radio played it a few months prior), but I think that for his contributions, Paisley Park will become as big as Graceland in the near future.

I have to admit I never really liked many of his songs, especially Purple Rain but I got in the car today and Purple Rain Live was ending. It was this perfect solo in the exact sort of overall theme of the guitar in the song and it hit me hard. I sure will miss him though, Rock In Peace my good sir.

I’m 49, and Prince’s music was always there through my teens and twenties. With the exception of a few tracks, it was never music I was particularly passionate about at the time, but it got played in discos (yes, they really were called that 30+ years ago) and on the radio a lot, and I liked it well enough.

Then a few years ago (I just checked, and it was >8 years ago!!), Prince did 21 day’s at the O2 in London. I bought tickets and went with my wife.

Four things I remember from the concert…

1. The show he put on was amazing – one of the best live performances I’ve ever been to
2. How good a guitarist he was
3. Just how many massive tracks he released – it was one hit after another for 2 hours +
4. The sheer number of songs I hadn’t heard for many, many years, but which I immediately remembered every word of (and sang along to)

I went home last evening after reading of his death on line, and I felt genuinely sad. Not sure if that’s because we’re relatively close in age (you think about these things as you approach 50!), or because he had a bigger influence over my earlier life than I remember, but it was an odd sensation.

57 is no age to die.

Apparently he died of an opiates overdose.

He made a fortune as a recording artist, selling records, tapes and CDs.

Now his time is done, his business model obsolete. There will definitely never be another like him.

Overdose, AIDS, influenza . . . nothing has been proved yet.

All we know for sure is that Mr. Nelson will not perform again on Earth.

RIP, sweet Prince. :(

...what should we make of Prince’s implicit claim that albums, books and Black people have become devalued? And since he links these claims together, what is the system that has actively participated in the devaluing of good music, good books, and Black lives (whether good or bad, if lives can be so valued)? As music goes, only one album in any genre went platinum in 2014, and it was the “Frozen” soundtrack.

Seriously man! I was never a fan of his, but don't run around spewing the drive by medias stupidity. They are doing the autopsy today. We'll find out this afternoon or tomorrow or next week, who knows.

Nothing has been proven yet so don't run around spewing other's speculations, it only makes you look foolish. Lets wait for the official word, shall we.

EDIT: Just seen your post above and that is all well and good, but that doesn't mean that, that is what killed him. I too take Percocet for my chronic back pain and if that is what killed him, he would have had to have taken a lot at one time....just saying.

So I was talking to my mom about this and apparently Justin Beiber (Bieber?) said something tasteless; something to the effect of Prince not being the last greatest performer still alive.

I don't have enough context to make a comment one way or the other, but, and this may come across contradictory, it seems whatever it was was done for attention.

The Beaver did indeed make a jackass of himself.

"Well not the last greatest living performer."

The question is - is he talking about himself or in general?

Anyways...
Rest in peace, Prince. No one will ever take that throne.

I didn't see the tweet or FB post or whatever he said but he's right. Prince is not the last greatest living performer nor the last greatest performer alive.
